Well, that's pretty much how her solo songs are treated in-universe too ("Tell me she's not."), so that's what you're supposed to be thinking... Sounds to me you haven't fully accepted the inherent ridiculousness of actually watching My Little Pony yet (and then not caring because it's a great show). That said, we're a bunch of people who are going to IRC group watch the very first animated MLP special from 1984, Rescue at Midnight Castle, this weekend. Poke me on IRC if you want to join. I'm sure some people are going to watch it with the expectation that it's crap, but I'm having an open mind. After all, that's what we G4 fans tell the non-fans to have when we want them to watch it, and I'm not going to be the hypocrite.
I don't roll my eyes because it's silly. I roll my eyes because her musical numbers are bad. I couldn't make it past the first two lines of her cupcake song before the song itself got to me and I clicked elsewhere. And I've already seen Rescue at Midnight Castle, but thanks for the invite. I was curious about where the franchise came from, so I sat down with my niece and found an upload on youtube. I was expecting the girly pink overload from the G3 cartoons, but ended up with a demon king threatening to kill Spike. Not even Friendship has threatened death on any of its characters! Also, weird voice aside, I liked the Spike presented in that one much better than the current. His animation was far more reptilian, and the reason he was with the ponies had much more meaning and impact. Really, the biggest flaws I found with the show were merely artifacts of the 80s. In the end, I think it's a good show, and it's been a while since children's entertainment had something this good. I just think it's far overrated, and I don't get what all the fuss is about. By the way, Fluttersy for life, even though Rarity has the best voice actress on the show.

Also, for those of you actually starting watching, don't listen to anybody who says to start anywhere that isn't the pilot, they're dumbs. Start with the pilot, watch in order, give it five episdoes before you pass your final verdict. If you don't like it at that point, you're probably never going to like it.
The pilot is a decent introduction to the characters and the world, but I don't really think it represents the tone of the series overall. In case of someone being very adamant on using a single episode to determine the quality of the show, there are plenty of episodes that do this better. (Bridle Gossip, Winter Wrap Up, Feeling Pinkie Keen, Sonic Rainboom or Green Isn't Your Color. Possibly Applebuck Season, Dragonshy or Suited for Success. I would almost recommend Party of One as it is imo the best episode, but it won't have nearly the same impact if you don't have the chance to get comfortable with the characters first ^^.) I do agree with the 5 episode cutoff though (I usually say 4 since I don't really like Griffon the Brush-Off, but eh.) Other than that, it should obviously be watched in order, it airs in a certain order for a reason.

I also think Tara Strong is weak voice actress.
PREPOSTEROUS! I've always been a fan of Tara Strong, even though she doesn't really stand out here because everyone in the show does a great job. Not really liking Twilight as a character doesn't help either... And are you Loco in the Coco? Everyone knows Pinkie Pie is best pony. /Opinons lol/ But for serious, I find it interesting that some of the parts you're mentioning negatively are among my favorites in the show :P. There are enough diversity in the show for anyone to find something they like I suppose.
Even the best player is limited by the speed of his fingers, or his mind's ability to control them. But what happens when speed is not a factor, when theory becomes reality?

Oh, 100% agree with this. I do believe you miss out on some important characterization if you don't start from the beginning.

Actually, not completely true. Lauren wanted to make a more story arc plot driven series, but Hasbro wanted episodes to be viewable in any order. --- Also, the "invite" for watching Rescue at Midnight Castle wasn't to FW specifically, but to anyone who might want to join in. So yeah. I've found out that I fucking adore 70's-80's cartoon animation style. I have high hopes for the G1 cartoon, if Rescue is good I totally intend to check out the movie, and at least the ten episode pilot of the cartoon proper.

They are pink/purple, they have big eyes, they have cute voices, they are shiny, so just looking at them can be very stimulating. You empathize with them on a similar level as you would with your little sister, a youngish girlfriend or your daughter. Their cuteness and their little flaws trigger powerful helper instincts that make you want to make sure they're always alright (by watching all episodes). Very addicting. It's the devil's work.

My Little Pony wasn't a man's thing until very recently, though.

I can't help but feel like it is popular, only because it is popular. Its just meh, at best.

In other words, it's a fad. I think a contributing factor to that is the irony of it all. While it is, on some level, legitimately good, I think many people play it up as much as they do because being a man who enjoys a girl's cartoon makes them feel special. And since it does have actual quality, they can get away with it. Just my take.

Not everybody is as open and proud of it as, say, I am. A rather large chunk of the community lives in shame because of it - for fear of being ridiculed or otherwise.

Okay, open about it, sure, but when you claim to be proud that you're watching a show really meant for kids, that's probably a sign of that you're talking it too far.

"Proud" isn't really the right word for it. I'm not ashamed of it, and I tell people who ask about it that I like it (on the internet and IRL).

Have you people lost your minds? When you're legitimately enjoying a show designed for young girls, your masculinity really should come into question. Having an ego that can look beyond bright pink colors has nothing to do with it. What's even scarier is that this MLP phenomenon isn't limited to TASvideos.

What you completely fail to take into the account is that the show was made as something that kids could watch and enjoy, and the parents of said kids could watch and enjoy with them. This created something good enough for even those without the excuse of watching it with their kids to like it.

The step you're forgetting, Vykan, is that the creators were trying to break those boundaries down and create something that could be enjoyed by a wider-than-traditional audience. This ain't your mother's My Little Pony. I still find the magnitude of its popularity baffling, though.

Traditional masculinity is getting old. Which is weird. I watched the first 2 minutes and it felt like a waste of time. Give me some dragon ball z, that is a good cartoon. Haters gonna hate.

I just watched episode 3, and it felt like I was watching Arthur. But with better animation and more girls.

He wasn't talking about you. He was talking about the ones who started this "phenomenon" (as the Wiki puts it).

This is a community. People in a community discuss things. This just happens to be one of them. My intent was not at all to create an argument thread. Could we please just stick with the pony discussion and keep the general hate out?

For me, what's even scarier is that this MLP phenomenon has touched TASVideos. I've seen such a thread in a forum dedicated to the Nintendo 3DS, and everywhere on the net. I thought TASVideos wouldn't have such a thing, until Ferret Warlord submitted that movie. But yeah, it's happening. Anyway. Vykan12, let me explain some stuff to you. This show was made with young children and their parents in mind. Y'know, parents have to watch kids show with their children. They made this show so that parents don't get bored by watching MLP. You are seeing the results of such a mentality. Bronies. Male teens and adults liking this show. Lauren Faust, the show's producer, is even embracing them, by being in touch with them, and by bringing some of their MLP memes in the actual show! For example, Derpy Hooves was a meme made by some brony who noticed an animation error in its eyes. The producer made Derpy Hooves an actual character in the show! Y'know, it's a crazy story. My sources for these informations are Know Your Meme and some bronies. I'm an anti-MLP, and the way I practice my anti-MLPness is to do nothing, and to hope that this fad dies or gets considerably reduced after Season 2. Because every fad has an end.
