To FatRatKnight! On the first boss, how do you get the enemy on the left side to open up at frame 4926 in your abandoned run? I can only get it to open up at frame 4930. Has it something to do with that you use the new ppu? i use the old. Can it be the rom version? i use the (U) version, but i dont know what dump it is, it doesn´t say.
Honestly, I don't know. It just worked out that way, and I have made no serious investigation into it.

Can't answer the latter question. Rules of this site. But yes, I use the good dump. I think, anyway. When playing a movie, the checksum should match whatever ROM you're playing. As I'm using a theoretically good dump, and when looking at the movie information, if the movie file's checksum matches with your ROM, you should be good.

I had to check it out for myself, and i also noticed that you got the enemy on left upper corner to appear on frame 4926. I dont know on which frame i got it to appear, but i noticed that the boss doesn´t act the same way every time. Did some quick testing with new and old ppu, and the (U) version. Killed a cople of enemies random, got to the boss, the enemy on the left upper corner opened up at frame 4937 with the new ppu. Same thing with the old ppu, only got it to open a cople of frames earlier. So as you see, the rom choice or the new ppu doesn´t seem to do any difference. It could be something to do with how many enemies you kill, or if you got certain item boxes to appear. Hard to say!

Check this out! (use old ppu) the guardian legend - skip the transformation sequence While messing around one day, i came up with this neat trick that let´s you skip the transformation sequence. The great thing about it is that it saves a lot of time.

Not to sound harsh, but one of the key components of auto-scrolling segments is to spend the time entertainingly. It's typically difficult to always know what is entertaining and what isn't, but do compare my abandoned run with yours and tell me which one catches more of your attention. It's great that you go for fastest possible (auto-scrolling, eh...), but that alone isn't enough in auto-scroller segments. Kill every enemy possible might help, maybe. But there are times you just stand there. There is a time you kill an enemy without giving it a chance to show off its flashy moves, and in the moments that follow, you actually have nothing to do. And the music is entirely ignored. There is something written here in an effort to raise awareness of what to do when the only thing you can do is wait. Look under Create art even when waiting. At least ask yourself this: Even when there is nothing of note happening, do you get that sense watching the runs? Again, it's difficult to really get a perfect sense of what is and what isn't entertaining. But now that I said this, would you be willing to try that opening Corridor again with these thoughts in mind? I don't expect your habits to change overnight, but try listening to the music and see if you can act in time with it. Better if you can kill some enemies distinctly to the music, too. Without interfering with getting to the end, of course. If leaving an enemy alive (longer) will have more action going on in the screen, keep it alive long enough to see that action. There are certainly people hoping to see the run produced eventually. Keep trying and see if you can train in a new sense for entertainment! I can't say it's easy, but if done successfully, its beauty is rarely matched.

I´m glad to hear your opinions, everything is welcome. See, i´m only a beginner when it comes to this, so i need all the help i can get. Saying all that, i know the opening corridor has it´s flaws, so i knew from the start that i had to go back and change some things, or even start the whole thing over. Yes it´s hard to know whats entertaining and not. But i agree, there are times that i do nothing, and i killed the enemies a bit too fast. I can start the whole thing over.

Is this still being worked on? :/ Edit: That SDA video operates at a terrible frame rate making it hard to know whats happening half the time. I'm sure it was once considered "good" in 2005 however..

I can't imagine how it was even considered "good" quality back then. Anyway, a new SDA run was verified a while back, so it will be hopefully be posted soon. Updates seem slow over there at the moment.

Hi there. Long time lurker posting for the first time here. I was hopping around on Nicovideo and found this Guardian Legend TAS from a few months ago: http://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm14753518 Looks like it clocks in at around 57 minutes or so. There is a LOT of sloppiness in the run, and some of the shooting stages even looked like they could have been done in real time. I don't think it would have stood a chance to get published here. Nonetheless, I figured it'd be nice to share, just in case it might be useful in some way or another (route, etc). The TAS is tagged "does NOT use death as a shortcut", so you won't see that being used as a time saver (I presume death would be used in a publishable run, but not positive). It does, however, use the transformation skip mentioned in this thread. Anyhow, sloppy or not, it's nice to see someone took the time of going all the way through the game! Hopefully there might be a good idea or two embedded in the TAS somewhere. I'm really not knowledgeable enough to know for sure.

