Anch here. I've watched a couple of TAS videos years ago and I decided to join here and try make one of my own. I'm still a noob so I'm not very familiar of some thing like RAM hacking or Luck manipulation etc. Also I'd like to do a TAS of SHMUP games, most preferably, the Gradius series. Adelikat did Gradius and I was so impressed so I've tried doing one myself, a different SHMUP though, it's Salamander (a.k.a Life Force in the US) I used slow downs and save states to make all my moves precise, but I think it's not that impressive for expert veteran TASers. I'm open for new ideas and knowledge, and nice to meet you all.

Welcome to TASvideos Anch. The problem with SHUMP TASes is that the games have to be rather insane or glitchy to make interesting TASes since it's difficult to compete for pure speed. Other ideas could be to never kill the smaller enemies unless required and just circle them, and other kinds of shenanigans. Frame advance might be better, though I don't know if that applies to shmups.

Salamander/ Life Force's max speed is not enough to circle around enemies (like in adelikat's Gradius run) because Salamander is too fast paced compared to gradius. I guess I'll just have a noob TAS run first before doing a full TAS of it. I've thought of doing frame by frame. But I haven't fully understood it yet. And also, Thanks for the welcome.

Welcome! If you're using frame advance you have to hold the keys down you want to press and then press the frame advance key.

Welcome to tasvideos Anch, hope you enjoy your stay. First off, yeah the site has been kind of behaving badly lately, so don't be surprised to get Internal Server errors. 500s are common these days. Also, I'd love to see more Shmup TASes, as I love Gradius games. I also think these games are a good way to get used to being as precise as possible. No worries about frame advance, by the way, you'll get used to using it.

Thanks guys. I'm further studying other details about creating TAS on FCEUX. And I'm on stage 4 of Salamander. I'm trying to aim for a perfect hit run (All enemies must be killed) but there are some parts of the levels where it is almost impossible to hit the enemy because of the fork on the road. It's not like Gradius where Vic Viper is so fast that it can clip through walls (As shown on the Moai stage) I'm either considering a perfect hit run (All kill), or a time attack run (Avoid lags in-game) Of course, that may be too complicated for me.

Here's a suggestion: Don't do speedruns/time attacks/what on autoscrollers. It's usually very boring. Try to make a playaround like the Gradius run. :)

Sounds rather hard, but I'll see what I can do. But it does sound more entertaining than speed running it. I'll give it a shot.
