i wanted to apologize for my post a few days ago (on this thread) saying that i am really annoyed by "emunoobs" at my school. it is true that it is a very small annoyance for me, but i overreacted (i was really just looking for ways to procrastinate doing work i needed to do during lunch). the teacher i described is actually my favorite teacher, and as president of the schools technology club, i have taught people about TASing (2 years ago i did it as one of our tech club sessions, and im gonna do more this year). so sorry for complaining about them. i do hope though that the kids i am complaining about dont ruin it for me. they always are quite loud and obvious about it (they put a folder titled "roms" on the root of the schools main server...), and i just TAS. it would really be annoying if i got told no emulators because of them, although whatever. i do find it very funny though, every time i TAS at school, i get about 5-6 comments about how my computers lagging, lol.

Leave them be, I'd say. If they want to play the game like that and aren't into TASing, that's their thing. In addition, it's true that some emulators are better suited for actual playing than ours (I, for example, prefer ZSNES over Snes9x), so it's not worth starting an argument over which emulator gets the "idiot"-stamp.

Emulators are made for playing games, not just making tool-assisted speedruns. Just because you use an emulator does not mean you should be making tool-assisted speedruns on it. If you want to let all these "emunoobs" including your teacher know what "real emulation" is like, then show them about TASing etc.

Sorry to disappoint you, but just because you partake in some specialized community's activities it does not give you a right to be so condescending. I hope I don't also need to remind you that TASing is only one of many possible ways of using an emulator. In fact, the process of TASing has little to do with "being pro at emulation". Who is a "pro", anyway? Instead of turning up your nose at "noobs" try giving them examples of what else they can do using emulators. Also, please abstain from using the word "noob" in a derogatory sense. It's exceedingly stupid, and I would like that lingo to stay away from this forum. Thanks for understanding.

I actually know someone in my school who's really in into emulators. He mentioned something about emulating stuff on his dreamcast.

zeromus, Ilari, paul_t, adelikat, nitsuja, gocha, mz, upthorn .... a few more I'm forgetting. They are pros at emulators, because they code them.

If PC TASing was ever invented, there'd probably be less fuss. Unless someone makes a 'no TASing an emulator inside an emulator' rule, unless one already exists. I recall mention of TASing SMS games using a GBA based emulator before Dega was able to be used for TASing related purposes.

There was such a rule or some variation thereof, which eventually lead to xebra getting banned.

Well if I recall correctly, it wasn't the rule itself so much as Xebra pitching a fit that Bisqwit could submit a PC run--which I remember wasn't even accepted--because I guess Xebra considers emulating a PC on a PC to be the same as emulating an SMS on a GBA on a PC, even though it's not really the same number of levels of emulation, so that made Bisqwit some kind of double-standard hypocrite in Xebra's eyes or something like that?

Is that the one who saw a post praising a run, worried that it would be seen as a sockpuppet and discredited, and went all "NO, IT CAN'T BE TRUE, I AM DECEIVED BY MY ENEMIES, OF WHICH I HAVE MORE THAN A FEW"

I can only imagine the snob moue on thundrio's face whenever he sees someone using an emulator in a FORBIDDEN way ... such as to have a little fun. FUN FACT: "snob moue" is an anagram for "emunoobs"!!

Technically speaking, "pro" means someone who makes a living out of it. For example a pro gamer is someone who actually earns real money out of playing games. Of course the vernacular meaning of "pro" is someone who is very experienced and skilled at something. (Perhaps in this case "pro" could mean "proficient" instead of "professional"...)

I thought I saw emuboobs
"Genuine self-esteem, however, consists not of causeless feelings, but of certain knowledge about yourself. It rests on the conviction that you — by your choices, effort and actions — have made yourself into the kind of person able to deal with reality. It is the conviction — based on the evidence of your own volitional functioning — that you are fundamentally able to succeed in life and, therefore, are deserving of that success." - Onkar Ghate

There is more than one way to use an emulator. Some people use it for the sake of nostalgia; they enjoy the game for what it is. Others like to use it to make videos of superplays/speedruns. I happen to enjoy playing the game as it is and making videos. Also, the approach to both are different. Sometimes I just want to test my own skills, so I play it at normal speeds, etc. Because human reflexes and the like are less of a factor in TAS, making TAS is like being given a problem/puzzle where you can take your time to make unorthodox approaches to solving said problem/puzzle (ie "how can I get past this obstacle as quickly as possible"). Just because someone doesn't know about TAS does not make them noobs. I've had friends who have played on emulators for much longer than I have, yet I was the one who first introduced TAS techniques to them. Just let them enjoy using the emulator the way they want to enjoy it.
