It was a different level than world -1. I had a game over in world 8, then from the start screen, held A and start button to continue. It took me to that level instead. I can't seem to reproduce this trick. I made a savestate of it if you guys want to try the level. http://members.shaw.ca/richu/SMB.zip

It's a water version of level -3 in the fds version (either that or similar, I don't remember exactly what it looked like). How did you get there? Edit:
perhaps 4-2 doing the minus world trick
I just tried that and it just leads to world 5 as normal.

I don't know exactly how I got there, and I haven't been able to get there since. On the start screen, it just showed 0-1 as the level number instead of 1-1. Then whenever you start the game, it takes you to 0-1. There's probably some warp zone minus world trick that can get you there. There might even be more minus world levels hidden in the game.

Are you talking about the ROM that doesn't show the title graphic for some reason?

Yes, it's a broken ROM, as mentioned several times before. The level bit is simply not set in RAM ahead of time as that SMB ROM was extracted from a pirate cart that probably had a front-end which initialized the RAM correctly. It's actually mentioned in FCEUltra's documentation, oddly enough.

I recently downloaded this, and I noticed a problem. The game NEVER finishes! All 3 times I have watched it, in 8-4, A Beetle (can't think of the "proper" name right now) suddenly turns around without warning at exactly the wrong second, and Kills Mario, and starts the level over. He then dies another 2 or 3 times by falling into the water, and the movie stops when he has 1 life left. At first I thought maybe it was just one of those random bugs or something with the emulator or something else, but it happens every time. But could It possible be something wrong on my end? I've got no patches installed onto Famtasia...do I NEED any to run this .fmv properly? I'm sort of cluless when it comes to all the technical stuff involed in making speedruns, I just watch them for fun. Thanks!

Takarifreak, make sure you have the correct rom! I never had a problem with that file.

Yeah, I though possibly I might have the wrong ROM...but how do I know if I have the "right" or "wrong" one? What's the difference? I am by no means very "informed" about all the techie stuff...pretty much all I know is to get the movies to run! The only difference I know about ROM's is the "version", since often times, besides language, the American version differs from the Japanese, and the European and that kind of stuff. It's the only place it the movie it desyncs though. If I indeed have the "wrong" wrong, wouldn't it happen more than just near the very end?

It says the version next to the movie when you download it. The difference between the rom that you are using and the correct one is that one of them has an extra step(or something similar) ar the very beginning of the stage. Thus, you will always get a desync there.

Ah, I think I understand now! Now, only to FIND the correct ROM! (I know I'm not allowed to ask here, so I won't). Thanks for your help guys. You people here are nice. And talented. I SUCK at video games.

Yeah, YY himself (the movie's author) said that you know if you have the wrong ROM, because Mario gets killed in 8-4. I tried this movie on the wrong ROM intentionally, and got this exact same beetle collision. :) He's got a utility on his site that'll fix bad SMB1 ROMs for ya. I don't have the link though...bookmarks recently got destroyed =P

Wouldn't it be faster to grab the end level flag poles by the bottom every time? That would save quite a bit of time. Then there's the not jumping off to gain faster downward speed, like when going toward the level 4 and 8 warp pipes after falling off the ledge. Though, I'm not 100% on that one. The video here grabs the poles by the top. It's crazy how ingenius things are thought of and then the simple stuff is overlooked.

Either way, we'd have to wait for the flag to finish going down the pole and the music to stop playing, so it wouldn't really save time. 5000 looks more impressive anyway. As for the downward speed, I don't think that would save time. The movie is almost perfect how it is anyway, with the chance to only save a couple frames.

No and no. Even if you jump to the very bottom, the flag still has to slide down. When you jump up to the top, you get extra points and slide down with the flag. And the thing about downward motion is that this way you have too much horizontal velocity. If you press left and right at the same time, mario will do weird stuff and walk backwards, which slows you down a lot. This allows you to quickly turn around on the turns like at the 4 and 8 warp pipes.

I have wondered if it would be possible to save time by using the glitch to go through the wall for the 2-3-4 warp zone. You wouldn't have to spend as much time going backwards since the numbers would appear when you're at the middle pipe. But then I realize it probably needs a mushroom to be done, and that combined with the breaking of the one brick is probably more than enough to be slower.

I'm sure it's faster to just run on the top of the screen. It's been a while, but I think Mario scrolls through the wall too slowly to make the glitch be of any use.

You can run through the wall once you're in it.

And you don't need to break the bricks, even. Just duck-jump into the corner and hope his foot catches on the tile boundary. Still, yeah, I'm 99% sure the mushroom collecting and power-up animation would waste too much time... Might be helpful in a SMB2J run, though. Especially a no-warp run...I already know of at least four time-saving wall/ceiling corners in the castles that could be glitched through (beginnings of 2-4, 7-4, B-4, and C-4). ^_^

I've already thought about both of those tricks and neither one saves time. You need to be running as you turn back to the left so you can do the left+right trick to turn around faster. Anyway, this reminds me, I should probably finish up writing the SMB tricks page sometime. I hope I haven't been keeping people waiting for it. I've been busy playing a lot of Mario Kart 64 recently so I haven't had time.

In the published video of Super Mario 1, in 8-4, after emerging from the second pipe, he jumps over the "goal" pipe to go underwater, kills a flying fish, and goes back towards it. He enters the pipe at time-unit 357 and it starts with 356 after play begins again with the underwater sequence. Now, I know this is a hell of a nit-pick of an absolutely astounding video, but does anyone know why? I noticed it at full speed and I opened up the .fmv to play around with it and ended up going down the pipe at time-unit 359 with just a couple of half-assed tries at full speed. Any thoughts? EDIT: I knew there was an explanation for this one. I didn't wait to see what happened after I went in the pipe - nice little trick. Shows how long it's been since I've actually played the game.

Forgive me for dredging this one up.. but something occured to me last night, that I not only have NOT seen, but I HAVE DONE... mind you not too many a time. Basically in any Bowser level, there IS A WAY that you can jump... and GO OVER the hammer! It's REALLY hard to pull off, but essentially what happens is that you go over, the game stutters a bit and you go into the room with Toad or the Princess. I've pulled this off a few times with my console... and someone was asking me if SMB1 could ever go faster and it hit me. If there was a way this could be done on 8-4, could this not maybe bump it up possibly a few frames faster. I know it's semantics... but depending on how many frames it MIGHT save, it might be able to bump it to like 5:03.9 or something as opposed to 5:04.. Mleh... might not save any frames or cost more.. but the memory hit and I figured I'd toss it out. Mr. Kelly R. Flewin
