Well, the published 120 star run is not exactly the image of optimization, it would probably obsolete it, wouldn't it?
That isn't a very good reason to make a *completely* arbitrary movie that would be obsoleted by a real run. This run is more of a playaround. A 120 Stars run wouldn't fit that category. The point is, as Baxter said, to be different from what there already is/will be to offer.

Better question is why it's not called the any% run.
[11:08:56 AM] Jeremiah !! ソニックパッカー: it actually doesnt even make sense to write "0 stars" or "0 stars" for that category [11:09:00 AM] Jeremiah !! ソニックパッカー: its just an any% [11:13:19 AM] Nahoc (ナホック): yes, but me and adelikat dicussed it [11:13:21 AM] Nahoc (ナホック): and it's mainly to attract viewers [11:13:23 AM] Nahoc (ナホック): ;D

I have sort of thought about this before but never brought it up. Why is this not called the "0 Stars" run?

As for the strict categorization, I don't know that you can come up with a clean, concise category for this run. Who cares? It's awesome anyway.
Then why bother post for submission on TASvideos? A youtube encode would suffice w/ possibly a link to it in the SM64 thread
Because the site hosts entertaining tool-assisted speed runs, and judging by the feedback in this thread, it is an entertaining tool-assisted speed run.

I agree with this. Why can't "BLJless" and "avoids major skips" just suffice? We don't need a 12 page argument making it more specific than that.
Because this is TASVideos and it's a Mario 64 run which has about as many insane fanboys as Zelda 64 runs? Der!
Any insane SM64 fanboy would know that 70 Stars is already a category (and has been for quite a long time) in the community.

Hm, actually this run uses something like high speed wallkicks in TTM, so now that I think of it, it should either be obsoleted by a 1 star HSWK run or rejected due to arbitrary goal selection. ;p I kid. Arbitrary goals are fine with me if they produce interesting runs.
The wall kicks in TTM are actually gwk (glitch wall kicks), not hswk. However, hswk are noticeably used in the BBH star "Big Boo's Balcony," and elsewhere. We already knew this was a flaw in defining 70 Stars BLJless. This is why we pointed out that one of our goals was "no major skips."

Heh, you'd be surprised what it can destroy. Trust me.
I only ask to be proven wrong then! :)

this is a really well done run, but I don't think a 70 star run shows anything that a 120 star run doesn't already show.
There's one huge difference, though: The 120-star run is an hour longer. That's quite a lot to sit through. 40 minutes is still within barely bearable limits.
If you think time is the only huge difference, you're sadly mistaken. Also, sub 1:30 on a 120 Star is MUCH more than feasible.

@sonicpacker: what about “Metal-Head Mario can Move” for example? I think it’s an old record, so I’m guessing the 70 stars run wouldn’t have gotten past it at the time it was made… then why was it not used?
Using the triple jump off the "!" box strat is relatively new for Metal-Head Mario Can Move. As you can see, Nahoc's WR for that star BLJless was uploaded in December. The 70 Star was far past HMC at that time.

also I find rather pointless the branch “BLJless” as a 70 stars run would obviously be BLJless, you don’t need to spell it out
Keep in mind that not every viewer on YouTube or even this site alone is as avid an SM64 viewer as you are.

First, it just collects 70 stars instead of 120, so the run feels incomplete.
That's because the minimum amount to beat the game without a major break (BLJing) is 70 stars. It's not some random number.

But most importantly, I don't see the pertinence of a BLJless category, especially when I compare it to the currently-published 120 stars run which barely uses BLJ inside levels. They're way too similar.
Rikku's currently published 120 star run is a horrible comparison to what an optimized 120 star run of today would look like. I wouldn't use that as an example to support your "no" vote.

70 Stars BLJless run in 42:58:52 Should be submitted here soon.
liked bully the bullies, metal head mario can move, and five itty bitty secrets. does this movie have no long jumps whatsoever? EDIT: I take that back. I saw a long jump somewhere. Overall, great movie
Didn't you mean to post this in the run's discussion thread?
It hadn't been submitted yet.

Hell yeah. Nahoc said in the IRC that you guys were just waiting on the encode to submit it. What's the delay? Writing the submission text?
Nahoc is at work and he's the one submitting, lol.

So if you die in the middle of a BLJ, you keep your momentum when you regain control? Interesting...
I think it's because of how Skelux edited the way you die out of that level. Notice Mario doesn't "fly out" in reverse. He instead just falls straight down.
wouldn’t you get the same when you die outside of the castle in SM64 then?
Well I looked into it and any kind of death in that level causes Mario to get backwards speed after he dies. I don't know exactly what's causing it, but I'm pretty sure now that it has to do with how Mario exits after dying.

Yes, and sadly Iron Gate as well. :/
