I'm starting my first TAS, Crusader of Centy. I've already done a regular, multi-segment speedrun of this so I already have most of my route planned out. However, there is a possibility that while playing it back, I'll discover some new tricks and will have to redo a certain part while keeping later inputs. This, I hear, is where the new "input splice" feature of Gens Movie 10a comes in. The problem is that I don't know how it works, and I can't seem to figure it out. There's no documentation for it. Could somebody explain to me very carefully how input splicing is performed so I don't screw up later?
First, play the movie to a good transition point, go to tools->input splice, and enter the number on the frame counter. This will save all the input past the number you entered. Then, redo the movie up to the exact point in gameplay that you entered, and go to tools->input splice again. This will copy the saved input back to the end of the recorded file, and enter playback mode so that you can screen for desyncs. Most games will probably require a bit of hex editing to get to resync all the way properly after an input splice.

I'm not sure what it does in Dega, but in Gens the "improved psg" option changes the PSG from square waves to sine waves, which is inaccurate emulation. I suspect that what Dega does is different, but still a form of inaccurate emulation (and therefore disabled during AVI dumps)

Err, it looks like it actually takes longer to beat the boss that way... I guess I could play around with seeing if it can be made faster, though.

I agree, I just think it should use simpler games so the TASes can still look impressive compared to normal play.

I saw this earlier and meant to post that 3D games seem like a pretty bad idea for this sort of thing, at least before the final rounds and that probably an NES game would be best to start with... but I guess I got distracted and forgot.

SMW (1 Star) SMW small only SMW any% What? 96 exit is the only one I liked. Now I hate this category. :( Sonic (2 Stars) Sonic 3 & Knuckles Sonic Advance 2 Sonic The Hedgehog Sonic The Hedgehog 2 As one of the authors of the currently published Sonic 3 & Knuckles run, I do not believe it warrants a star. I believe Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is currently a better showcase of TASing. And Sonic Advance 2 is better than Sonic 1 for that purpose, as well. Super Metroid (1 Star) Super Metroid 100% Metroid (1 Star) Metroid Zero Mission 100% Metroid any% Metroid Fusion 100% The Metroid Fusion 100% is the most different from the Super Metroid runs, and were it not for that consideration, I would probably prefer the fusion run to it. But even then it would be close. Megaman (1 Star) Mega Man 1 Mega Man 2 Mega Man 2 has more glitch variety and more level variety. I don't understand why there's any debate on this at all... Rockman and Forte (1 Star) Rockman and Forte any% Rockman and Forte “100 CDs” 100 CDs. It shows off more of the game while still being incredibly surprising and optimized. Zelda (1 Star) The Legend of Zelda Links Awakening DX If we have to have a Zelda star, give it to Awakening DX. That or the glitched LttP run. Castlevania (2 Stars) Castlevania Castlevania: HoD Castlevania: CotM Circle of the Moon. Harmony of Dissonance is headache inducing from the clashing colors and bad sounds. Wire TAS (1 Star) Ninja Five-0 Umihara Kawase Spiderman 3 Bionic Commando Hmm. Maybe I should actually watch Ninja Five-o before coming back and demanding Umihara Kawase be insta-starred. Special concept (3 Stars) MMX+MMX2 Gradius Kings Bounty Monopoly River City Ransom Lost Vikings I'm going to vote against gradius in favor of Lost Vikings and King's Bounty. NES games (5 Stars) Super Mario Bros 3 any% Excitebike Battle of Olympus Ninja Gaiden 2 Darkwing Duck Mega Man 5 Gimmick! Super Mario Bros 2 Journey to Silius Arkanoid “Warpless” Legend of Zelda 2 Battletoads “2 player warpless” Gimmick! and Journey to Silius both show off pretty cool TAS moves. SNES/Gens games (2 Stars) Biker Mice from Mars Sparkster Donkey Kong Country Golden Axe Rocket Knight Adventures Comix Zone The Mask See, I think the SMW category should be removed and one more star added here, so I could vote for SNES Sparkster/GENS Rocket Knight Adventures (whichever has more support) and have one to spare for Golden Axe. N64 (1 Star) Majora’s Mask Goldeneye Majora's Mask.

