Ah, well that's lovely. Thanks for the effort, 4matsy, Bisqwit. I guess this thread can either be locked, left as-is, or stickeyed, in case anyone else hears this rumor.

So who's gonna remove the paragraph from the wikipedia article? We can't let it stay there.

Apparently, that actually DOES work in the Japanese version. (Haven't personally tried it, but I read about it in a Japanese version FAQ by an author that knows Japanese prior to the game's release here and believe that's where the rumor originated from. I believe in a later update the same author said it was taken out of Japanese Blue and in all American versions)

The database is in read-only mode right now, so I can't do it yet. I'll edit it tomorrow to show that the claim is bogus. I'll leave the original "solution" in place for historical value, though. I'll link to the site as well. :)

I read a couple of other hoax pages describing how to get out of that level. One of them said you had to follow a path across certain platforms to finish, as in levels 4-4 and 7-4. Another one was really silly, showing Mario coming up against a Goomba King. XD

I think that guy was either lying or misinformed, because everybody on the GameFAQs message board says that doesn't work. I would check for myself, but I got tired of playing Pokemon a year ago.

Back around 1990 or so FOX aired a series pilot called something like "World's Greatest Mysteries". It had the usual fare - pyramids, face on mars, etc. The real kicker was that it featured the minus one world in SMB. They showed a thirty second clip of somebody getting Mario through the bricks to the warp pipe and into minus one world. "But once you're there, how do you get out?" The announcer asked. "Why, that's yet another of the world's greatest mysteries - and we'll show you how to do it on next week's show!" Unfortunately there were only about 12 people in the whole world watching the show, so it got canned real quick, and there never was a second episode. Apparently the secret was lost with it...

Maybe they already knew the show wouldn't last as they were finishing production, so they threw that line in as a joke.

For that matter, there was a rumor back in the day that there was a second secret level called "The Chocolate Factory". It was popular enough to be mentioned in Jeff Rovin's popular "How to Win at Nintendo Games" series. It should have been pretty obvious that you can't make anything that looks like a chocolate factory out of the characters and sprites in SMB, though the minus world is instantly recognizable. Some people have nothing better to do than convince other people of easter eggs that don't exist, like playing as Luigi or Ninja Mario in Super Mario 64. A rumor isn't "confirmed" until someone proves it, so remember to remain skeptical when something sounds too good to be true.

LOL! It's funny that there's still enough interest in a 20 year old game for people to spread rumors. (I'm trying to imagine what a Chinese world would look like. Maybe the screen is upside down?) In another 20 years, do you think there will be a message board somewhere that goes: "I heard that you could find Yoshi in SMB1 if you beat the game 7 times without using warps and then died in the Minus World as Fiery Luigi. Shigeru Miyamoto really wanted to have Mario ride a dinosaur, but Nintendo didn't think the hardware was ready for it yet, so he used the code they had written for it and turned it into an easter egg. Has anyone heard of this?"

Heh, that is impossible. Even in theory, because SMB scrolling only allows the screen to go left and right :p Hoaxes are funny. :)

I'm guessing that the theory is that it's like 1-2 or 4-2, where you can see Mario's feet running along behind the score until you get to the Warp Zone. Vertical scrolling would just be silly. I like my Yoshi hoax much better.

this is something we mostly did as kids to impress one another. My friend used to tell me that in Donkey Kong Country, everytime you land on the last boss, one of his teeth will fall out. Collect them all and a bird will come to transport you to an island where you will face Banana Man.

It's funny, there are hacked versions of SMB1 that allow the screen to scroll to the left. But anyway... The "Chinese World" being a hoax is obviously nothing new to anybody here, but it is so for an obvious reason if you know how the game handles certain things. The "background" for swimming stages, as I recall, is nothing more than that -- a background of a specific color. When Mario is placed in 'swimming mode', the game restricts his vertical movement, causing him to be unable to move past a certain point on the screen. There is no way to allow him to swim or 'jump' past this point -- many ROM hackers have tried. Consequently, this is why there's no water you can jump into in any of the running stages. But I'm sure most of you already knew this and think I'm just trying to show off some useless knowledge. :P

Chinese World!?! I think it's false because: 1. After hacking at the room 02H, no hole at the top right corner. 2. Last object is 'Scroll Stop' object found in the water part of 8-4 at page 4 3. It's false 4. and the last, it's not true. 5. If it true, there must be a video for proof. Ummm. Watch this one

Huh? I don't get. I think star number not more than 256 because it's just 120, so it may be just 1 bytes or just 256.

Im not sure if anyone knows about this, but there is a warp from 1-2 to 5-2 (as stated in the title.) anywaysi know it wont help in a timeattack, but just in case... the way to do it is the same as going to the minus world, except you need to reach the second pipe before the numbers show up. then the number 5 is displayed above your pipe, and voila. please inform me if this is a well known thing (i didnt see it on gamefaqs). i hope this has some potential help.

Are there any warp pipes in 5-1,2,3 to get you to the last one like in 4-2?

It takes to 5-1, and it's not useful because it's a long way from 5-1 to 8-1. Much longer than from 4-1 to 8-1, because there's a warp zone in 4-2 but not in 5-anything.
