Popeye is on an adventure to Treasure Island when Brutus comes along and steals his treasure map and captures his friends. Popeye simply uses tool-assisted precision to ruin Brutus' day.

About the TAS

  • Popeye can run by holding B, which is obviously used throughout the run. By picking up cans of spinach he can upgrade his muscles, and at the highest level, he shoots a projectile when he punches.
  • When Popeye ducks, his hitbox is smaller, so we use it to pass under cielings faster.
  • I tested with RAM Watch by watching value 0000DD10, and the projectile and the punch both do the same damage. Sometimes it will look like I'm delaying before hitting the boss, but sometimes the hits wouldn't register as a seperate one if I hit him too soon after the previous.
  • By pressing Down while holding on to a rope, Popeye will go into his idle animation for 1 frame. If we press A, he will jump off much sooner then he normally could.
  • Popeye can't continue a punch from midair on the ground. (ex. if I punch in the air and touch the ground before the animation is done, Popeye won't finish the animation.)
  • The underwater levels in this game are seriously dumb, because you can't hit the cieling or you stall for a few frames, and you can't attack downwards so you have to go out of your way to get a good angle to kill them. I had to redo this level multiple times just to get it looking decent. The only other water level is too easy to optimize, mostly because it's a bonus stage. :P
Well, enjoy. The game isn't the best, but the levels aren't overly simplistic, there are some nice TAS tricks, and Popeye looks funny.
Oh, yeah, and the screenshot at the top is my suggestion if this gets accepted.

Noxxa: Judging.
Noxxa: The game is somewhat simplistic, but it looks humorously silly, and the viewers like the run well enough. The run looks good enough in quality. Accepting for publication.

This was not very entertaining. Ironic that you tell Kyman that he picked a boring gameboy game, but you pick one as well. Overall there isn't much display of superhuman abilities other than the boss fights which take long into the game to get to. Half the time it just looks like someone who knows the game well is playing. No vote

nitrogenesis you know how much you bring back my childhood I used to watch this show more than playing the game of this and the only thing besides wow was the theme of Popeye The Sailor-man. YES VOTE!

Very run right for justice in some places, but others are interesting. Weak yes. Also noticed at the credits it is a sequel!?

This was a pretty silly game. I like how Popeye shows off a different beefy arm every time he changes direction. Also, he throws spinach cans when he's at full power :-) The game just feels fairly unpolished. Maybe it's just my ROM, but the bosses in Stages 1 and 4 had extra lines of pixels at the top which scrolled down as the boss was defeated (it was a fairly obvious graphics glitch). The music was horrendous in some stages (like 4-2). It's tedious to see all the brick-breaking, even though it does get faster once you have enough power to smash two columns with one punch. It's an alright run, though. I'm going with Meh.
Used to be a frequent submissions commenter. My new computer has had some issues running emulators, so I've been here more sporadically. Still haven't gotten around to actually TASing yet... I was going to improve Kid Dracula for GB. It seems I was beaten to it, though, with a recent awesome run by Hetfield90 and StarvinStruthers. (http://tasvideos.org/2928M.html.) Thanks to goofydylan8 for running Gargoyle's Quest 2 because I mentioned the game! (http://tasvideos.org/2001M.html) Thanks to feos and MESHUGGAH for taking up runs of Duck Tales 2 because of my old signature! Thanks also to Samsara for finishing a Treasure Master run. I noticed it already when I saw "nitrogenesis's GB Popeye 2 in 11:27.92". So yeah, there's probably a Popeye 1 too.
http://www.youtube.com/Noxxa <dwangoAC> This is a TAS (...). Not suitable for all audiences. May cause undesirable side-effects. May contain emulator abuse. Emulator may be abusive. This product contains glitches known to the state of California to cause egg defects. <Masterjun> I'm just a guy arranging bits in a sequence which could potentially amuse other people looking at these bits <adelikat> In Oregon Trail, I sacrificed my own family to save time. In Star trek, I killed helpless comrades in escape pods to save time. Here, I kill my allies to save time. I think I need help.

The first world (as well as the tileset overall) reminded me of Mario Land. Are they from the same publisher? Doesn't look as polished as it could be in a few places. Entertaining enough to watch to the end which gets a yes vote from me every time despite weird graphics.

Yeah, Popeye 1 is a totally different game. It's a maze game where you need to find Swee'Pea and Olive Oyl. Maybe it might make a good run. It was only released in Japan, unlike this international sequel, sort of like the Goonies NES games.

I found it quite entertaining, I'm voting Yes too.
I am old enough to know better, but not enough to do it.

Yes vote because of the arm (the run kept my interest also).

Uh... what's with the freakishly huge arm?? Popeye should go get that checked ASAP.
