I like what you've done, but a couple of questions. 1. Is it possible to get the Laser Eye to actually hit one of the enemies? If so, it would be fun to see it at least once, and if it only happens very rarely, then having it hit each time could be cool. 2. Is it possible to keep/get someone else instead of Gort? His advanced attack animation seems unnecessarily long. I'm going to assume that the answer to both is a no, but I figure it wouldn't hurt to ask.

1. Laser Eye has a countdown and fires every 8(?) turns every creature it sees. 2. That depends on how large the Force has to be in each battle, giving enemies no more turns that is necessary. I wouldn't worry about early promotions of Max if he can gain strength boosts in level ups. DarkKobold has been amazingly fast, soon it's already Kane-time. And he's no bird-food, if you know what I mean ;)

Well, I was pretty sure it wouldn't happen. =P Anyway, I'm really interested in seeing this finished. When I first played this game myself, I don't recall getting past even the first mission (I don't know, they always killed me somehow). I knew this was worth watching though from the moment I saw how that villager was used as a block to get out of the first city early. And who knows, maybe a SF2 run will be made and I'll get to see what happens after the chess battle.

The latest WIP posted desyncs right before Max can leave the first town. Anyone else having this problem? And yes, I made sure all the previous data was deleted.

Are you sure it desyncs (is this the first WIP of the run you watched)? The first time I watched it I was sure something was wrong as well. The latest WIP desynced for me in that water battle with the white gargoyle-looking thing as the supposed boss monster, after leaving the mermaid town.

Shallow: Earlier WIPs worked? I played with Gens_movie_test_9c. Try other ROM-version (universal).

Yes, I watched the earlier WIPs with the same ROM and same GENs version. I suppose I'll have to try the one you suggested. Either way, this is good info for others who may have synching troubles in the future. EDIT: Er, actually, I can't seem to find the version of Gens you listed. Would you mind linking please?

Try deleting any save ram that may have been created - I had that problem.

The version of Gens is not the issue. Find "Shining Force (U) [!].srm" and delete it. It will be in the directory listed in options->directories->"SRAM Backup" in Gens. (.\ means your gens directory). Also, for some reason gens doesn't reload the srm when you reset. So if you start watching the WIP, and you restart in the middle of watching it will desync. I'll fix this for next version, but in the mean time, you can work around this by closing the rom and reopening it when you wish to restart the movie.

I mentioned in my first post that I made sure all previous data was deleted. Though to be honest, I found it weird that with this game I had to manually delete the save file while most others usually over-write it manually. But yea, the movie was desyncing even after I deleted the save files. EDIT: And now, just to make me look like a fool, it begins working for me. It figures, but hey, as long as it works, right?

Any game on the genesis that saves SRAM you have to make sure that the SRAM is blank for it to sync right. Which means finding the .srm, deleting it, then opening the game and closing it again to get a fresh one.

Hm, when I think about it now, I suppose it's because I haven't watched any other Gens videos that saved data automatically like Shining Force; that's why the problem seemed so weird to me. Anyways, it's time to make these posts of mine useful... So I noticed in these movies that you hold down several movies almost constantly during battles, and others at different times, including the Mode button. Is this part of the manipulation?

No, it's actually a bug in autohold -- he has the controller in 3 button mode, which means none of the XYZM presses can affect the game, and pressing them shouldn't even be possible, but autohold and autofire don't check for 6 buttons before doing stuff, and doesn't clear them properly if the controller is in 3 button mode. This is not a high priority fix because the only thing it affects is the input display.

You have to remove the srm before playing the movie, I got caught a couple of time with this, like playing the movie, or opening the rom, Oh it desync, suppress the files, and playback, it desync again. Just be sure to delete it before loading the rom and it should be nice.

Bump, I know you said you wouldn't have time to work on this for a couple of time, but do you have an estimated date that you'll work back at this ?

Actually, I got a little done on my vacation. 2 beautiful battles if I do say so myself. Unfortunately, I'm also very angry, because I completely need to re-do the Kane (Cain) battle. I need some advice as well. Bleu sucks hardcore, for a flying player. His attack is great, but his move is only 5 (!!!! F-Bomb !!!!) and his agility is 8, which makes him impossible to manipulate in the battle order. I'm thinking he needs to die, and soon. Also, Pelle promoted, equipped with the Halberd, boosted with the power ring, is the only one capable of taking on Kane in one shot. This is easily on the path to the fight. The question is, is it time to promote everyone? I know I may have to hold off on Amon or Balb, since the broad sword is available, but only 1. (I could buy a steel sword, but it is weak) Additionally, the Valkyrie (Strong Knight weapon) is also coming soon, making buying the chrome lance a time wasting proposition. Too much to think about!!!!

Well if Bleu suck, then you can't rely on him thus making Amon and Balbaroy very important. Buying weapon is not a concern, unless you can't take an enemy with a double hit. Are there any battle that requires the two bird until you can promote one and give him a better sword ? For promotion, I don't know what are the consequence of promoting early or late, and you'll lose time if you split the promoting in two parts. I would say (if time wasn't a concern) to promote only those that could be upgrade with a better weapon doing more damage (if they can't take enemies in one turn.)

Actually, it's funny you mention that. Next battle is the battle I've been dreading the most, since I started the TAS. It is AWFUL. At this point, I have no idea how to tackle it, since The enemies are spread, in mountains, and are very difficult to take down, even for my birds. The knights will be extremely usesless, as are max and Gort. Take a look at it on GameFAQs.

The other problem is the drop in agility. Everyone takes a hit of 4 or 5. If they all take it at once, it is easier to keep them together in the battle order. If they are all over the map, then the cursor is more likely to have to play jumping jacks for 1 or more fights, until everyone can level once or more. Sorry, forgot this: http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/9828213/Shining%20Force%20%28U%29%20%5B%21%5D.gmv The reason the 2 most recent battles are amazing (to me) Battle 17: 4 shellfish appear as soon as the bottom 4 conchs move. Strangely, they never appear :). (Seriously, however, getting the conchs to never move was a horrendous pain in the ass. That is why there is some standing around) Battle 18: 2 Ice Worms, 1 Master Mage, and 5 Golems should appear on this map.... I'll let you see what happens.

Great! This is what I have been waiting most. My non-serious attempt took 5:25 (I suck at luck manipulation) but we'll see if you can go under 3 hours. It will be a hell of a work but best luck and hopefully you have lots of free time :D Waiting to see Sword of Light's "Bolt 2 madness" :o~ Oh, and save state after each chapter would be a nice service. edit: You managed to escape town earlier. I wondered in your first try if that was done half-heartedly...
Do you still have your old run? Do you happen to know if magic damage can critical? I wish I could post save states, but I've got nowhere to post them.

DarkKobold, you can create a google webpage, there's 100megs of storage there. in the first battle of chapter 6, I didn't see what you gave to max, but if it's a ring, isn't it faster to equip him just before a battle ? Also wouldn't it be fast to group people together and move them ? I don't know how faster is the cursor, but it might be faster to move the group toward the battle. Wouldn't it be faster to exchange item in the menu before the battle, because you seems to stay still and lose turn.

The run desynced for me at the Kain/Cain battle on Bleu's 2nd or 3rd turn.

Yeah, it desyncs/stops. I forgot to stop the recording before I started messing around in the Kane battle. Additionally, if it didn't Desync, it would have ended with Balbory hitting Kane for 50 damage... not enough to kill him.
