Elbow is a little weaker and has low range. Do you remember how to do it? Left/Right +BC =)
[/quote]
Oh, I see. Thanks for explaining. And no, I forgot how to do it after all these years lol. It's been way to long and too many games ago. That's why I lurk the TAS site so I can see my childhood games again, see them beaten in ways never imagined. I don't have the time or commitment to TAS a game myself so watching is the next best thing :D
Correct me if I am wrong but would using the elbow save more time? I don't know the damage output of the elbow vs a bat difference would be or frames lost or saved for elbow attack vs using the bat.
Reason why I am asking is elbow, elbow, elbow is how I beat this game on my Genesis growing up.
Again, sorry if I am wrong in asking, I am just curious.
Read what I said. I don't doubt the technicality of run but I just dont see it real time. If I watched the vid frame by frame then sure, I would notice it then. But me, like a lot of others wait for encodes and for me personally it just looks like a very well done speedrun. I don't notice anything really that stands out and speaks to me as a noticeable TAS.
You can point out a million things to me to make me notice them and try to reverse my opinion but in the end its my opinion and my thoughts and thats simply how I feel about it.
When I seen the game choice I just rolled my eyes. So I dove in and read the submission text then I became interested. After fully understanding what you were achieving while playing impressed me. I could tell just from my own experiences playing this game as a kid something magical was happening but knowing what you were doing to create that magic nullified the repetitiveness this run could be subject too.
Yes vote.
Awesome play and nice feats on doing what you could to make the repetitiveness worth enduring by taking the extra mile to add the cliff hangers you did.
No vote cause even for the game being a little over a minute long I lost interest about 30 seconds into it.
Manip on the ship attachment looks fine but after that I really don't see anything that makes me stand and take notice. I respect your effort and time but I simply think it may have been wasted here.
Maybe next time choose a game with more substance to it and have viewers take notice of the passion of pushing a game to its limits vs. something rather lackluster in presentation.
I voted meh. Reason being that yes, the TAS is sound technically it just falls flat for entertainment for me. It comes off as something done just to be done. From a spectator point of view I just don't see game play mechanics that make me notice this is a TAS over a normal speed run (ie: glitchy, manip or daring feats).
I mean, its just frogger and you move from one end to the other rinse, recycle and repeat.
In summary the play was spot on but the entertainment just left me wanting to see something I haven't even tho I am sure nothing with a "wow" factor could be achieved in a game such as this hence my "meh" vote. It is vault worthy since the run is sound and did achieve its goals I think.
Also, thanks for the encode. Much appricated.
Yeah but time to invest in that is hard. I have a full time job being paid by salary so I work in excess of 40-50 hours a week if needed. But I do think I know of one thing in a older TAS that was not done and I will rewatch the vid to see if the trick was used. Most vids tho are pretty well flawless with the exception of frame wars or squeezing out some extra frames here and there cause of new routes or newly discovered tricks.
The only game I have serious in depth knowledge of is Halo: Combat Evolved since I modded it for like 5 years or so but since there is no real Xbox emulator then that info would be kinda useless here. Ive seen the speed run of it on SDA and its pretty solid.
Yeah, Im just seeing that happen now and man that looks horribad. Its like they are taking away any chance of people giving their profile personality. It almost looks like Facebook in a sense giving you a single space to put a custom graphic and forcing you to conform to the typical "modern" page sample that web 2.0 has become.
Im going to rework the design now and just do a banner instead. Im used to making those since I have made custom banners for forums and such in the past. It shouldn't be any different then that. I will add some different characters to it as well just to see how it all flows then ill make a reply here with the new design with the banner and get feedback from that and go forward from there. I see what you mean with the "V" and I can correct that as well. And yeah, I wanted the background to have some depth to it but not to take away the focal of the characters or it would look way to busy and hard on the eye. The idea is to grab the viewers attention, no give them a seizure.
