Good question.
Most of the times I prefer 100% runs because they show more of the game, and if they're well done, you get to see more awesome action.
Anyway, there are some any% runs that are very entertaining as well, namely the ones that show off weird glitches, characters that walk through the walls and stuff like that.
Which is why I'm happy to see there is more than one movie for the most popular games, so I can see both the SM64 0-stars run and the SM64 120-stars run, as well as the S3&K no emeralds run and the S3&K all emeralds run.
Variety ftw.
Very good movie, I liked to watch it.
In other news, I figured out how to make 2-pass x264 encodes, so here's an AVI for you. Maybe I compressed it a bit too much, though.
edit: I made a slightly higher quality version.
edit2: I forgot to say how I voted.
E: 8.7 - T: 9.6
I know that my opinion doesn't matter much but I'm looking forward to this and I hope it can get the special permission.
"Tails in Sonic 1" is not much different in concept than "Knuckles in Sonic 1", and I think it would be good to have the complete trilogy :)
New WIP is up! This covers levels from 1 to 20 (of 36).
I'm happy about how this is coming out, I think I'm managing to find the quickest way to beat all the levels, if you pick the pieces in a certain order, you can bring the cursor quite near to the next piece. Of course this isn't easy to find out (nor always possible), but I think most of my choices are correct.
Now, there won't be another WIP in this thread, I think I'm going to go straight to the end and I'll submit this movie. Or I can cancel this altogether, I'd really like to hear some feedback from more users, maybe a judge.
My main concern are the unskippable cutscenes :\
Not really, in my opinion. Yet, even on wikipedia, the Game Boy is simply referenced as "Game Boy", and the Game Gear is referenced as "Sega Game Gear", apparently there is this implicit bias with Sega Consoles.
Right, and another suggestion is to include the Game Gear into the Master System forum description, since Dega emulates both of them, and I know as a fact that someone is working on a Sonic Triple Trouble TAS.
I think the description for the "Sega Genesis Games" forum should be changed from the current "Sega Genesis / Sega Megadrive games" to mention also the Sega CD and the 32X, as there are at least two games (Sonic CD and Knuckles' Chaotix) for those two systems.
This is a very minor suggestion but I think it would incourage discussion about games for those two systems, even if it's implicit that that one is the relevant forum as they are add-ons for the Genesis.
Just throwing in my two cents, what do you think?
I'm considering to make a TAS of this game, but I don't know if it would be well received because this game is quite obscure and there are a lot of cutscenes.
Here is a WIP of levels 1 to 9 (of 36); note that you won't receive a new piece all the times, most of the higher levels actually don't give you a new piece. So the cutscenes will get shorter eventually.
I used VBA 1.7.2 re-recording v19.3 for this.
Now my question is: should I go on and do all the 36 levels of it, or this would be rejected in the chance I submit it?
Now that's a very good plan, nice work. Apparently all of my posts in this thread have been useless so far, I'm trying to help but you know much more than me about this game.
Oh well, I'm still the official WIP encoder :3
Taking about that, any new WIP coming soon?
Back on topic, the SDA run was rather interesting, and also made me realise that you can't keep the Flying Hat during all the game if you aim for 100% completion.
For example, you'll need either the Bull Hat or the Fire Hat to get the treasure in course 28; you'll need the Bull Hat to get the treasure in course 39. And there's probably more than these, I just gave it a quick look.
I wasn't aware of that, I'm not a big fan of SDA. I'll download it, I guess.
edit:
And this, my friend, is why http downloads are better than torrents:
I can't remember the last time I had 1/10th of that speed with a torrent.
Alright, maybe I have something useful this time: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nSrxE8dzwko
You can get the treasure in that level without getting the key. Also you can manipulate the chest's lid's position by moving the enemy around.
(that's not me btw, I just found this video on Youtube)
edit: also this one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=59RJ-NoH6Vk
The problem is that you can't enter that door, I tried that myself and it doesn't work. Maybe the graphics and the objects are misaligned, so there probably is an accessible door somewhere, just invisible.
I just found out that you can use the coins also against the knight in level 40, just in case you're interested.
Also, I found a bug with the bull hat that can probably be useful in some circumstances, but I don't think you're even going to use the bull hat at all so this is pretty much an useless discovery. Basically, when you do the butt drop, the screen shakes for a few seconds, and when it stops shaking, you revert to the standing position for one frame whatever thing you were doing before (yes, including climbing a ladder, ducking, etc). This means that you can (for example) do a butt drop, jump, wait for the standing frame, jump again, to reach higher places. You can also use the shoulder attack mid-air. Another application is when you have to go down from a ladder that begins at the floor: you can butt drop on the top of it, then go down a few steps while the screen is shaking, then you will be standing in the middle of the ladder, you can use the shoulder attack and Wario will fall to the ground (while keeping the chance to use the ladder if you press up or down).
Sorry if this was already know, I hope I could describe it in a good way. Also I'm not sure that the standing position lasts for one frame or more, as I found this while playing in real time.
Just watched it, easy yes from me, I especially loved the "cutting corner" glitch.
I'm also encoding a tentative AVI.
edit: damn you, you've been faster than me once again :(
Well, I'm going to encode it anyway, it can't hurt :)
edit2: Here it is, I hope this is high quality enough for publication, I compared it to the tasv1 (still by soulrivers), it is slightly bigger, but the audio/video quality looks good, in my opinion.
I was playing Wario Land earlier today and I found a glitch I'm not sure is documented elsewhere.
When there is an animation that is supposed to lock everything (e.g. the opening of the exit door), if you pause and unpause the game, you get a "free frame" in which you are allowed to move. You can approach the exit while the door is still opening in this way, but I don't know if the whole pause+unpause thing would be faster than just waiting.
Yes, I can confirm this. 99999 coins give you 5 bags of money, and the 6th is triggered by fulfilling the above conditions.
I'm glad you're going for a true 100% completion, as you probably know I'm really interested in this run and let me know if there is anything I can do to contribute!
I've never been a fan of the Zelda series, so I didn't really know what to expect when I downloaded this.
Now I'm glad I did so, because holy shit, this is awesome.
Yes forever.
