Submission Text Full Submission Page
This is my first submission, a run through of adventure mode in SSBM with Captain Falcon. I used Dolphin v3.0 - 705, which is natt's latest a/v sync hack version you can find in the Dolphin forums. I have tested it on other versions and it would not sync correctly.
For some weird reason, SSBM does not sync correctly unless you have the same memory card data. I used a downloaded save from this link: [dead link removed] then import the gci file with Memory Card Manager under the Tools tab
Here are the Dolphin settings:
  • Direct3D9 for Graphics
  • Auto adjust window size on
  • Force 16:9 aspect ratio
  • Progressive Scan on
For enhancements:
  • Internal resolution x2 Native (Although it does work with x1)
  • Scaled EFB Copy on
Hacks:
  • Uncheck Fast Mipmaps, everything else is default.
Advanced:
  • Enable Progressive Scan (still works if unchecked)
  • widescreen hack on (I used this in order to upload HD to youtube, it is not necessary)
DSP LLE should be used in the Audio section
  • in the General Tab, Enable Dual Core and Idle Skipping should both be off.
This runs main goal was to complete Adventure Mode on Very Hard relatively fast without taking any damage. I also wanted to show off combos that are very hard if not impossible to pull off in real time. I wanted to be a little more creative than using the same move over and over again. I varied some moves to make the movie a little more interesting.
Let me know if you have any problems with the movie, because Dolphin is very temperamental and can desync due to the littlest detail. Also, here is the youtube link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9QmBRDxLqrc

I am sorry, but why the use of a save? And it is preyty obvious that there is no verification movie available here, something we do require. I am also not sure how to compare this with other runs. Are you trying for shortest time or maximum entertainment? And claiming that there are no glitches in a game is outright wrong. All games have glitches.

The game does not sync correctly if there is no save file. Also, the youtube video is processing right now, it will done as of now in 2 hours because it is HD. And i guess I should explain the goal a little more, the run is more entertainment than speed, but I still tried to get through it quickly. I didnt mean to say there are no glitches. I'm sure there are, but I did not use them.

So wouldn't it have been a better idea to have simply made the movie with no memory card present?

The game does not sync correctly if there is no save file. ^ I take it that is why. It might be something that changes/messes up otherwise.. Afterall even if some GC TAS's are possible, dolphin is very desyncable as an emulator, not saying that that's a reason he didn't start from power on or anything... Just saying why I can understand the reason for the whole provided save file thing. But yet... You could have just made the run without a memory card present or does it not sync from power on gamerfreak?

Yeah I could have. At first I firgured I would be using an unlockable character, but I ended up using a normal character. So yes, It would have been better to use no save file.

Probably because Dolphin DOESN'T delete save files upon playback. It's very annoying for TASers. :/

Voted no. Definitely not entertaining enough or showing off enough variety or glitches to be accepted as a play around and since you didn't didn't aim for fastest time it can't be accepted as an any%. Also I may just be confused on this but why does the submission say the movie is 10 minutes 21 seconds but the encode has the last input at 10 minutes 32 seconds?

Ok. So it's a "semi"-speedrun?

Big fan of this game. While watching it, I was able to see some unoptimal strats being used. Then I read the submission text. It did clear some things up for me, but I don't like how much you exchanged speed for entertainment. But this is just my opinion. Changing it up in fights is a great thing... but stalling before stage finishes (like all of them?) just looks bad and takes away from the flow of the run. Meh vote for me.

Here's my thoughts: * In the Zelda segment, IMO you should have either killed all the Links or none of them. I recognize fighting one shows off that there are fights, but it felt weird. * Stylistically, having a taunt that gets cut off by the timer running out (in the Zelda fight) seems sloppy. * Getting Kirby to Stone-suicide (in the 15-on-1 fight) was amusing. * In the Grand Prix race, is it at all possible to get hit by the cars when they've nearly all passed, to get knocked further forwards? That might save some time. * Nice work on the Ice Climbers stage! Good dancing, playing around with the enemies, and taking out both Popos simultaneously while leaving the Nanas alive. * Likewise, the Fighting Polygon Team had some good acrobatics and use of items. Low-gravity made for a good change of pace. * It might have been amusing to clear one of the Metal Bros. off the top of the stage. Luring them off the bottom and abusing their terrible recovery is old hat. * I can't speak to the general quality of the actual fighting, not being an SSBM expert. However, it did feel like the knee attack was overused as a finisher. I guess Falcon really only has two non-spike finishers (knee and punch) though. Overall, while I was entertained, I also think that the run could be better. In a TAS everything should go as perfectly as possible, which includes manipulation of level layouts (in the Link level), item drops, enemy AI, etc. The actual fights should try to showcase amusing (or at least different) ways to deal with enemies; try to have as much variety in there as you can manage. Above all, try to surprise the viewer. I don't know what I'm going to vote; I'll need to mull over it some more first. Still, I appreciate the effort that went into this movie; thanks for making it!

It's pretty good, but I think the fights are a bit too repetitive. Most fights can be summed up with either knee+knee+knee or Falcon Punch (or both), and occasionally some other finisher like Raptor Boost or Falcon Dive. It feels like not all of Captain Falcon's moveset is used to full potential. Also, I noticed with some of the multi-battle fights (mostly the Yoshis and Kirbys) that many times you knock away some of the opponents (usually with the knee) but don't actually KO them right away. This looks...bad, to be very honest. In the end, I vote meh. Looks fairly neat, but I think there's more potential to be had out of this game/mode than is presented in this run.
http://www.youtube.com/Noxxa <dwangoAC> This is a TAS (...). Not suitable for all audiences. May cause undesirable side-effects. May contain emulator abuse. Emulator may be abusive. This product contains glitches known to the state of California to cause egg defects. <Masterjun> I'm just a guy arranging bits in a sequence which could potentially amuse other people looking at these bits <adelikat> In Oregon Trail, I sacrificed my own family to save time. In Star trek, I killed helpless comrades in escape pods to save time. Here, I kill my allies to save time. I think I need help.

I second this.

There was a good middle about speed and play-around. But you could have used more different combos. I liked especially Mushroom Kingdom Stage. I decided to vote meh.

Yeah, you remembered what happened with our last Smash Bros. effort. They classified it as a "playround", not a speed run. Voted meh. I think the Author could do better, especially Underground Maze. and 15v1 Kirbys. Some of the gameplay almost plagarized SuperDoodleMan's Action Replay movie.

Voted meh. If a game has speed - entertainment tradeoffs I expect things to be a lot less repetitive. The run felt more like a very good human playing and didn't feature much non-human play. I don't really think things were pushed hard enough and I'd especially liked to have seen more creative uses of items.

your TAS skills are on point. However it`s not the fastest video nor the most entertaining because it lacks creativity. We don`t want to discourage,so please keep on trying.
TAS i'm interested: megaman series: mmbn1 all chips, mmx3 any% psx glitched fighting games with speed goals in general

well, it was worth a try. I will be posting another for 007 Nightfire, which is more suitable as a speedrun

After watching this, I think clearing all 51 events would be more entertaining than an Adventure run. Also, Falcon is a repetitive character.

Starts from a savestate for no good reason, sub-optimal and the sacrifices for entertainment were too extreme and not worth the pay off.
