Nach: A run which merely demonstrates an idea is nothing more than an idea. We have a great place for ideas, it's the game resources section.
Just like for a game like Chess, or other classic board games where the only important thing about the game is the move list, here too, nothing about the run is important other than how you made it crash. How long it took is not interesting.
The run itself is also not interesting, nor does the vast majority of the viewers find anything worthwhile in this movie.
Based on not presenting any redeemable quality for a tool-assisted superplay, an arbitrary record no one cares about, and the core of the run which is merely an idea that can suffice as a paragraph in game resources, I am rejecting.

I think you have a typo in your description. Step 2 is on frame 498, while step 3 is on 461. Unless there is some crazy reverse causality going on here, I think one of those numbers might be wrong :) Curious to see an encode.

I strongly dislike this gimmick. Yes, games crash sometimes, we get that. There's no point in showing videos of that, it's not impressive. Do you want a picture of the BSOD I got last month?

Perhaps these crashing demos should be submitted to a forum thread, and then have someone make a YouTube montage of them all. That might be cool to see. But I don't really see the point in putting these into the submission queue. It's just, what's next? Runs for "Fastest Game Over"? or "Fastest Enemy Kill"? "Fastest Item Acquisition"? I don't really get it.

While having some kind of "fastest crash" or similar category might be interesting and entertaining to some degree, it would probably get old really quick. As such, I doubt it has a place on this site. That being said, I'd still be interested in seeing an encode.

While I see some value in demonstrating a screen freeze glitch, what value is there in getting to this point as fast as possible?

What would take even less time is to just show the freeze glitch. What I'm getting at is that the value of this run is in the glitch, which is easily demonstrated as a glitch video on youtube. There's no value in the sequence of input that gets there. I don't see the point of this as a TAS. Maybe the glitch should be done in a video and linked on the Game Resources page

I think we need a once-and-for-all decision for the "fastest crash" or "fastest softlock" goal. I would say It doesn't beat the game -> it doesn't qualify for Vault, Moon, Star -> it must be rejected. However, these bugs might be used in a Playaround. And I also think it can be added to the game resource page.

I don't agree with these Softlock speedruns. Beat the game, or do the impossible. Making the devs feel bad because you crashed their game, is not that impressive to me.

For me, the value is identical to ending the game: - You want to get the machine to a specific state as fast as possible. - There are a lot of ways to reach that state. - You need to exploit bugs not intended by the designers. - The fastest method to reach that state is a NP-problem. I understand why it feels like a pointless exercise for most though. After all, players want to avoid playthrough-stopper bugs at all costs under normal circumstances. However, I think people are just not open-minded enough to truly appreciate this type of art, which is unfortunate. I will hold my vote until I can watch this submission.

It seems to me that this category is bloody pointless. It is so random that it might as well be replaced with fastest death, fastest way to beat the game with cheats, fastest way to beat the first boss. While quite a few goals are arbitrary, few are as random as this. For myself and others, it is not baseless hate or anything of the like. I agree with the idea of the Vault, holding all the games regardless of entertainment. I agree of the demo vault (if it gets made), holding anything that is very impressive like high quality free runs. This isn't impressive as a goal and it doesn't show anything but the fastest glitch one can find. To SmahManiac, the issue is that any goal can be made to have the same terms used to defend it. The importance of the goal is what is in question here. The goal isn't impressive and rarely shows anything impressive about the game. Mind, I agree that you can find it interesting, hell I thought the WW softest lock was cool to watch. I just disagree with the idea that it should be recorded in this site in a professional degree.

I can fastlock any game in realtime with a big enough hammer.... Actually should de add a "tilt cartrige" option in bizhawk ? The concept of gamelock is too wide to be "judgeable" for exemple in the wind waker run, The game is not "freeze locked " but in a "don't know what code to run" locked... It's not the same console state. The concept might be fun if unexpted but alone is not enough to deserve its own category...

The way I see it, crashing or softlock or game over runs simply have the goal of ending the player's adventure as quickly as possible. I don't think it's that arbitrary. Like a normal TAS or a speedrun, except geared towards failure instead of victory.

The only reason I haven't voted no is because I haven't seen an encode and I think on general principle I should watch something before I vote. I just can't possibly imagine there will be anything worth publishing here.

Yeah, the programmers must have been really careless making this one... I know pressing opposite directions is widely accepted here, but when it introduces new glitches into the game that wouldn't otherwise exist its just stupid IMO--this should be viewed as a hardware limitation, i.e. something where emulation is going beyond what the system actually allows.
