yeah there should be a guide about that frame advance thing or something
"Genuine self-esteem, however, consists not of causeless feelings, but of certain knowledge about yourself. It rests on the conviction that you — by your choices, effort and actions — have made yourself into the kind of person able to deal with reality. It is the conviction — based on the evidence of your own volitional functioning — that you are fundamentally able to succeed in life and, therefore, are deserving of that success." - Onkar Ghate

Yep, this "Frame advance" is the next best thing since we discovered save states! First, we can go back and fix our mistakes without rewinding all the way from scratch, and now we can even stop the game until we want it to run! Is there nothing we can't do at this point?

I hear rumors of something called "hawtkeys". I wonder what they are...

I just wish the menus were more convenient to use. Options - Input - Auto Hold - [button] is getting very old. Can we move all the important items, like controller buttons and savestates, to their own dedicated menu, for quicker access? We also thought of trying to involve the keyboard a bit. Maybe typing "frameadvance" could do the same thing as navigating the menu and clicking it every time?

Someone could always try to get the bounties for this game at SDA. http://forum.speeddemosarchive.com/post/cash_bounties_for_speedruns361.html

Two hours left, I guess I'd better open VBA. Hey, what buttons are on a GBA?

Strangely, they don't mention what platform - the GBA version is shorter than the XBox version, by quite a bit.

So, anyone got past the title screen yet?

You mean that you should go buy the game and dump the ROM, right?

Let's just stick to "obtaining" the game.

C'mon, its just everyone getting excited. With T-minus 80 minutes to go, we are all waiting with baited breath for the announcement that team Tortoise won by 5 minutes of who won.

One hour left, is it too late to join a team? I just ordered the game for dumping the ROM later on.

(Fun fact: I contributed absolutely nothing to the TAS my team put together other than Acmlm, who I found in some random drop on the first stage) (actually, I never ran the ROM for more than about 10 seconds -- the throttle I use to keep my core temp below shutdown range doesn't even permit VBA to run at full speed. )

For better viewing: function DispEnemyCounter(x,y) local Enemies = 0x03000328 gui.text(x,y,"To Kill: " .. memory.readbyte(Enemies)) end function DispAmmo() local AmmoAD = 0x03000472 local GrenadeAD = 0x03000474 gui.text(32,3,memory.readword(AmmoAD)) gui.text(32,16,memory.readbyte(GrenadeAD)) end while true do DispEnemyCounter(0,30) --x,y DispAmmo() vba.frameadvance(); end

Here's a script for you, guys: http://paste2.org/p/1085691 It's tweaked for 1-4, but remove certain comments and comment out some others, and it can work for other stages. For those who didn't bother trying to figure out the script, it is capable of detecting hitboxes and predicts the RNG for us.

And here's mine: http://acmlm.org/tas/hominid/hominid.lua It shows hitboxes, enemy hit points, random increments, enemy locations (direction/distance) for 1-4 and 2-4, and of course things like shots and grenades, with an option to manually lock/increment the random value or set the weapon (for testing):

I did an encode of the Team Tortoise run. If someone wants to tackle the first and second place runs for encoding, feel free, if not I'll get them up tomorrow, since it is after midnight for me atm. http://www.mediafire.com/?e87jff47762hux5

Great job, Team 5 – you beat us by almost as much as we beat Team Tortoise! I applaud your victory because now no one expects us to redo the movie super-optimally and submit it. Do we get to know what the other games you were considering, Truncated? I just want to know for curiosity's sake.
