The trick of going in the pipe to get to the warp zone only works if you first do the trick where you grab the vine and warp to the other side of the screen. I think this would waste more time than it would save.
You don't need the vine to make this work. You just need to get ahead of the place where mario usually stands/runs. You can make it with the blocks at the beginning of the level 4-2. Just use the same trick as in 1-2 where you jumped through the wall to get to the "Minus world". This doens't save any time but it is good to know these tricks.

On October 4, 2002, my old 'puter's motherboard decided to upload itself to the Great Cyberworld in the Sky. :P From then until about December 2003 (I don't remember the exact date), I was without internet access. Out of boredom, I got into NES superplay videos. :) These are the VirtuaNES recs I whipped up during that time. http://www.filespace.org/4matsy/smb1-ng3-w00tness.zip smb1speed.vmv was recorded in VirtuaNES version 0.73; the rest are 0.69. The roms used were Super Mario Bros. 1 PRG 0 and Ninja Ryukenden 3 (Japanese Ninja Gaiden 3). - - - - - ng3j-nohit.vmv is a run through Ninja Ryukenden 3 (much easier Japanese ver. of Ninja Gaiden 3...less damaging/numerous enemies, more power-ups, password system...most of the game's a freakin' cakewalk, even easier than 2, which was easier than 1 o_O). Didn't get hit once. More geared toward artistic fighting than pure speed. I'm especially proud of my Fire Wheel-based PWNing of the bosses, and the fact that I trounced the infamously-time-strained Act 7 with nearly a whole minute still left on the clock. :) - - - - - For Super Mario Bros. 1, PRG 0: smb1points.vmv WAS supposed to be a very quick score-attack of the entire game, but I got too lazy to keep going after world 1. :P Still, I got well over 100k... smb1speed.vmv and smb1speed_old.vmv are speed runs similar to the ones Mike Fried's put up here at Nesvideos. The new version is a bit faster than the old, but starts when I get control of Mario rather than from a system reset. Lots of neat jumping/enemy-stomping patterns in these two. :) - - - - - Enjoy. Thoughts? :)

I'm redoing my Super Mario Bros. speed run, and so far I just finished 1-2 and it's a total of 3 frames faster than the previous version. However, don't think I'm totally crazy and that I'm redoing the whole thing just for a few frames. I want to try out what Player 1 was talking about in 4-2, and if it ends up not saving time I'll stop making the new version.

say, i was just wondering, is the next bug known already? i know smb is ancient history, but i dont think its anything you would notice any time soon.... i didnt see any old smb topics so... whenever you are at stage x-4, playing chess with bowser, you have to jump over him on a switch to kill the bridge and put bowser in his hot tub. i remember that one time, i jumped over bowser, i waited so long that i accidentally timed the jump on the switch and bowser hitting me on the exact same time. so what happened was that i'd get hit (either killed or smaller), and bowser would still be defeated. the glitch here is that in the next level, if you were big, or had a flower before bowser hit you, you would APPEAR small, but would in fact be big or have a flower. any box that would spawn a powerup (mushroom/flower), would spawn a flower. you have to time this pretty precise, but its not very hard to do on the earlier levels... is this thing known? i can hardly believe it would be...

The glitch you described is that you can be small and fiery at the same time when you hit Bowser and the the axe at the same time. It's well-known. However, in the SMB1 timeattack, the only time you meet Bowser is at the game end, so it will not help anything. In a warpless timeattack, you'll never pick mushrooms or flowers (they waste time) so it doesn't apply there either.

Yeah, I've known about this for years. :) Funny variation: If you try this small, you'll get killed, and do the death hop, but you go on to the next level without actually having the life subtracted from your stock, and Toad will appear to be talking to himself. If you can get Mario to fall off to the left (by moving enough to the left right before hitting Bowser and the axe), the death music even plays twice. ROFL :D

Are you still doing this? Tell me if you are not because I want to try if I can find something to improve. Where did you improve 3 frames? Are you using 60fps? I can't figure out any faster way to go to the warp zone in 4-2 than the vine because it is very hard to get ahead of the place where mario usually is if you are small mario. If somebody finds a way to do it under 0.5 sec! with small mario then it can be faster.

I assume that you know how to use .fmv :D It is a very tricky trick. First you have to jump on the Koopa Troopa on the top of the screen when he is falling down off the screen. That is one glitch I am not going to explain to you but I guess you have seen someone taking a mushroom that is falling off the screen by jumping on the top of the screen. So you can touch items that are falling down by jumping on the top of the screen . Then you have to wait the Koopa Troopa to wake up or something and it starts to follow you outside of the screen. You can see his head if you are using 240 patch. Then you have to walk all the way to the end of the level and when the Koopa Troopa is above(or below :D) the flagpole you have to jump on it and you will get over the flagpole. You can see some scores when you jump on it . Sorry my poor English.(I guess I made a lot of grammar mistakes.)

I tried getting a mushroom and using the bricks to push Mario forward, and it was about half a second faster than taking the vine to the warp zone. However, I think doing the vine glitch to get Mario on the right edge of the screen would be even faster, but I haven't tried it yet. Since I'm not really in such a rush to get the video done, I've been lazy for the past few days and I haven't been working on it too much, but I'll get it done eventually. Where did you improve 3 frames? Are you using 60fps? I used the 60 fps hack to end 1-2 slightly better.

Good to hear that you are still working on this. I tried getting a mushroom and using the bricks to push Mario forward, and it was about half a second faster than taking the vine to the warp zone. However, I think doing the vine glitch to get Mario on the right edge of the screen would be even faster, but I haven't tried it yet I've tried this mushroom thing myself one day but I couldn't estimate the time very well and I thought it were slower but I guess I was wrong. I hope that the vine glitch is even faster. What if taking a mushroom is faster? Being Super Mario slows you down in some places right? You can't hurt yourself either because that slows you down too.

Though I haven't tested it yet, I'm pretty sure the vine glitch is faster, though it would be a pitty not to get the mushroom because it looked pretty cool.

Sorry, I'm postponing my new Super Mario Bros. speed run because I'd rather spend time practicing Super Mario Bros. 3. However, it will get done eventually, but probably not for at least a few more weeks.

Good luck with your SMB3 speedrunning.

What's there too look forward to? The only thing that will be different timewise will be doing the glitch in 4-2 and you already know how that works. Everything else will be just about the same.

For some reason I decided to continue my Super Mario Bros. speed run today, and I just finished 4-2, and so far it's a total of 125 frames faster than my previous version!!!

isn't speedrun supposed to be played at once without saving?

You mean timeattack? By my definitions, speed runs and time attacks are the same thing, and can both be used for either legit runs or emulator runs.
