Since the meaning of Stars, Recommended and Newbie-attention has been mixed together and pulled apart several times over, and there was the decision to make SOME flag that would mark runs for newcomers to check out first and get the idea of TASing, we need to name that flag somehow and to give it an icon. That flag would list only a few runs that are of the best known games that have the most impressive tricks (still not glitched to death). This would help to separate Newbie-rec and Star categories and avoid excluding too similar but still star-worthy runs from star tier (which is an untier yet). About icon, my proposition was these 2 things, that are actually small enough, and have the meaning "this run will charge and blow your mind". I like the left one more. People also suggested this info box from Super Mario World, but I find it too indefinite. Please suggest more icons and a name for this flag. EDIT: the approxiomate list of others' suggestions for that flag http://pastebin.com/yzAaaciW.

A good name would be "Mindblown", but I don't know. I think there are better names.

I think the word "showcase" would work well for these movies.

Note that we must distinguish the flag from the Stars tier, which for now matches both words you suggest :D

Uhm, what are the icons supposed to represent?

The sense of TASing from the newbie's perspective.

I don't think that name would convey the purpose of the symbol. It's also too pretentious IMO. Something more neutral and descriptive would be better.

I second that. To me, these icons look nothing like what those are supposed to represent (in fact, I can't even make out what kind of thing that is)...

I think the symbol should be the mushroom from SMW. It would stick with theme created with the Star and the Moon icons being sprites or (because I haven't actually checked if they are the exact sprite) pretty damn close to the sprite from the game. Additionally it would work as a "New User" icon as for many people who grew up with a Nintendo console as their first introduction to gaming there is a very good chance that a Mario game Mushroom was the first power-up item they ever got in a game.

Here it is: . But I don't quite like it. Ilari: if the question was, what MY icons mean, it was the electrick charge sprite from SM. EDIT: adelikat's suggestion:

How about an icon containing an exclamation mark?

I agree with Warp. This saw this as an icon in my head: A Navi icon might also work?

Oh please no, I will have navi's voice in my head for a long time Hey Listen! Honestly I'm joking that would be good.

With the help of the Navi suggestion and the idea of "tutorial" in mind, I think about Kaepora Gaebora. Link's Awakening version: This needs color maybe.

Actually!!! I can't understand why we forgot the most obvious one: The legend: 1. What does the newcomer do when he arrives? He lurks around. He is interested. He has questions: "Where am I? What is this place?" So the icon represents that he must follow somewhere with those questions, to find the fair answers. "Interested? Bump me!" 2. First time you launch SMB you don't know what is inside those question boxes. Each one can be a surprise. And even when you play for quite some time, but haven't discover ALL yet, you still don't know what is inside the box. So when you arrive at TASVideos for the first time, the icon is hinting about the site content: "Looks familiar, huh? You have NO IDEA of what you're gonna see!" PS: This icon HAS to be animated (mine is of 8 frames, we still can get rid of a few more in the first half), to attract the full attention it can and to look REALLY awesome.

I like that a lot more than any other suggestion so far! Bizhawk's "Unknown ROM" icon is this, though it isn't animated. I don't know if that would cause confusion (not to a true newbie since they may not have even used an emulator) If it is going to be a question block, I expect it would give me answers. As such it should link to a wiki page, not a pure movie listing. This page would of course have the movie listing but also a lot of information. Maybe it should use the recommended movies as answers. Like "Often games manipulate luck, as as in this game xxxxx, not the author xxxxxxx" and then it shows the movie module.
It's hard to look this good. My TAS projects

I'd want it to be a page with 2 tabs. The first is called "See" (with the newbie-rec module) and the second is something like "Explore" (with all kinds of info the newcomer may need).

The page is going to surprise you. Its content is pretty audacious. But I will assure you guys, what I put there is EXACTLY what casual gamers need to know first about TASing. I was conversing with tons of them on that matter, showing them different TASes and explaining the SENSE. Most of them always wonder: Why at all? Why not just play the damn game? Why rape it? It's not raping. It's improving the idea we used to have about these games. http://tasvideos.org/Feos/NewcomerCorner.html

I'm not sure I agree with this style of writing: "Now, we are not going to lie to you, the casual visitor, we have to use speciffic tools for what we do." It makes it sound like there's something objectionable and shameful in that. It sounds like "yes, it's nasty and hideous, but nevertheless we have to do it to achieve our goals."

After the newcomer actually READS the rest, he understands it was a joke. Because this thought comes into nearly every head that first sees a TAS, thinking it is real time, then discovers it was played with savestates and gets disappointed. They are disappointed simply because they have NO IDEA of what actually TASing is. And I instantly explain that, no cuts. My point was to prevent ANY disappointment: IT'S NOT REAL-TIME. But in a personal style of speaking, I HATE bureaucracy!

The page was reworded/fixed, moved toplevel and linked to from the [?] icon. Wiki: NewcomerCorner

For the record, I still oppose the wording I mentioned earlier. I think the joke is too tenuous, too easy to misinterpret, and not all that funny even if you get it.

So nothing at all from that post is sane for you?
