I watched the tutorials and they helped me out a lot, now I know where I make mistakes on my TAS attempts and how memory addresses can help me find out what exactly is the maximum speed a character can achieve in-game time.. +D I would never have found the glitches I found in Kenseiden if it wasn't for Subpixels, Y speed, and of course, putting it all to the test =P (Not sure if I should point this out, but ... I thought "adelikat" was pronounced more like "a-delhi-cat" (with portuguese/japanese A at the beginning, well, it is the way to read it around here in Brazil, except people who don't know english would read it with 2 japanese A) (we in Brazil read TAS exactly like Taz) (....at least I do) XD

Well, it's a shortening of his name, Andrés Delikat. "A" is pronounced like you would pronounce the letter, as you would when reading "A. Delikat".

Hey, Adelikat, I'm wondering, what are the best settings to publish FCEUX emulator videos in Windows Movie Maker with? I've tried Windows HD Media settings, but those scrunch up the sides of the video, and I've tried the default settings, but didn't like how it lowered the visual and audio quality. There are still more options to try, but for conveniences sake, I'm wondering if you could guide me so I won't have to go through a process of trial and error.

Hi FionordeQuester. Creating a TAS is a completely different task opposed to creating an encode of a TAS, so this tutorial will most likely not cover the encoding steps. If you want to create a high quality encode of a TAS, have a look at the encoding guide instead. If you just need a quick encode, you can use "AVI/WAV -> record AVI" in FCEUX with a codec of your choice. A good choice for this is h264 with quality factor 20 (for example from "ffdshow-tryouts"). You can also test quality factor 0 (almost lossless) to see if the file size stays small enough for your needs. FCEUX and all other emulators I know of will use WAV for the audio part (about 10MB per minute!), so you might like to reencode the audio afterwards. As said, the encoding guide will explain this in much more detail. (My personal recommendation: don't use Windows Movie Maker, at least not for video games. AVIsynth is quite easy to use, and allows much more complex tasks.)

I watched the whole thing and I really enjoyed your tutorial, especially the optimizing video - I never realized how much fractional pixels and speed values could make such a difference before. My only complain so far that it was often tedious at times and the videos could have easily been cut in half without losing content, if only for all the trouble you had moving windows around your minuscule recording area. I vote for a lua script tutorial in a future video.

I'm sorry adelikat, but the tutorial was seriously long and you took more time adjusting the recording window. You should do it again. I have Sony Vegas so I could edit like this if you sent it to me =D But forgetting those points, it was useful, especially the RAM Watch.

Even I don't understand portugese, this is hardly the best TAS tutorial. It was quite oridinary, only the basics. I'm sure you didn't generalized what you what your're saying/doing, so that newcomers can easily understand TASing and pick up any game. You also posted this into the wrong threat.

question when I TAS on snes9x in the end it messes up my button presses and the recording is mess up how do I fix that? im using snes9x v1.51

You fix it by using a better emulator, like lsnes or Bizhawk. Snes9x is deprecated and not accepted on the site anymore.

Snes9x 1.51 is deprecated, but it is still accepted on the site. Just a small correction here.

Link to video I recorded this (very) brief TAS tool showcase for dwangoAC's recent appearance on The New Screen Savers. There's running commentary in the annotations and a more detailed (but still newbie-friendly) explanation in the description. It's obviously a bit rushed, since it had to fit specifically within 30 seconds, but I think it could set people brand new to TASing on the right track.

I think this link is pretty self explanatory. I've been working on it over the course of the last year, from script writing, to vocal recording, and video/audio editing, etc. Hopefully it's up to par with the community's standards! Very nice guide! Nice job at showcasing the usual TAS tools, the concept of TASing (and speedrunning as a bridge for those unfamiliar), and even the common questions and concerns, all in a very digestible 8.5 minute video format. It looks quite accessible to newbies to me, but it's hard to accurately judge that from a non-newbie perspective. I like the variety of games/TASes shown off too - obviously there's a common Mario (and Smash) theme, but it still does a good job at showing the various kinds of TAS runs that exist. A few very minor nitpicks: • There's no reference to TAStudio or such TAS editing tools (while I don't use them, there are many others who do and who would recommend them to newbies). • Maybe it could've gone a bit more in-depth about the fact that TAS files are input files, and the sort of things you can do with that (opening them, hex-editing them, etc.). Then again, maybe that might not add that much and might unnecessarily overcomplicate it. • The fact that Mupen64 and Cheat Engine are primarily shown off for the RAM watching segment (and Mupen64 in general for other segments). Understandable given the community you come from, and where probably a good chunk of the audience would also come from, but it still feels iffy to show off such a deprecated emulator that has its slew of issues. Points for still referencing (images of) the tools of other emulations, at least. • The comments about the glitches/TASes = fake argument seem like they would fit better earlier in the video rather than near the end of it. Most people who could be convinced by that message probably wouldn't sit through six and a half minutes of tutorial first. All in all though, definitely the best guide of its kind that I've seen so far. Nice job, and definitely would recommend it to newbies.

I've been really busy this last week, so sorry for taking so long to reply to you, Mothrayas. Anyway, I want to say thank you for taking the time to write your in-depth thoughts, as I truly appreciate the critique/feedback! I may eventually get around to making a response video that covers some of the potential topics you mentioned. To add one thing to the Mothrayas list: It is missing lua scripting. For most people it's a better RAM Watch tool which allows better representation than the normal RAM Watch at first, but it can do other things aswell. There's also another thread somewhere (can't find right now) were I and others wanted to create a tutorial series, but it never went somewhere due to the fact that noone wanted to talk. My intend wasn't really a tutorial ("do this, then do that"), but more like explaining from a generalized abstract view how things work. That means there'd be a theory part and a practical part. The first would be very minimalistic sketches and explaining, the other one showing actual work in a emulator. In order to not take as long as you did to create a video, I'd recommend keeping post-production as minimal as possible.

I've noticed there is no tutorial for multiplayer. Is anyone considering doing one? I've given consideration to it, but I'm unsure of what capture software to use.
