So far, I don't see a flaw.
The movie could be stopped once the button is released on the last jump, right? It looks like it would save about .3 seconds. Maybe it was following Twin Galaxies' rules....but it seemed more concerned with the number of frames in the movie.

Don't know if this has been mentionied already but wouldn't it be faster NOT to get 5,000 at every end-of-the-level flag? Jump to the lowest point possible so it wouldn't take as much time as when sliding slowly down from the top of the flag... I'm pretty sure you could time it well too, so you wouldn't get the fanfare & explosions either, saving time...:/

I'm not sure how the flagpole works (maybe it's a set time no matter what), but the movie already avoids explosions, as obvious in level 8-3.

The flag has to reach the bottom no matter where on the pole he lands. No explosions on end of levels have been done since the first attempt on this game. I don't know which time attack you have been watching. I see no obvious ways to cut down time. ?=(

One thing that came up in my mind was in 8-4. At one point you (Michael) jumps over a pipe before entering it. I asked myself why and then I tried it and realized it was a genious move, cus else you would be teleported back instead of getting in the water! This time attack is awesome!!

The flagpole doesn't wait for Mario to come down. It waits for the flag to come down. Thus the landing position of Mario has no effect to the time, and Michael is just getting the highest score there.

Horizontal movement is vital. Mario doesn't move horizontally unless you hold right or left. Michael stopped at exactly the moment when horizontal movement is not required anymore. Actually, there's the friction of movement - Michael _could_ probably have stopped it a few frames earlier, using the cheat that Phil used in Castlevania 3 (stopping the movie about 15 seconds before actual game completion, trusting that I won't move the character after the movie stop has been shown). Doing that might have made the movie file a few frames shorter, but the completion a few frames longer (even having 314 in the time counter).

Michael stopped at exactly the moment when horizontal movement is not required anymore.
I just tested it. The movie can be stopped at frame 18202. Mario still jumps far enough and the timeunits are 315. So, the movie could be 5:03.37, saving 22 frames / .367 seconds.

So what if it can be stopped earlier, you still need to beat the game. The game ends when you lose control of Mario, and you can control him up until the point when he touches the axe and stops moving. I stopped recording at the exact frame when he stopped moving.

Mario touched the axe 3 frames before the movie stop message.

That's because he was still moving for 3 frames after he touched the axe.

I'm pretty sure he was moving up until the point when "movie stop" showed up, but I'll watch it again just to make sure.

This is sort of weird. I was practicing SMB and I ended up in world 0-1. By the looks of it, I'm guessing its the -3 world from the FDS version that Michael described in the SMB FDS topic. I didn't know it was in the US too. There's a drawbridge at the end, but with no Bowser, and no Toad or Princess in the next room. Finishing the level takes you right back to the start screen.

Wow, suprised to see you guys never knew about the minus world before. In 1-2, if you go through the wall correctly to reach the warp zone, you'll got to the minus world. In can be done in a few other places too for slightly different effects. Edit, looks like 4-4 with the underwater bit set.

Ah, it's been a while so I can't recall the exact location, perhaps 4-2 doing the minus world trick? That level is definitly 4-4 with underwater bit set though.
