Post subject: Submissions?

I was just wondering why there arent many submissions... does it really take so long? I see there are a few wii games, but not even a single gamecube game... Are they just being worked on? or is it emulator red tape issues?

There are numerous gc games being worked on. Off the top of my head, super monkey ball, paper mario TTYD, zelda wind waker, and zelda twilight princess are all being worked on. Also there is one on the workbench right now, not to mention spiderman 2 had a (rejected) submission as well. There are a few difficulties with tasing dolphin. First of course it is extremely slow. While anyone with a dirt cheap laptop can tas nes games without any problem, the same isn't true of gamecube/wii games. My mid range laptop running a 2.2 ghz 3 core phenom II can hit between 4 and 35 fps, depending on the game. 35 fps is annoying, but not prohibitively slow, but it does make it almost impossible to tas the more demanding games. Second, most of the good games are 3d. In fact, you'll note that the two wii games that have been published are both 2d games. 3d games are far, far more difficult to tas than 2d games. This is bad enough for n64 or ps1 games, but when they also run so slow, and tend to be long games, it becomes extremely time consuming to tas a wii/gc game. Keep in mind too that tasing dolphin has only really been viable for about 4 months now. Give it some time.

You mean published, not submitted. No GameCube games have been published, but there has been one rejected submission (Spider-Man 2) and one cancelled submission (Super Smash Bros. Melee), and there is one run currently in the Workbench (Custom Robo). Also, there is nothing wrong with Dolphin from a TAS standpoint. Save states are more stable than even Mupen-rr's. And yes, GameCube and Wii games are mostly the longest and most complex of all the console games that have runs on this site (especially because most are 3D). Not to mention, some of the runners have really annoying real life commitments that prevent them from working on their long, complex runs. Please just be patient.

Speed shouldn't actually be that much of a hindrance. For one, in my experience at least, Dolphin runs faster than DeSmuME. I have made a couple DS TASes which only ran at 30 fps on my PC; it's far from impossible to TAS on slower emulators. Speed shouldn't make much of a difference because you'd be frame advancing most of the time while TASing anyway.

The playing speed only is bad when you want to rewatch your progress in realtime. I think the even bigger problem with GC/Wii TASing is getting a hold of the ISO's and Wii game files, since those aren't readily available on the internet as much as ROMs for other game systems.

At 5 fps, it takes 200 ms after hitting frame advance to advance a frame. Don't tell me that doesn't matter. It's also not true that you'll always be using frame advance. There are many situations where you would actually want to speed up the game. Not to mention what comicalflop said.

Uh... Nope, not at all. In fact, it takes less than a day to make a video. It's just that optimizing things in a 3d game is really difficult. If it's not optimal, the run will either get rejected, or obsoleted shortly.
