This is a game about two speedy sea critters who were assigned several days to retrieve a lost crown. The two critters decided that they would rather spend time jellyfishing, so they retrieved the crown and save the town and Mr. Krabs in half an hour.

Game objectives

  • Emulator used: vba-v24m-svn422
  • Fastest Time
  • Max Cash Shells
  • Hardest Difficulty
Todo: Describe tricks used, strategy changes, new discoveries, etc.

Tricks and glitches

Preserving running speed in air

To maintain the speed of "2" (running) while using Patrick's pants to glide, hold "B" and move. Just before you hold on to Patrick, let go of "B". If you want to stop gliding, yet maintain this speed, press "A" + "B" for 1 frame without any directional input.

Preserving speed after landing

Normally, your speed drops to 0 after you land. By jumping 2 frames before you hit the ground, you can maintain whatever speed you had.

Preserving rushing speed

Normally, the "R" button allows you to move at a speed of 6, until you crash or jump. By moving the opposite direction for 2 frames, you can maintain that speed in air. Also, speed "5" and "6" is the same.

Fall through floors

There's a one frame oppertunity to fall through the floor while moving through small passages. Duck until you reach the frame, and hold "A" + "direction" for 2 frames to fall through the floor. Can be used to go OoB.

Zipping

In the level "Sea Cave", there's huge piles of bones crashing down at set intervals. If you are gliding while the bones are falling, you have a small window to move towards the bones. Instead of killing you, the bones would propel you up.

Skip Boss intro music

As soon as you can pause the game, quickly pause and unpause twice to skip the boss intro music.

Faster world transition

Move towards the end of the current world, and press "select". The screen would quickly fade, and you'll be in the next world.

Graphical glitch

Hold the opposite direction for 2 frames, then run forward for 1 frame. Repeat this to spawn alot of bubbles and foam, eventually glitching the graphics.

Damage boost

Getting damaged while jumping up makes the game think you are on ground. You can then jump again.

Stages capable of going OoB:

  • Management Material
  • Not a Kid
  • Where's the Reef?
  • Sea Cave*
  • Trench Bottom
  • Stairs of Freedom
  • Cyclops Battle*
  • Krusty Krab 2!!
Note: The stages marked with "*" mean that the method to go OoB is different from the rest.

Potential Improvements

Certain stages, most notably the OoB stages and autoscrollers seem to lag differently, or have the exit at a slightly different position. Actions from previous stages seem to affect this. If the cause can be determined and manipulated, it can save time.
Also, if more glitched exits could be found, then it would be nice.

Dooty: Wonderful! Accepting as a huge improvement in both speed and entertainment to an already excellent movie.

...and Mr. Krabs? By the way, why do you skip the credits and return to the World 6 map? Wouldn't it be better to see the credits at the end of the run? Yes vote anyway. Great improvement!

Very nice! The run looks much cleaner & much more entertaining than the previous run. Part of that had to do with the new tricks used. I dont want to spoil anything for other viewers, but the new tricks make the run quite different than the previous run. Yes Vote. What will be your next project now jlun2?

Remember all those password screens at the end of every stage? Well, if credits were shown, the input file would have to be extended to exit the password screen at the end. If input were to end earlier, the credits must be skipped. Sorry.

I've been tasked with this encode, and I'm a bit confused about the ending. I got the run to sync and what I see in my emulator matches http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wgv2BWJ8oP0 but after the movie ends you're just dropped back at the map screen. Is there no "the end" with credits for this submission? That would match http://tasvideos.org/1479M.html but I just want to be sure before I encode.

Every time spongebob says 'WOO', it gets better. I like the speedrun overall. Maybe the length is a bit long but numerous glitch abuses keep it entertaining. I throw my yes vote here (though it's pointless now). I just wonder how did you keep in track and find the exit when out of screen, like in Sea Cave or Trench Bottom.

Trail and error while still recording the input on a copy of the movie file. :P Although this means probably shorter exits exist; though I fail to find them.