Thanks for the link (I haven't watched it yet and I hope it's one of those free links where you aren't required to register). I have "lobbied" for years (true story) for someone to work on an any% and 100% run to no avail. Sure, some started a bit but all of them couldn't for various reasons go through with the whole run and as it looks now, we will most likely wait years before someone really gives this a real shot.

Well, here's a link to the TAS that doesn't require a Nicovideo account: http://www.nicozon.net/watch/sm14753518 There is potential for lots of fun playaround in the shmup stages, but there's very, very little of that in this run. Rapidfire missed shots abound. This TAS also gets 2400(?) chips - not sure if that's entirely necessary from a speed standpoint. Either he had a good reason, or was lazy about luck manipulation? I'm not sure - I don't know enough about the mechanics of it. I wonder how long the supposed new speed demo submission is, and if it uses death as a shortcut.

Item drops are pretty much on a fixed list (from earlier tests). Killing enemies advances this list. So manipulation isn't trivial. If I'm going to continue, I will need a team much like what the DTC has us in. I do not believe this is a single person project. Also, I'm hoping for a new release of FCEUX before working on the first frame again. A few issues were detected that I hope are resolved by then.

I'm interested in doing the autoscrollers for entertainment. This doesnt sound like an overly complicated game like most other games.

So... Have we established that Sonikkustar and FattyFatFatratknight will work together on this? Sonik, the thing about autoscroller stages is that Fatratknight did an excellent work as he synched his moves with the music. If you have the motivation to do that, that would be a huge bonus. And please kill lots of enemies as possible :p

I have the Dream Team Contest 4 to complete first, but once that's over, I'll probably have plenty of time to work on things here. I can put Alien Hominid on hold for this. And I'll make sure not to take any shortcuts.

Why didn't you suggest this game for DTC 4?

I'd generally think an autoscroller would be a poor choice for a competition, since judgment of the autoscrolling parts is so subjective.

Totally agree that the shooter stages should have some fun Gradius-like maneuvering and lots of explosions. Though this game is MUCH more lenient with taking hits than most shooters are, so taking hits may be an often-used strategy. On that note, one thing to remember is that certain score markers reward you with a life refill. This was abused at least once in a later part of the Nicovideo run - the author spent an entire shooter stage purposefully not killing as many enemies as possible, keeping their score just below the right threshold, so they could have an opportune level-up life refill during a boss fight. So going willy-nilly in destroying every enemy possible in these stages might not always be the fastest strategy.

I'll just paste his already done work then. I dont want to waste his previous effort. Its gonna be annoying to get it to work on Old PPU though. EDIT: Err...Nevermind. It seems to sync perfectly. I still dont know about general routes though. I'll look into it later.

If you do not recieve any answer from someone within like 24 hours, please continue with your run for the time being. Speaking of which, if I recall correctly, you said you had to restart (for some reason). But the good thing is that you can simply copy all of your current input to your new movie file right? Once again, loved how you moved with the music. Will you be working on both any% and 100% run? Hope you'll start with 100% because we can't simply get enough of this game :)

Short answer: No. New PPU was found to be a bad thing to TAS under, for one reason or another. Sadly, there is no sync in the attempt to use Old PPU for my current movie, calling for a restart from scratch. So, I can only "copy" the run by redoing it from scratch and following to the best of my ability the stuff I've already done. While I am thankful I didn't beat half the game when this was discovered, it was still discouraging at the time. EDIT: Oh, there's another question I missed. Whoops.

I'll probably start with 100%. I will also take time-entertainment trade-offs in this run, such as actually displaying all the neat weapons I get. EDIT2: ...
