Thanks to Michael Fried's idea, we now have a SMB2j submission that completes the game 22 frames faster than the previous version.
It would actually be ~30 frames faster if the game didn't have the Censorship Of Great Deeds principle, which basically means that the completion times of all scenes are rounded up to the next 21 frame granularity (same as in SMB1).
It also has a slightly lower final score and less coins than the previous version (how's that an improvement?). It stomps some enemies that it didn't stomp the previous time.
Unfortunately I still wasn't able to Force the piranha plants out from my way, so I had to wait in the usual spots.
The completion time is 08:21.43
The completion time of the previous version was 08:21.79
Hey, at least it rounds towards 21 instead of 22 now :)

I created this movie by rerecording the previous version -- starting from the second part of level 1-2 (without discarding the rest of the movie) and then replaying miscellaneous scenes from all levels, beginning with the ones that desynced because of changed monster locations (mostly bullets).
About 30% of this movie is identical to the previous version.
I think I'm starting to be somewhat experienced in editing of the movie files. Note that this does not conflict with the spirit of this site - the games are not modified. I wouldn't mind even if the entire movie (still talking about the keypad input) is computer generated. Actually, that could be exciting to see :)

Submission file updated: Now includes a little more interesting playing in the 1-2 level. This increased the rerecord count by 193 (reflected by the submission header).

Since FCEU has better sound (and, IMHO, looks nicer), why not use it? Is it just because of the slower FDS access?

Because I am not yet familiar with making movies with FCEU. (And that might be because the Linux port of FCEU is underdeveloped.) Admittedly this is a marketing trick as well: A FCEU movie would be more than two seconds slower because of the differences in disk access. And I don't like to make it difficult to compare the timing to the previous version.

You could use the Win port of FCEU in Linux the same way you use Famtasia you know.

Great idea with the nesmock, it's just that I don't know how to use it. Couldn't you (anyone) make a exe file out of it so you only need to open it via DOS or something? Great movie! (I can see it now due to the fceu version)

There already is one. Take the -win32 zip. Though, I need to build one for the most recent version too. Edit: It's there now.

Thanks. But beware that nesmock isn't a magical solution - for example, Kopernical's Mega Man 3 movie seems to be nearly impossible to convert automatically. The jumps just don't reach/time correctly without essentially replaying it completely :-/

I remember the second quest in this game being very different than the first. Strangely themed levels. An entire level underwater, castle and everything. One of Bowser's castles being open air. That kind of stuff.

That's a run I would like to see! Reason for this is from what I remember the A-D levels are insanely hard. I really enjoyed the run that is up now because I know how hard this game is compared to SMB 1.

Phil is already working on that. It will be done with the SNES version, because rumour says the NES version requires some crazy time wasting deeds (like completing the game 8 times in row) until those bonus levels are unlocked.

*nods* That's what the info page for the game at TMK says:
Each time you beat World 8-4, the game will add a star to the SMB logo on the title screen. When you have eight stars, at the title screen hold A and press Start. You will be whisked away to World A-1. (You can accumulate a maximum of 24 stars, but only eight is needed to unlock Worlds A - D.)
And yes, It seems to be less tiresome in the SNES version:
To access World 9, you must get to World 8-4 without warping. Beat Bowser, and you'll go to World 9-1 with one life in reserve. If you beat 9-4, you'll start back at 9-1 (in Super Mario All-Stars' Lost Levels, after 9-4 you'll go to A-1).

I mentioned in some earlier post that SMB2j writes into its own diskette (image), and that FCEU doesn't load/save this data along with the movie. I'm glad to hear your method worked.

I can't see this movie, but I voted Yes. Bacause, I saw your old-version. This movie faster than old. When I was kid , I played this game, and it was very difficult game for me. I think it is more difficult than SMB1, so, I feel you are great!

In the part of 1-2 where you go on the ceiling, would it be possible not to go up there and just do some lip jumps on the pipes?
