Hello! This is Version 2 of my Super Fantasy Zone TAS. This improves the previous publication by 773 frames (12.88 seconds) due to better optimization.

Game Mechanics

  • There are actually a lot of factors that are considered in order to get the boss in each stage to appear. Not only do all the ships have to be destroyed, but they also have to fall completely to the ground. This is why I sometimes destroy the ships from highest to lowest so that I would have some slight leeway with destroying the other ships without losing too mugh time. Other factors including getting rid of all coins & other enemies on screen. But this could be easily be avoided by scrolling the enemies off screen by pressing the opposite direction for one frame.
  • Its faster to throw bombs from a far away because they move faster than Opa-Opa when thrown with a direction held.

Stage Notes

Picknica

Nothing much happening here. I saved some frames before the boss due to attacking the enemies earlier.

Kazarne

I decide to get the Wide Shot because it would allow me to hit the ships without slowing down or stopping for x amount of frames to get into position.
The boss was also faster due to better positioning of the Backfire shots.

Niagaro

Not much has changed other than general bomb optimization. I saved 51 frames from killing the ships faster as well as scrolling the enemies off the screen after all of the ships are destroyed.
The boss is also 6 frames faster because I am slightly closer to the mouth which allowed me to kill it in only 3 frames.

Risscave

I was expecting me to lose frames because I selected the Wide instead of the Cross-Rang. But because of the Wide Shot's distance & I actually managed to save 15 frames!...Well then!

Grandiuss

By going slightly below the ships, I can shoot the Cross-Rang and hit the ships without slowing down not even for a single frame.
I saved 2 frames on the boss by...using the second bomb I didnt throw. Wow.

Le-Picker

I use way less Hurricanes here because I want to spend less time purchasing them in the shop. Each hurricane cost's 2 frames to buy, so the most amount of frames I can stop from is 1.
Since the boss moves to the right first, I start destroying the little rids on the right side instead on the left. This allows me to cover less distance as going right->left is faster than going left->right.

Aflorious

I try to combo more Hurricane shots so that I have more for the boss.I use the same tactic of going just slightly under the ships to kill them without stopping.
Since I didnt kill as many ships with Hurricanes, I have 3 more Hurricane shots for the boss now. The boss got quite an improvement due to some shot optimization. There is some extra lag in this fight unlike the previous movie when I fire the Hurricane shots due to sprite limits. But because the shots still hit multiple Notali, it still saves time.

Menone

I hold back on the Backfire shots to save them up for later bosses. Some bosses are even improved because the Backfire causes a long invincibility delay between shots.

Comments

So after looking back at my previous run, I thought "Hey, This run is a piece of shit. I should try and make it better!". And so I did!
I hope you guys now enjoy this new run!

When I first saw the title of this game a while ago, I thought it was a completely different type of game. Nice improvement over your last movie, it's a short game and the bosses don't stand a chance. Voted yes.
Current thoughts: Hachiemon (J) for GBA.

I will say meh. It's fast and all but it's not entertaining to me. Also, the proper ROM name is: Super Fantasy Zone (J) [!]
When TAS does Quake 1, SDA will declare war. The Prince doth arrive he doth please.

Nice improvement. I like the use of the Wide Shot and the better fights with the Notali. The post-fight entertainment was also a little better, especially at the beginning of the run. Also, good screenshot.
Used to be a frequent submissions commenter. My new computer has had some issues running emulators, so I've been here more sporadically. Still haven't gotten around to actually TASing yet... I was going to improve Kid Dracula for GB. It seems I was beaten to it, though, with a recent awesome run by Hetfield90 and StarvinStruthers. (http://tasvideos.org/2928M.html.) Thanks to goofydylan8 for running Gargoyle's Quest 2 because I mentioned the game! (http://tasvideos.org/2001M.html) Thanks to feos and MESHUGGAH for taking up runs of Duck Tales 2 because of my old signature! Thanks also to Samsara for finishing a Treasure Master run. I continue to be amused by the fact that the only reason we even hear the entire boss music loop is due to the boss rush that is the last level of the game. Yes get.
