I installed the latest FFDShow. I installed the latest XVid. Yet that doesn't change the fact that when I open the movie, Windows Media Player sends out a request for a codec, encounters an "Error downloading codec", and forces me to look at water ripples while I listen to the sound. What did I do wrong? On the other hand, installing all those extra codecs has caused the icons of all the movies encoded by Phil to become the first frame of the movie on my computer. Before, only the ones from Bisqwit had that. --- Wow, right after I posted that, I found this helpful link. I just hope I didn't mess up Media Player when I downloaded one of those all-in-one codecs in desperation. --- Well, GSpot says it's XVid, so I don't know what's wrong. I've been able to watch eleven other movies on this computer with no problem.

Yeah, I first had a bad experience with DefilerPak, then with what's supposed to be a great one, ACE's mega codecs pack. After both screwed something up in some way or another, I'm done with codec packs. Download GSpot as that page reccommends. It is extremely helpful. Just put a shortcut to it on your desktop, and when you have a movie you're curious about, drag it right onto the icon.

I know I downloaded the Codec Pack All in 1 6.0.1.9 (and stupidly installed it multiple times to make sure I had everything), and I think I might have downloaded the K-Lite Codec Pack 2.31. --- Well, the link to K-Lite Codec Pack 2.31 doesn't even work anymore, so now I'm not so sure.

I actually have klite codec pack installed right now. So far I have had no issues with it. I hear lot of bad things about codec packs in general, but so far it's all hear say for me. Do you use windows media player to watch these? Bad boy :) I would like to take a moment and recommend Core Media Player to all Windows users. Ditch the crappy WMP. http://www.corecoded.com/

There's also Media Player Classic. It can play most files, and if you have RealCrappyPlayer installed it can play those files as well, same with Quicktime movies. Actually you can just install them and then cripple them (delete all files except dll files so they can't possibly run). Also, MPlayer is available on Windows. Get it here. It is supposed to play anything. Also, I don't recomment codec packs. I once installed one and later that day the entire operating system went straight to hell (had to reinstall) Granted, it would have happened eventually (what with broken windows and all) but I blame it on the codec pack. Just use GSpot to determine what specific codec you need and then go look for just that codec.

Oh yeah, I tried Media Player Classic on my other computer. But which media player is the one that lets you change the speed of the movie? I like doing that.

When in doubt, VLC media player will usually have the codec you're looking for.

The KIrby movie is encoded using the XVid codec and MEncoder.

That would be Media Player Classic. Hold down CTRL and press the up and down arrow keys. Or go to the Play menu and select increase/decrease rate.

All right, I downloaded MPlayer and it plays the movie just fine, but is there any way to scan back and forth in it? I'm having to watch it all over because my screensaver came up in the middle of it and crashed the player.

Assuming you talk about MPlayer, use arrow keys.

Hah, I almost started to wonder if that was it. The problem with keyboard input is that I don't have the patience to dig up the documentation to find out what each key does. I like when all the keyboard commands are also included in the GUI, so I have a choice between menus and keys.

Movies not working for me either, used the newest XVID install too. Its something with the movie not with the codec. All other XVID movies work but not this one. Mediainfo reports that the framerate is higher then 60FPS, so that could be it. Nope, even almighty Winamp can't play this. EDIT: Found out what it is. Your movies header isn't correct so it can't tell if its xvid or not. Booboo in your recording, have to do it over again. BSplayer reports this

This is overall a linux encodeing problem not working out well for windows systems. Maybe encode the xvid better next time? Cause we all have XVID installed, what your asking us to install is a native linux compiler driver in windows ontop of xvid to work WaiWai world also dosen't work. Fix your encoder settings bisquit cause your movies don't work

Yes it probably was a mistake to use XVid. I'll try to not use it, since libavcodec has always worked better. For the record, this has nothing to do with Linux. The only thing that was different in the encoding of Kirby Super Star and in the encoding of Bonanza Bros (the latest XVid movie before Kirby) was that in Kirby I used the "cartoon" setting, which has been suggested a couple of times by different people here. Edit: I didn't record Wai Wai world. Your tone is also somewhat aggressive - I wouldn't mind an apology if your claims appear to be mistargeted.

Actually I think it has to do with something OTHER then the XVID codec. Exhusted from options I downloaded a Kazaa lite codec pack (newest) and over-writen all my codecs and played the movie. It looks like some players like winamp etc are over-writeing the MP4 codec with its own version and why it wasen't working. So while it said it was having XVID problems it was this instead. Got all movies working again, downloading kirby again to see if this is indeed whats going on. Edit: List of Kazaa lite codec packs that fixed the problem with updated MP4 drivers. Kazaa Lite Mega all codec pack http://www.free-codecs.com/download/K_Lite_Mega_Codec_Pack.htm Kazaa lite smaller packs http://www.free-codecs.com/download/K_Lite_Codec_Pack.htm

What was needed is to read. The solution is there.

It's not a patch, but a filter. Evidently, you were needed to install XviD and this filter to work it fully. FFDShow is good if it is installed. I hope it doesn't need something. Maybe I should remove all my codecs and filters to be sure. Anyway, it is working pretty nice for me ;P.