Again, thanks for the kind comments and maybe ill try to participate more in giving feedback on videos that get submitted since I always try to watch new runs each night before settling in. All I can really do is give insight from a entertainment point of view and how the movie impacted my viewing experience.
Again, thanks for the critique, feedback and suggestions.
Yeah, I do these layouts for people on DeviantART for free when I have time and do take requests. If they change their layout yet again I still have the PSD for it so editing it to fit the new design wouldn't be a issue.
The main thing was to make something for the TAS community. I don't have the time to try to TAS a game myself since it involves alot of commitment and effort in researching a game and so forth so I did something I know I could do in a day and still keep the spirit of the community in a sense.
Guess I will have to wait for a official answer from someone from staff if they do in fact want to use it and can always make alterations for anytime YouTube changes it's layout and what not.
Thanks for the positive feedback on it. Glad the effort was worth the time invested in it.
I didn't know where to put this really so I figured I would post it here. Hope this is ok.
First off let me begin by thanking all the players for making the videos they have since I have been lurking here since around 2007. I made this account awhile back but I really don't get into forums to much so it sat idle for awhile. I also want to thank the encoders as well cause I feel they do not get enough praise/credit for taking the time to bring us the videos to those who do not have the roms/emulators to view these runs in real time as submitted.
I was watching some videos the other day and happened to check the TAS YouTube channel ( http://www.youtube.com/user/TASVideosChannel ) and noticed it did not have a background so today I spent some time creating one for it. I did it as a way to give back in a sense for all the enjoyment you guys have given me through the years with your hard work and efforts.
If you decide to use it then it is all yours. I hold no copyrights or any praise/remarks needed on the channel on who did it or where it came from. Just keep up the good work and I look forward to the new videos in the future.
You can find the background at this link: http://pepness.deviantart.com/art/TAS-YouTube-Background-353801797
Direct download here: http://www.deviantart.com/download/353801797/tas_youtube_background_by_pepness-d5un77p.jpg
Again, thanks for all your hard work and thanks again to the encoders who supply the videos I watch.
Side Note:
Swordless Link, I found one of your videos in 2007 and haven't stopped watching TAS's since. You're always going to be one of my favorite runners cause you began my addiction.
~Back to lurking :D
Maybe im stating my point of view to vague. Say someone does a run using more of a comical style using internet meme's like longcats, mudkipz and pedobears. That run would have a bigger chance of going viral then what has been done so far. Using emulators you have all the time in the world to make sure your images are outstanding. Hell, with my WACOM I could do this kinda easy as tracing. The point im making is where do you draw the line on what is more entraining without loss of attention span? The reason I bring up the meme idea is that during my vent convo with a few gaming clan mates we could only imagine how awesome it would be to see 50 pictures of noticeable meme's flying by on a game being broke by tools from the internet being mocked by meme's from the internet.
Another note that was brought up tonight when passing along this thread was that "less is sometimes more" and I think this is one of those situations. As Personman said, "the 'ding ding ding' pace of the original as it pumped out answers that were also drawings just at the edge of too fast to recognize them added a lot to the excitement and novelty of the run" and that is simply lost in this new run just for the sake of almost doubling the run time and to make pictures more detailed.
I guess another thing for me and prolly one of the reasons I even bothered making a account to post my thoughts after all these years is that this is about a run that has received a star for new visitors of the site being suggested to view. If you look at the runs in that category they either have outstanding achievements in speed such as Mario64, use of tons of glitches like Super Metriod/LTTP, or groundbreaking effects at the time like 2 Mega Man's at once. The short version of the Brain Age should be there cause it is the first time I have seen someone use a unique idea of drawing franchise characters for answers. When you start discussing obsoleting it just for the sake of better artwork and two and half mins of more time just to add more pics to it seems more like a addition rather then a improvement. In all honesty there was nothing wrong with the run to begin with and I can understand Ryuto wanting to improve his pictures more and do more pics to add to the overall powerfulness of the run, in the end it just falls a little flat to me on a obsolete level.
