After the releases of DQMJ series, the original DQM is being forgotten. DQM2 seems to be the most forgotten title in DQM series. But, I love it and had played it for 100 hours in childhood. so I decided to make a decent TAS.

Game objectives

  • Emulator used: VBA-rr-svn421
  • Heavy Manipulation of luck
  • Aims for fastest time
  • Uses death to save time
  • Uses some glitches

Comments

My encode on niconico:
Testrun(no bug, no detailed investigation before making): http://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm17186038
This game has 2 useful glitches for TAS.
  • Cloakroom bug (預かり所バグ); It's fixed in USA version. That's why I chose JPN version.
Where a person is next to a door or a well or a stair, we press A repeatedly in entering. The conversation will start before the map loading. The map ID will change to the next map, but the map itself is same as previous map. So, we can go where we can't go originally.
  • Scrolling bug
Before when we go down and the screen is scrolling, press up and down. then the character's location will slide out the half of the grid and we can go where we can't go originally.

Stage by stage comments

I'm not going to mention the full story(too much to write all), but only the shortcuts and notable things. The glitches are often used to save walking time. in some world, they are also used to cut the scenario.

From start to entering the first world

Nothing. The glitches are used and they save some seconds of the boringsome walking time.

The first world (Desert World, さばくのせかい)

Using Cloakroom bug into well, it's possible to call the mid-boss. 2 events are cut. About 2 minutes are saved from Testrun.

The second world (Sea World, みずのせかい)

We can logically skip all scenario in this world, but then we can't proceed the scenario in the next world. I skipped scenario as possible and take MoonRock(つきのいし) as an additional treasure. ;D CallHelp(なかまをよぶ, {Lv(-1?)}*2*4 damage in TAS) is very useful there and it actually saved much time.
With reducing waste frames to manipulate, I gathered money to buy items in the next world.

The third world (Ice World, こおりのせかい)

Bought items at the shop in Norden(ノールデン). We can't choose another shop, because it's the only shop that sells LogTwig before using. All the event and mid-boss in Norden, Nofor, Goldmines are skipped by the scrolling glitch. The rest are "normal", just walking ridiculous routes to shorten time.

The fourth world (Sky World, てんくうのせかい) and The Last World

Skipping half of the scenarios by scrolling bug and just collect the 3 items which are needed to battle the boss. BigTrip (かんけつせん, damages 0~15% of enemy's MAX HP)saves much time in 3 bosses - NiteRich(ナイトリッチ, HP1500), Mudou (ムドー, HP3000), Darck(ドーク, HP4000).

Ending

hmm, it has some dialogue after Ending credits to see "The END". it makes final input 7 mins longer.

Other comments

Possible improvements

Debug mode can theoretically be called from clorkroom glitch. However, it's sooo hard and the DQM2 debug mode seems quite useless except warp. : Forum/Topics/12882

turska: Judging.

turska: This run is impossible to follow if you haven't played the game and don't know Japanese, which accounts for the vast majority of viewers at TASVideos.
For viewers that haven't played the game and don't know Japanese, the run is filled with long, frequent cutscenes and segments of walking around with occasional impossible-to-follow battles thrown in.
As such, I am rejecting this run for game choice.

turska: Unrejecting under the neo-TASVideos publication system.

turska: Accepting for publication in the Vault.

natt: procesing

It's sad that you weren't able to trigger the debug menu. It would've been quite funny to have another run like the glitched Earthbound TAS. :P

i believe this TAS is more legit than debug, warp and kill the last boss. :p and, yeah, i still need someone who can analysis where the junk data came from and how we aim to a specific value. it's beyond my z80 skill.

I love TAS when it has detailed comment and on-screen explanation, though I couldn't figure out what's going on this time due to my illiteracy in Japanese... Anyway, you did great work on this! It surely deserves publication.

I've been looking forward to a TAS of this game for a long time now. Thanks, and nice work!

:) When we publish the movie on youtube, it's nice to translate them like DQ5 TAS. A bad thing is that we can't use the in-game font for English, because of the length of English words. The entire design would be a bit poor.

I'm glad to hear. :) This game is worth TASing.

I have going to have to remember to watch this in the morning, as this beats a game I thought played WAY too slowly, even with a throttle key, in under an hour.

I think a new TAS of this game (that probably wouldn't get rejected) should somehow trigger the debug menu.

hmm, US version fixes the cloakroom bug, which will technically make minutes longer. That's why I did JP version. anyway, how on earth can a TAS with 100% reputation be rejected? i see the language problem, but it should be better to add this as JP branch at least. This is the fastest in all the versions of the game. I could make US version TAS, but it will be longer with the bug and longer lag (and dialogue :p ).

no way. I had scrolled much with bot, but i'd never come across it again. :( Anyway, it's impossible to call "THE END" from debug. All we can do with debug is a warp near the last boss. We need the flag, which we've beaten Darck.

I can't understand why this didn't make it. Edit : Oh, sorry, tetora_X. I was editing so long that I didn't see your post. So is the reason that the author should have used (U) version?

Wait, you mean if you trigger the credits with the debug menu, there won't be a "the end" screen at the end?

yes, the final event doesn't start without the flag and no "The END…" screen. However, it's confirmed by cheat code. it might be possible, when the bug fills the flag.

turska's primary reason is that the game is just plain boring. Most of the run is just walking around and cutscenes, with only a small amount of the time spent battling, which doesn't really look interesting either. It's just that the Japanese text made the problem even worse.
http://www.youtube.com/Noxxa <dwangoAC> This is a TAS (...). Not suitable for all audiences. May cause undesirable side-effects. May contain emulator abuse. Emulator may be abusive. This product contains glitches known to the state of California to cause egg defects. <Masterjun> I'm just a guy arranging bits in a sequence which could potentially amuse other people looking at these bits <adelikat> In Oregon Trail, I sacrificed my own family to save time. In Star trek, I killed helpless comrades in escape pods to save time. Here, I kill my allies to save time. I think I need help.

Well... what kind of ridiculous things did he expect in a classic RPG TAS? :/ It's just a run-faster, avoiding needless encount, and kill boss asap by critical hits and tricky method. it's same for most of the other non-glitched RPG TASes submitted here.

nice to see unrejected by neo-TASvideos standards. :) As a hardcore fan of DQ, I believe all DQ/DW games should be TAS'd. I'd like to see all versions(EU/JP/US) of all DQ series, though it may be still ridiculous in the new publication system. If USA run is demanded, I'm ready to start it. I'm bored. lol

Congratulations for acceptance! Thanks to incredible uses of glitches and luck manipulations, I think this run equals the most refined TASes.

haha, to be honest, I had seriously thought to make 100%(all dungeons, classes, befriending all monsters) run for DQM1 before, but abandoned in making the chart. 100% run of this game will be much harder than DQM1. it'll take 10 years for me to make. :p
