Now this is awesome, nice work. I'd provide an encode but I respect upthorn's "no rapidshare" decision. edit: forgot the vote. 9.8 for technical (you can't know if someday this will be 1 frame faster) Didn't vote for entertainment.

Maybe I should just give up altogether. I spent countless hours on this run, playing everything in frame advance mode trying several times looking for the optimal strategy, but apparently I suck anyway. Since this submission isn't optimal, my only chance is that it's considered at least entertaining, but I already know it won't be the case... Oh well, I tried.

One of the first things you should do before submitting a TAS is to make sure it beats non-assisted times, especially if it's for a well known series like sonic games.
I did, here and on SDA. I didn't know about that other website :(

And you are randomly bashing me, because? Did I do something wrong to you? Tell me, because it seems so. It seems that the only purpose of your life is to see this submission rejected. Now that's constructive criticism! You have 4 posts, dude, you used literally half of them to say that someone is better than me. Well, thanks. All I know is that there aren't speedruns of the competition levels neither here nor on SDA, so I decided to make one, and it doesn' t look half bad. You're welcome to get those people to submit a run and obsolete mine, of course. But apparently nobody ever bothered to make a serious submission here, so for now my one is the only serious effort in that direction. Also, 2:06:91 < 2:21:18. Let's compare things in the same category. If "Ghost" submitted a 5-levels run now, my run would be 14 seconds faster. Therefore better. Furthermore, I wrote this even in the submission itself: "Contains Speed/Entertainment Tradeoffs".

All of my previous TASes have been rejected. This time I tried harder, and I really think this is at least decent. Not perfect? Maybe. Feel free to obsolete it eventually. But I felt that the Competition Levels deserved some love. Encode. edit: fixed the encode

I don't think it's a problem of b-frames or cpu load, the problem is that those movies won't play at all for me. Media Player Classic just plain dies after the logo, so it's probably something with the codecs used. Maybe I'm just being a noob here, but that Lucky Dime Caper video appears to use a codec called "AVC1" and not h264, maybe it's because of that?

I voted a bunch of times when the new system was implemented, but I quickly stopped doing so. As for suggestions about how the voting system should be, what about if we go with mmbossman's rubric? Each submission can be equipped with a 3x3 grid (or 5x5 to add more resolution, though I would avoid that). Then, for counting purposes, there are two feasible ways: either count the individual votes like a normal poll, or calculate the weighted average and display the position on a graph. Here is a quick mockup: 1) the voting options 2) the results in a poll fashion 3) the results in a graphic fashion

What would be if this run hadn't made such excessive use of the flying "feature"? Would this then have been rejected for not completing the game as fast as possible?
I'd personally think that it wouldn't add much to the existing plain Sonic 1 run, to be honest. By the way, I just quickly viewed this run again, and most of the levels aren't that glitched. Let's see: GHZ1-2: looks good GHZ3: almost the same as the Sonic run MZ1-3: uses a shortcut like the Knuckles run SYZ1: glitched SYZ2: mostly glitched SYZ3: somehow glitched LZ1: good example of non-glitched usage of Tails' flying LZ2: same as the Sonic run LZ3: similar to the Knuckles run SLZ1: looks good SLZ2: somehow glitched SLZ3: looks good SBZ1-3: looks good and/or similar to the Sonic/Knuckles runs. Basically except for Spring Yard, most of this movie doesn't look glitched. And honestly I don't mind Spring Yard, too. With the old system, this would still be an easy yes vote for me. edit: yeah I know, it's not "glitched", it's "takes advantage of Tails' flying in an unconventional way". But "glitched" is shorter and goes straight to the point.

Another thought would be to weight peoples ratings based on their average rating. So if someone rated all 10's, then a 10 is an average rating and would be weighted as a 5.
Hot or Not does that, yet there is still a whole shitload of girls with 9+ ratings. Many people just can't avoid to say the magic word "awesome", apparently.

Yes. Tails' flying mechanism is a perfect replica of the one used in Sonic 3. Technically a Tails TAS of Sonic 3 (& Knuckles) could take advantage of these very same techniques.

I, too, have to do a step backwards. Apparently my problem (and I guess marioguy's too) isn't with MKVs per se, but rather with the codecs used inside them. My Media Player Classic is perfectly able to play the MKV for the latest Lemmings TAS, without the need for any additional codecs or weird stuff. I have problems instead with other videos, like the MKV for ShinyDoofy's Lucky Dime Caper. I guess it's a matter of the codecs used, and I'd like to hear more from our experienced encoders to know if this is possible. And I'd like to hear from marioguy if he can play the Lemmings run just like I do. I know this isn't going to change the codecs chosen by the encoders, because if someone can't replay a movie the usual answer is "update your codecs/change your player/you fail at computers", but at least I would be happy to know what the problem is rather than thinking that it's all MKV's fault.

