About this game

This is Race Game released by Square in 1999 that has Final Fantasy series popular character "Chocobo" as a main character. Offence and defence by using Abilities and Magic Stone is feature. For details, please see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chocobo_Racing By the by, all this game's music is arrangement of Final Fantasy's. (excluding ending theme)

Emulator

  • PCSX-RR v0.1.3
  • TAS Soft Graphics Plugin 0.2
  • TAS Sound Plugin 0.2 (When movie playback, I recommend using Eternal SPU Plugin or Iori's DirectSound Driver. It provides superior sound without desync.)
  • BIOS: SCPH-1000.bin

ROM version

This run uses (J) version ROM. The reason that is 9th stage "Fantasia" difficult is very different between (J) and (U). In (U) version's this stage, there are many guardrails that prevents sliding off the track. So (J) version is more difficult than (U).

Spin Turbo

This is very important technique for saving time. If player keep on doing drift a certain amount of time, it would spin as a penalty. In the second time of spinning, player can get high speed by pressing acceleration button. But acceleration direction is decided player's direction at timing pressing button, so it is difficult to efficient use this by human power.

Luck Manipulation

In this run, I intended to get specific Magic Stone from Random Magic Stone as much as. (Mainly, Haste and Reflect) Main method for getting specific Magic Stone is:
  • Changing timing getting Random Magic Stone.
  • Charging to opponent.
  • Doing Spin Turbo and changing timing it.
Normally in this game, player is attacked about five times at least by Magic Stone or Ability in 1 race. (excluding earlier courses) In this run, I minimalize opponent's attack by Luck Manipulation.

Takes damage to save time

In 9th stage rival is Bahamut. His ability "Mega Flare" gives terrible damage to all opponents. It is impossible to prevent using this ability, and opponents can't guard or avoid this attack. So in this run, I relieved this damage by absorbing smaller damage instead at the last minute.

Mukki: Judging...
Mukki: Accepting for publication. A great run, although it's unfortunate that the game doesn't allow for many shortcuts. Episodes 7 and 9 were the run highlights. Good work.
sgrunt: Looks like this is a game I can dump reliably, so processing.

Thanks for telling how to turn off all those texts in the video, they are really annoying for me. Even if I could read it, I would turn it off. Most of the action looked very well optimized. I was only wondering about the very last race. Isn't it possible to do some more luck manipulation so that you don't stop twice in the last race (at positions 12:40 and 13:28 in the second part)? (Submission text explains that now). I dislike the ROM choice although there is a good reason for it. (yes vote)

Thanks for the nicovideo links! This run looked like a pretty fun racing game, though most of the time you didn't get a chance to interact with the other racers. (You did lap them in at least one of the races.) I'd like some more explanation about the different powers and racers, but I definitely give this a Yes vote. Good job!
Used to be a frequent submissions commenter. My new computer has had some issues running emulators, so I've been here more sporadically. Still haven't gotten around to actually TASing yet... I was going to improve Kid Dracula for GB. It seems I was beaten to it, though, with a recent awesome run by Hetfield90 and StarvinStruthers. (http://tasvideos.org/2928M.html.) Thanks to goofydylan8 for running Gargoyle's Quest 2 because I mentioned the game! (http://tasvideos.org/2001M.html) Thanks to feos and MESHUGGAH for taking up runs of Duck Tales 2 because of my old signature! Thanks also to Samsara for finishing a Treasure Master run. From the submission comments:
Shoutouts and thanks to mklip2001 for arguably being the nicest and most supportive person on the forums.

I was going to ask that myself, but then I remembered Gamefaqs.

I played this when it came out. Cute, fun game. You obliterated the times. By the way, why race as Goblin? If memory serves, his cart has great handling. I guess that might be essential for getting around the corners at high speeds. Edit: Now you're using Black Mage too. I guess his special ability is worth having for enhancing the effect of the magic stones. Edit again: Then again, you are using Chocobo's Dash ability. Does Black Mage have a high top speed or something?

The reason for using Goblin and Black Magician is they have advantage of speed. Instead they have disadvantage of handling. But it is no problem in TAS. Because if you can push button quickly, you would be able to get great cornering performance.

I figured the reason he used Goblin was so that the AI Goblin wouldn't attempt to steal his items, like he did when he was forced to race against him. And the switch to the Black Mage was when there was enough racers available that Goblin wouldn't be forced into racing. But going faster is a good reason too. If I could vote, I'd give it a yes. I was entertained until the end.

Hi sparky, Well, this game is in my PSX wishlist but thanks for TASing this game. However, your TAS is great, especially in using a speed trick....... I vote YES!!!

I encoded this using the OpenGL plugin: http://www.youtube.com/view_play_list?p=7C0B928A71D19E24 I love this game and this TAS is great. I watched it a couple of times last night, and had a lot of fun all the time.
You're just fucking stupid, everyone hates you, sorry to tell you the truth. no one likes you, you're someone pretentious and TASes only to be on speed game, but don't have any hope, you won't get there.