When its all said and done you and people who can actually have voting power and staff on this site make the ultimate call on it to which I will agree with either way. But its almost to the point of having that star run being..
1. "Ding, Ding, Ding, What?! Mario?! How! Omg.. What! HOOKSHOT!"
2. "Ok, he's drawing... ahh, Its Starfox. Ok next is... Oh, its Link. KK, go to the next please...."
For me, and for others this run isn't about art skill or about how good the pictures are. It's about the impact of what was done during the play time. The end time justifying what was done during the run time. I guess if the first run never existed none of this would even mater hence the catch22.
None taken, but not everyone understands what a TAS is hence the descriptions on every vid. I chose her point of view cause she would represent the casual viewer thinking TAS = Speed using tools. This is almost to the point of just being a playaround I would imagine and not so much of a 'speed run'. Its like building patterns in Tetris I suppose.
Well I decided to come back after talking to my GF about this since we both watch TAS videos time to time together and her opinion on viewing both of these for the first time was that the "short video" would be the preferred video to keep since it holds more valid on what a TAS is so to speak. Its quick and gets the job done in a minimal time. As she said, "It just seemed like in the second version he just added more detail to the pictures or drew the bodies on them." And yes, I showed her the "long" movie first then the "short" one after so she came blind into the situation.
Another thing that sparked in my mind is how I made the comment about a run obsoleting another run because someone added something different but the run essentially works the same way like the "color a dinosaur" run it makes me wonder what would happen if someone redid the "Family Feud" run with more whitty answers like the "TAS LOSERS CYA DOPES". If the answers were more funny would that make the original run not valid cause someone had a better sense of humor?
I must admit having more time to think about it that prolly the best deed of action would to simply edit the text under the entry for the origional entry to say something along the lines of
Brain Age is a puzzle game designed on the premise of exercising your brain. In this run, for example, the idea is to solve a series of simple mathematical puzzles.
And yet, the answers given... are not exactly what you'd expect. You can also go *here* to see a longer version of this run where the author improved upon the quality of the picture sacrificing time for art and entertainment.
Those are simply my opinions on the situation with the topic. In the end the final call really is up the the author since he in a sense is contesting himself and the staff here to warrant a longer run with better art to obsolete his current run. Im going to wait to see what the author of the run has to say from this point further since I would like to know his thoughts on the topic and his wishes after reading everything stated so far.
In the end both runs are good but just like the judicial system, if you let a run that obsoletes another run over another run on the basis of art or more witty answers then I myself might take a stab at the Family Feud run cause some of my friends thought of some funny answers other then the ones that were given.
Just something to think about in the long run of things.
If your going to make a first post, make it worth mentioning...
I was a huge fan of the first vid and spread it around to many friends to see as well. We all found it cute and amusing to not only the game being abused to accept your pictures as correct answers, but also how nice the pictures were drawn complimenting characters and items of gaming.
When I seen this new run I was kinda torn in a sense and a few others I showed it to felt the same. While the pictures do indeed look a lot better and more detailed, by 3 minutes into the video it was more of wondering what you were going to draw next vs. what you were actually accomplishing. It was like toward the end the original meaning of the video was lost to me seeing a video of someone drawing pictures in a game rather then the actual message of the game accepting your pictures as correct answers.
When thinking about it more and discussing it with some friends in Vent the argument came up that anyone with artistic skill could accomplish this even further since all you would have to do in essence is make sure the number needed is represented in the picture as described. You almost get the feeling that another one of these will come along using other things from meme's, portraits or any other art style.
This run should obsolete the old run since it does improve on the quality of the pictures being drawn but don't let it get to the point to where anyone can submit a entry for this game just out of the fact they drew other things and so forth. It would be like have manyl entry's for coloring a dinosaur because person A used different colors vs person B.
I hope my post makes sense and sorry about the rant.
