Looks like the patch simply changed the warp zone. It shows the 'Welcome to Warp Zone!' text for a couple frames. Pretty cool hack otherwise I think.

It does that in the original if the pipes scroll completely into view before the screen blanks. Reference: http://youtube.com/watch?v=c-E11TSzCZk Of course, it displays 5 instead of 8.

I don't think so; in her second TAS of it (that was the third I linked to before) the Warp Zone functions as normal, so she must've done something different the third time. EDIT: Even better, 2:01 in this video, upper left quadrant, appears to be an explanation for what's going down. Unfortunately, I can't read Japanese.

I can't either but thanks. Though I did search for the video's title on the japanese youtube equivalent and was pleased to see you can actually tell what's going on when there's movement. I stumbled upon two videos while on youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XBpiSTYo0MM -NES http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F16oE_qAWOA -SNES The first one shows Mario walking into the base of the flagpole and his comments say that he did this by killing a bullet bill. I then found another video showing the same glitch on the all-stars version in the second link. I thought that even though it looks like an inconvenient glitch to pull off, I think it could save time. It appears that right after performing the glitch, Mario is sent backwards off the flagpole and immediately starts walking into the base of it (The left side), and Mario cannot progress any farther. The countdown on the timer begins right as Mario is stopped, which is almost immediately, compared to the current TAS where Mario has to walk to the castle door and then the countdown of the timer begins. I think if there was ever a case where an enemy was very close to the end this could save time, but I also think there could be a way to pull this off without the use of an enemy. If Mario can be forced to the left side of the flagpole after doing the flagpole glitch, I think it will result in a faster time.

Did you watch the latest run? It uses this glitch.

1) andrewg "finds" glitch at 7pm Eastern time (showed youtubes on IRC) 2) klmz submits at 3:30 am Eastern time 3) Movie is published at 5:40 am Eastern time There's the timeline as I know it. That's less than 12 hours from discovery of new technique to publication, which is probably a new world record:)

I was just wondering if someone (and I'm leaning twords Phil and Genisto) is doing a warpless run using these tricks. I would if I had time.

Me and andrewg were working on this over IRC, and it happened. The flag-stuck glitch IS possible on the console, and here is how. This is my 47th (and counting) video. I eventually used re-recordes to get passed pits and what not, but not for this. Re-records stop after the last cannon. Trust me, I was never good at World 8. That's why the re-recordno is so high. I had trouble at the long pit after the pipe. Alot of trouble. Flag-Stuck Glitch: Real-Time

@andrewg: I am sorry that I TASed it at such time. :( @mmbossman: My name is klmz.
<klmz> it reminds me of that people used to keep quoting adelikat's IRC statements in the old good days <adelikat> no doubt <adelikat> klmz, they still do

I'm no TASer by any means though. Awesome strategy to make that glitch work out in 8-2. :) I think eventually I may make a TAS, it might be soon, not sure though.

Yeah, it's "klmz". A good mnemonic device is "klum-zee". Maybe that will help.
A hundred years from now, they will gaze upon my work and marvel at my skills but never know my name. And that will be good enough for me.

I've had a few thoughts to improve this new 4:58 run, but I'm awful at TASing, and so I cannot test my theories. I've been looking thoroughly through each of the 8 levels trying to come up with anything that culd possibliy improve the new TAS I only have two suggestions, and I doubt they would save time, but I think they may be worth looking into. The only levels I think still have possibility for improvement are levels 4-2 and 8-2. Suggestions: 1. Scrolling Mario forward on the screen by jumping at the right corner of any floating block. 2. Scrolling Mario forward on the screen by jumping backwards into any object. (done in my smb speedrun in 4-2) - By getting Mario to scroll farther to the right side of the screen than normal, you would not have to jump through a wall to get the alternate pipe glitch to work in level 4-2. - By getting Mario to scroll farther to the right side of the screen than normal, it may be possible for the bullet bill in level 8-2 to appear earlier as the cannons always shoot towards Mario. Being on the right, the cannons normally may fire earlier as you approach them, but if you were far enough to the right, the same shots would go towards the flagpole instead of the opposite direction. I'm not entirely sure if hitting a block on the left corner does put Mario forward, but it always seemed that way when I accidentally hit coin blocks in an odd manner while slightly slowing down. I'd like to see this TAS go under 4:58, and I'm just throwing my ideas out there, but both methods probably waste too much time to actually save enough time for a faster TAS.

I think if you hit a block at the right place at the right frame it MIGHT save time, but i you do it allot of places you could probably save enough time to beat the 21-frame rule, but like Ilari said on IRC, the 21-frame rule mayy ruin some improvements.

yeah, the 21 frame rules kills a lot of things, although I still think there is a slight chance for improvement.

Hmm, here's a trick I hadn't seen before. http://pl.youtube.com/watch?v=UpgXPt907oI I don't understand it quite yet, but I would suppose it might help the walkathon, gaining this extra platform from an enemy somehow.
You need a platform thing and i guess you need to be a certain distance from it and hit the bullet bill at the same height. check page 15 of the comments if you want to see where i get my hypothesis from.

Sad, sad discovery about the flagpole glitch...... but, before that, I can explain exactly what happenes. First, when falling at full speed, the game checks to see if there is anything under the farthest right pixel of Mario's foot. Therefore, with perfect, perfect, PERFECT timing, you can make it so that the top pixel of the flag-block and the bottom-right pixel of Mario's foot become 1 pixel apart, side by side. Then, on the next frame Mario will appear to be inside the block. Holding left for 2-3 frames and then jumping allows Mario to get pushed inside the block, and jumping allows him to hit the extreme bottom, where no point value was thought possible, ignoring the flag lowering. Now, the discoveries: 1) It is nearly, if not impossible to do it on all levels ending in 2 (except 8-2) due to lack of vertical speed after exiting the pipe, it is not possile to get the right positoning to enter the block, therefore enabling the trick un-useable. 2) Levels with unusual ending staircases also ruin the glitch, due to lack of horizontal spped and positioning. Of course, someone could prove me wrong, and these are just discoveries in the first 3 levels of the warpless improv making. EDIT: Adding something for lazy people upon request of andrewg Well, in order to get the right positioning, you have to make it so that Mario lines himself up in the extreme top-right block (Mario's left foot is above the top-left of the block, vise-versa for the right) and then jump 3 frames. In order to do this, you need to jump from a certain place below, and in order to do that you have to jump from a place below, ect., ect.... It's hard to explain, so watch klmz's run closely at the stairs to fully understand. EDIT AGAIN: HappyLee's proved me wrong >_>

Maybe my published smb2j run can prove you wrong.... Thanks for explaining the positioning.