As much as I hate MKVs, I must be fair, and admit that this video plays fine in Media Player Classic without the need of any additional codecs. About the run itself, yeah, it's awesome, but we knew about that. Nice work, Lord Tom :)

What is the problem in making a direct audio/video stream copy from the MKV to an AVI? Because it's a direct stream copy, the end result (ie. video and audio) will be identical to the original, but now it's just inside an AVI instead of an MKV. Unless I'm mistaken, you can do this rather easily with VirtualDubMod, mencoder and other similar software. Stop complaining and do that.
I'm not complaining, I'm just pointing out things. I thought I made that clear. As I said, I can watch those movies anyway by setting up all the emulators and all the roms, so the format of your choice doesn't affect me. That said, I can't be bothered to convert MKVs to AVIs and mirror them just because "I want to help the occasional visitor to watch the movies". If the official policy is to not give a fuck about newcomers, I'll just sit here, eat popcorn, and wait for more people like that marioguy. After all this is not my website.

The day FBA is approved for Arcade TASing (a man can hope!) you can stay sure I will TAS either Gals Panic or Miss World '96 Nude, probably even in a 2P fashion and whatnot. But there is no Gals Panic for the Game Boy (to my knowledge), and also I doubt it would be hot to see girls in 4 shades of gray.

Post subject: Qix (no actual TAS for now, just asking if it's interesting)

Looking for "Qix" on the forum only resulted in this, so I thought to create a new thread. I may decide to work on a TAS of Qix for the Game Boy, is anybody interested? A random search on youtube gives this link if you're not familiar with the game: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7mds4FtZqfM. This guy doesn't play very well, though. If I do a TAS of this I'll always use the trick to complete the levels at 99% with the slow cursor (for levels with one Qix) and always split the Qixes for levels with two Qixes. My main question is, does this game have a real ending? Many games of that era just repeated themselves "ad infinitum" just becoming harder and harder, and I don't know if there is a real ending (wikipedia isn't being of help here). If that's the case, a 999999 points TAS (like Tetris) may be needed. Your thoughts?

Mirrors or no, MKV is superior to AVI regardless of what you think.
I explained my point of view about how things should work more than once in the past. I sound like a rude asshole, yeah, but I hope you can read beyond my words, I'm not complaining for the sake of it, as I said I don't care only about myself, because I can just get all the emulators and all the ROMs and watch movies in that way. I'm lazy, yeah, but I can live with that. My main concerns are for all the occasional visitors, which come here and have to deal with starving torrents to download videos that require you to update your codecs three times per day, all to save a few kilobytes in an era where DSL users are always more and more. My personal opinion is that this is very wrong, file formats should be as simple as possible, and download options should be as simple as possible. Many and many people are going to be disappointed by this, I don't know if TASvideos' policy is to scare newcomers to keep them away, but I really have the feeling this website is getting more and more elitist as time passes. Take this as an advice, not as a complain per se. I will enjoy my stay in this community anyway, but try for once to do what I do, and stop thinking only about yourselves, as there are other people in the world, and not everyone is a computer expert. edit: to clarify further and summarize if one doesn't want to read a wall of text, my main point is that watching movies should be as easy as clicking on a link.

Another problem with MKVs is that they can't be uploaded on archive.org, and since some people don't like Rapidshare, those movies are doomed to have no mirrors. Time for me to download all the emulators and look for good ROM websites, I guess.

I, too, prefer AVIs over MKVs. I don't see why people must be forced to change their players. Are you being paid by VLC to encode videos in a format incompatible with Media Player Classic? I wouldn't be surprised if that was the case. An AVI file with H264 video + mp3 audio maybe isn't the optimal choice but it's reasonably small and everyone can open it. But no, let's use MKVs so you can pretend you're cool and cause compatibility problems to many people.

Ah. I wouldn't say it's entirely your fault, though. Also a thread in the SNES forum was broken, just like NVA's screenshots. Probably the database is having its period.

Improvements or not, my point stands: why didn't NesMovieAgent post in this thread? And, more important, where the hell did the movie page for this movie go?

How come this has been published, and NesVideoAgent didn't post in this thread? o.O Weird, the status is "published", the thread has been moved here, but there is no post by NesVideoAgent and no actual movie page on the main website.
