I've decided to try and tackle SF1. I've made a small video of the first fight, I do a decent job of luck manipulation... However, I need to use the tools that Aclmm used when creating his Dragon Warrior video, to be even partially effective. I end up dying at the end of this video, it is just a demonstration of what can be done. It looks like it desyncs in the town with my crazy walk, there is a purpose to it. It actually ends when I die. I can't seem to get the computer to miss, with any consistancy. Hopefully when Jyzero comes out with the frame advance one, and hopefully fixes the debug mode crash, I can create a real one. I just wanted to show what is possible. Oh, I almost forgot, you must not have an SRM file for the Shining Force rom before you load the movie. Back this file up, i.e. move it or rename it. The movie can't play unless this file is created anew.

I tried to start too, but after trying to watch my recording, I soon realised it isn't possible to do an optimal gmv-file. And the reason is that the turn order changes sometimes and can screw your moves after that. This far I have knowledge only in the first battle, so making an avi-video could require only some retries to get correct turn order. Here's my try of first three battles(23mins): http://www.freewebs.com/suklaalevy/files/sf1.rar Optimal play is over one minute faster, but it doesn't work. The ROM is same as DarkKobold used.

Make sure you aren't using a 6 button controller configuration. It tends to cause desyncs like that.

I've advanced to the end of chapter three. By far it has taken 1h36m and it seems whole game will take over 4 hours. This first run is not meant to be played as fast as possible, but to see what it will take in future. Third chapter's second battle was slowest of all battles, so if anyone could give some advice, I would appreciate that. The gmv-file is updated in the link I posted earlier.

Well, I haven't got time to watch it at the moment, but I know what you're talking about. You'll have to 'abuse' Amon and Balbaroy's flying abilities and kill the Lizardman next to the bridge, which I think will end the battle. You'll also need them to fly over and kill the right-most Silver Knight in the Laser Eye battle, unless of course you already have.

Sorry but I thought victory conditions in that map were: 1. Kill all enemies 2. Bring Max to the bridge

ARISE! Old topic of long forgotteness! I recently got to playing through the GBA version of this game and started to think that it would be pretty cool to see/do a TAS of this...but I would like to get some opinions. Which of the 2 versions would be better to do? I think the GBA one because the text can be fast-forwarded through, the guy SPRINTS much faster and the game in a whole just seems to run faster... Anyways....so which one?

Do a test run of *just* the first battle of both, and pick whichever one you like more. Battle speed is one consideration, but if luck is easier to manipulate in one, it makes the process go a lot easier.

Well...being the cheater that I am...I kinda do that anyways, and the luck thing seems to have little/no randomness in the GBA. Example: Hero attacks monster from the 4 different sides, each time it is the same outcome, reguardless of button pressing, moving or things like that. The only thing that seems to be manipulateable (is that even a word?) is how the enemy moves. But then again, I haven't tested EVERYTHING. Maybe pulling up a menu screen or something might work...... It would be nice to figure out the critical hits though....

I did a little research on this game recently; I would suggest you do the Mega Drive version. Although the GBA remake has faster running and stuff, it also has additional cutscenes. And besides which, it is a pain to luck-manipulate. On the MD you can manipulate just by moving the cursor before pressing A to attack, on the GBA you have to equip and de-equip an item or something. Or at least, 'threaten' to. Also, the word is 'manipulable', not manipulateable :p

It's a biggie, that for sure! I really won't be able to do much on this for about a week or so due to some weird work issues, but I am already looking into a few things already. One thing that I've noticed in both, the RNG only cycles once per manipulation. That is in the GBA one, pulling the menu up 3 times will produce 3 different results...but is that based on the time it's up? For the Genesis, is that the same, except I don't have to go into a menu to cycle it? Also, I think some things might not be manipulatable - like I was in a battle and I had a character do 2 damage, and would never do any more than that, no matter how many times the menu was pulled up!
