Finally solved the problem about the Ninja Gaiden NSF not playing entirely. It's either a bud with FlashNSF or with Not So Fatso, I can't really tell. Anyway, no more YouTube links or broken NSFs, just clear your cache and all should be good now. If it happens again (which shouldn't), I'll be able to fix it quickly.

This is nice. I hope for some Batman and Rygar. And Blue Shadow of the Ninja. Judging by how similar the music there is to Shatterhand, I'm guessing it will be popular.
Without speaking for the list, I must admit Shadow of the Ninja blew me away. I had never even heard about the game, and nhow it definitely contains a few of my favorite NES tracks.

Lot of quality tracks so far, but that Gremlins 2 theme in particular was really catchy and memorable.

I woke up to that tune today.

Loving the list so far. There are two tracks on the list, however, that I think are there just because they are from popular games: Brinstar from Metroid and the Overworld theme from The Adventure of Link. They would definitely not be in my top 100 or even 200 list. Anyone else with me?

I didn't really complain about the list as I didn't really express myself at all, I just agreed with Kyrsimys' on some level. I do find those two songs he mentioned rather bland and not that good and I think I'm entitled to tell others about my opinion when they have done so as well (by giving their votes for the list). Besides, this is an open forum for people to share their opinions and thoughts about the given topic, which in this case is the list in question. As long as the messages stay civil, I see no harm in telling what you think of the list. Your message on the other hand is just pointless bickering and I wish that it ends here.

Actually I was trying to head off pointless bickering by making an observation of internet culture because I've seen these things elevate to the point of incivility. Sorry if it came off as confrontational; was it the sick ferret?

The overworld theme from zelda is very annoying (I just finished playing zelda for the NES and link's awekening for the gbc both on the 3ds). That being said, at least they picked the one from zelda2. As the reviewer said it, "Luckily in Zelda 2, the overworld theme contains a variety of catchy melodies that can be listened to endlessly. The song doesn't loop until about 50 seconds and has four distinct parts". I'd add to that the fact that the melody is played with a smoother sound than that of zelda 1 for example, which makes it less irritating to me. edit: oops, just scrolled down to the horror. zelda 1 overworld is there.

I stopped doing that, except to point out that it's cruel to start "top x" lists in ascending rather than descending order.

My only complaint is that there are way too many mediocore Mega Man songs so far. ;p

I can't say that I disagree with some of your comments, but since the track ratings were made by people from a community (one that enjoys VGM, that is), I guess many people actually like those tracks. Yet, even on that same community, many people (including its reviewer) found that some tracks weren't deserving to be on the list, such as MM3's Shadow Man. My personal opinion is that nostalgia couldn't be abstracted from the ratings; when a game is good and you've played it though your whole childhood, you actually can't tell that it's not extraordinarily good.

Maybe the list could be organized in a different format, where it is a list of the games with the best OST. That way overall quality and variety would be valuable, and the best examples of songs inside each game could be listened to on each entry. I'm enjoying the list so far, and I'm gonna through with it to the end, I just think it would be interesting to see it organized like that somehow.

See the Mere exposure effect for why bad songs from popular games are rated highly. People are familiar with the games because they played them a lot, so they tend to rank the songs in those games higher than they would if the songs didn't have that association.

I have to agree with reviewer "Jace"; a track like #73 sounds absolutely amazing. Meanwhile, a lot of the Zelda tunes and some of the MegaMan ones are (over)rated so highly for how often they have been heard. Honestly, while the list itself turned out very good, I wonder if it would have been even better to have 2 or 3 (or even 1) guys who really know their shit to formulate the list all by themselves from a bunch of candidates.

I agree on both counts, especially on Zelda 2. Did someone find the vibrato button 1 week before shipping and decided that all notes in all tracks in the whole game must have it? It sounds awful. EDIT OMG:

But there is one amazing quality that it shares with every other song on the Zelda 2 soundtrack. That sparkling sheen on the square waves due to the fact that they are always vibrating. Always. Right from the start of the note to the end.

I haven't followed the project closely, but someone in the same community has already done something like it. He's rather knowledgeable about how NES music was made and its technicalities, so it's a rather good read.

Zelda 2 Overworld has a better ranking then Snake Man, Shadow of the Ninja Stage 2, Contra Force Stage 1... Wait, what?

And why is track xxx not on Place 1? I shall begin the mass complaining prematurely!

Interesting list so far! I wonder if I will see anything from Dragon Spirit: The New Legend on this list. That's probably the first game my mind jumps to when I think of "NES Games with moving melodies". Legacy of the Wizard also comes to mind as anticipated.

oh sweet i came across this on the shizz awhile ago during the voting phases, glad to see this has finally been completed. a suitably mammoth effort for a great body of music. personal favorites that i'm hoping have placed highly: shadow of the ninja boss, good weather from gimmick, riddle from akumajou densetsu, chip n dale 1 zone j, m.o.m. from recca, pretty much anything from bucky o'hare, i could go on and on so i'll just stop there. also i'm amused that the only mario song that's appeared so far is the ending from 2 us. and about the glut of mega man (needle man in particular, the only bad stage song in mm3!): seeing as this list is a compendium of a lot of different people's opinions, and nostalgia/associated play experiences is a legitimate element of enjoyment when listening to game music, it's natural that tracks from a highly-played and well-loved series will edge out arguably better tracks from lesser-played games.

Now this totally baffles me. I thought the reviews were there to help people notice small things about the songs they wouldn't have noticed otherwise and to help tell some trivia and other such things. Now what Jace is doing with the Needle Man review is just basically saying "You people are stupid for choosing this song to be this high on the list!" and in my opinion, that's really inappropriate. Why oh why does Jace review songs that he doesn't want to be on the list then?
