About the game

In this game you set off to find Gargamel and rescue three Smurfs that have disappeared from the village. This game is very adventurous and has a lot of variety. It features 12 levels in total and 3 boss fights.

About the run

  • Plays on hardest difficulty
  • Takes damage to save time
  • Uses warps (glitch warp in Act 1)
  • Genre: Platform
Emulator: VisualBoyAdvance v23 The movie will desync on v19~22.
This is an improvement of 24 seconds over my published movie.

Level comments

LevelFrames savedComments
Menu+2Not sure how I saved them.
1+1242The main improvement in this run was the warp glitch in this level. Enter the stump and hold "up".
2+2Moved into the goal earlier. Apparently I messed it up in my previous movie.
3+12Better strategy and optimization.
4+24Better strategy, skipping some vines. At one place the frogs submerge just 3 frames before I arrive so I have to take a long detour >_>. Also, I manipulate luck for the Snake (the spawning place) in this level. RNG changes every few frames when there's a mosquito flying around. If the mosquito at this level's end it killed, you can wait all you want and the spawning spot of the Snake doesn't change.
Snake+84Got the best spawning place, but didn't get best luck with when the Snake lifts its head - It's not possible to hit him at the first opportunity repeatedly (unless it is where he lifts his head, but I haven't seen him do so when testing). I still got quite good luck, and it's probably not possible to get him to lift his head at the first opportunity (too time-consuming).
5+0Nothing to say here.
6+0Unchanged.
7+0Almost unchanged. As I explained in the post in the submission thread, this level didn't hex-edit properly so I had to fix something and that's why I lost an additional frame at Act 12 (1) due to the fading screen taking longer for some reason. Also I didn't kill a bird which is another bad side-effect of hex-editing but I left this mistake in, since it is not major and I can't seem to fix it. Also I'm too lazy to re-TAS this autoscroller.
8+0Unchanged.
9+34Grabbed and dropped the springboard at the end, rather than going the way around.
Dragon+0Unchanged.
10+0Unchanged.
11+0Unchanged.
12 (1)-3Lost probably due to lag. This level and Act 7 are the only levels that aren't hex-friendly so I had to re-play this.
12 (2)+48Kept my HP in the beginning in order to jump off of a tomato later to save some time.
Gargamel+0Unchanged.
= 1446 frames saved.

Possible improvements

Manipulating the snake to appear from the middle-left and lift his head at the first opportunity. It's probably impossible to manipulate. Apart from that, I'm not aware of any possible improvements. Maybe a few more optimizations could be made in the unchanged levels, but I doubt there's anything worth more than 10 frames.

Closing words

Enjoy the run.

The submitted movie takes damage accidentally in Act 7, a negative side-effect of hex-editing. I fixed it here: New movie Youtube However, there is another (yet tiny) mistake in the same level where I don't kill a bird due to improper positioning, but I can't seem to fix this problem. Changing positioning slightly results in a quick desync... I decided to leave this mistake in.

I know you've worked hard on this TAS, judging by all the new glitches you've found. Paired with an amazing soundtrack, this well made TAS deserve a "YES" vote from me.

The music in this game is awesome. Reminds me of 8-bit demos. I would be tempted to vote yes just because of that even if the run was otherwise uninteresting. Fortunately that's not the case, so I can vote yes in good conscience.

Looks great and it's a good improvement to the published movie. Also, the warp glitch in Act 1 is interesting. Voting Yes.

Nice going, and good entertainment in the autoscrollers. (At the end of Act 2, I think the hero was bobbing his head to the music's rhythm.) Yes vote.
Used to be a frequent submissions commenter. My new computer has had some issues running emulators, so I've been here more sporadically. Still haven't gotten around to actually TASing yet... I was going to improve Kid Dracula for GB. It seems I was beaten to it, though, with a recent awesome run by Hetfield90 and StarvinStruthers. (http://tasvideos.org/2928M.html.) Thanks to goofydylan8 for running Gargoyle's Quest 2 because I mentioned the game! (http://tasvideos.org/2001M.html) Thanks to feos and MESHUGGAH for taking up runs of Duck Tales 2 because of my old signature! Thanks also to Samsara for finishing a Treasure Master run. This is awesome. I love what you do in the autoscrolling sections; especially the spikes section. It's hilarious when you fly into spikes without getting hurt.

Excellent execution, sadly I am late so this is already accepted, but for what it's worth I cast a late yes vote.