I'll post a tentative list of the groups and how many stars there might be reserved for the groups. Nothing is final or anything. I will be happy to hear suggestions for: - Adding/removing/changing groups - Adding/removing TASes to existing groups - Changing the number of stars reserved for groups - Anything you feel is important/overlooked Opinions about movies in the group and which one should get a star is obviously also appreciated. With the current, tentative, amount of stars assigned to the groups, there are a total of 23 stars, which is one more than the current amount (although currently Super Metroid doesn't have a star). Adding one or two might be possible. Instant stars (4 Stars) SMB3 any% Excitebike Super Mario 64 "0 star" Gradius
I disagree with Excitebike being auto-starred. I think that there are much better star candidates available these days. I would suggest Gunstar Heroes, and Super Metroid 100% as possible replacements. Additionally, it seeems perhaps unfair that two games from the same series get autostarred here. I'd remove both mario games from the instant star list, and put them together into a 3-star "mario" category which includes smb1, smb2, smb3, air, mario adventure, smw, sdw, and mario 64.
Baxter wrote:
Super Mario World (1 Star) Super Mario World "small only" Super Mario World any% Super Mario World 96exit Super Demo World 120exit
This may be controversial, I'm not sure any super mario world movies are starworthy. I'd rather have a star for the warpless SMB3. I think all the mario movies should be lumped into a 3-star category for consideration.

I'd have to choose Sonic 2 and Sonic Advance 2, from this list.

I vote for SM100% and MZM100%.

Mega Man 2 is more entertaining than MM1, because it has a wider variety of glitches, and more levels.

If we have to have a zelda star, give it to LADX.

Of these, I've seen only CotM and HoD. I liked CotM and disliked HoD.

Umihara, no question.

King's Bounty and Lost Vikings. the MMX dualrun would be my third vote if there were 3 stars to give.

Shouldn't Mega Man 5 be in the Mega Man category? I'd also put SMB2 in the super mario bros series category (but I'd vote for it there). Of the remainder, I vote for Gimmick and Silius.
Baxter wrote:
SNES games (2 Stars) Super Mario World 2: Yoshi’s Island Rockman and Forte "100 CDs" Sparkster Donkey Kong Country 1 any% Biker Mice from Mars The Mask
Sparkster and BMFM.

well, I suggested Gunstar heroes going in the instant star, so obviously I favor that. But... aren't there some games missing from this list? I thought you said on IRC that Rocket Knight Adventures was under consideration?

I think the 0 star SM64 is the only star-worthy movie on N64. There should be a general GBA category here instead.

Yes, it was very inconsiderate of Electronic Arts to use the same name for Mirror's Edge's theme song as Portal's end theme.

I strongly prefer this run to the any%, but I believe mmbossman is correct that it doesn't offer a significantly different experience from the published one, so an obsoletion would be due if it is accepted.

Isn't the complete lack of speedbooster visible in all the published runs up until the point that they acquire speedbooster...?

I keep seeing the arguement that this run is different enough from the published low% to warrant a second category, and that may be so... I personally haven't watched this run in order to find out. This arguement is incomplete though, because there are three other published runs that it also needs to differentiate itself significantly from. And, last I checked, none of those movies used the x-ray climb glitch, either. So my question to the people arguing that this run was rejected unfairly is this: Is there any aspect of the game that this shows off that is not covered in any of the four published movies?

yeah, µTorrent is the way to go, set encryption to forced, and have it use a random port each time. I was also getting the 99% problem a while back, and it went away when I switched to µTorrent from azureus.

This is pretty great. I just watched this one and Nitsuja's comparatively. This is more entertaining in the bird riding level, about the same in the space level, and a little bit less in most other places where there's waiting. However, the level of optimization is significantly visibly improved over nitsuja's run. Rating 8/10

This run desyncs consistently for me in the space level, unless I check "allow left+right/up+down" in the sync settings box in the playback dialogue, so you might want to add that in the "sync settings" list in the submission text. I'll view it more fully (not fast-forwarded to scan for desync) after thanksgiving dinner.

It seems like you should put the donation links back up, but have it go to a different account which you can transfer to the new host/owner when he/she takes over.

I have a couple suggestions to optimize this thread for lower bandwidth users: 1) for dialogue, instead of taking a screenshot of each text box, type up the dialogue (or copy it from gamefaqs if possible), and make a 32x32 icon of each character to put to the left of each line to show who's talking. (see Feinne's LP of soul nomad for an example) 2) consider downsizing screenshots to 320x240 unless there are important details that would be lost

I'm pretty sure the Knuckles run would be faster if it were updated. Then again, that's an opinion I formed before I knew about the whole thing where Tails can spindash at the top of the level and then fly over it while maintaining that speed.

I watched this last night but hadn't gotten it together to post yet. It's reasonably entertaining, and improved technically from the last one I watched, but there's still a couple of places where it looks like there's improvement yet to be eke'd out. GHZ1, LZ3, and SLZ3, to name a few. Rated 7/8. If this is published, I'd recommend against obsoleting the Knuckles version.
