Post subject: Idea: Submittor Commentaries with the Movie

Hi all. Something I thought may be interesting is to include submitter commentaries as a seperate SRT (subtitle file) with the AVI's. The commentaries could explain unusual glitches when used or boss strategies or particularly impressive parts of the game. Some may wish to criticize parts of their work and suggest future improvements. The commentaries can be downloaded seperately as a .SRT file or included with the initial AVI publishing though the logistics of that seem tough. I think that being able to download the SRT at a later time which would be available from the 'submitter comments' page would be sufficient as the submitter doesnt necessarily know how long the AVI file will be to begin with. I dont know how many people would be interested in adding a 'director's commentary' to their works or what utilities there are to help write SRT files (the format is a simple text file) but I think after many hours of perfecting a run some runners would like to create the file. What do you think? -Ast

Has been discussed somewhat before: http://tasvideos.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=319&start=75 But then only as encoded in the AVI, not as a standalone file.

If it's encoded directly to the AVI, one cannot decide not to use them. Since the usual subtitle formats (srt) are small, there could be a possibility for the author to add the subtitle file once his/her run is approved of and published. Then again, is this really necessary? I think authors can convey those points with the submission text.

The same information can be present in both but I thought it could make some of the longer ones more interesting to watch. Commentaries could include very specific issues that would be too difficult to address in the comments. I saw that the other thread addressed this using a subtitle file for the emulator but doing it in an SRT has the advantage of being able to turn it off and being able to add it after it is already published, and adding it to those already published. -Ast

Since the wiki-style version of my site was published in June, there has existed a possibility to include separate subtitle files along with the movie. However there's no way to submit them or to enter them to the movie entry, aside from manual passing of files and direct database manipulation. Think of it as an undocumented feature which nobody has taken advantage of yet.
