This is a 3 minutes improvement on the current run. It was played on easy to reduce lag and also to shorten some boss battles. Some new tricks were found, as i redid the run. I am hoping this will obsolete the currently published movie and also find a way out of the vault.

Game objectives

  • Emulator used: BizHawk 1.6.0
  • Aims for fastest time.
  • Takes damage to save time
  • Manipulates luck
  • Death as shortcut
  • Difficulty: Easy
  • 2 Player mode

New Tricks

I had found out, a while back, that you can maintain your speed, by pressing right on one frame then left on the next. This can only be done on the ground so jumping cancels the trick. Another thing i found, while fooling around, is entering walls. This is done only with the safari suit. When you get close enough to it, jump towards the wall. Then go down then jump again continuously. Once you are in the floor, you can go right pretty easily. If, on the other hand, you want to go up, for a long distance, you are better to use the western outfit. When dashing in the wall, you will go straight up if pressing the opposite direction.

Haunted Circus.

Stage 1-1

Spawning the second player, at the beginning of the stage, saves a good amount of time, since she will appear in the middle of the screen. All the lag caused by sprites, in this level, was reduced, thanks to easy mode. The boss has half the hp so 3 2xhits instead of 6.

Stage 1-2

I changed outfits as soon as i got the sweeper, to avoid jumping over enemies. This allows me to keep speed momentum. It also allowed grabbing blocks for the boss battle. Playing on easy means no more waiting for the swinging bars, as blocks are placed to prevent falling. The boss was hit sooner than the previous run, thanks to the blocks. It also gives more damage than a jump hit. On easy mode, he dies in 4 2xhits and on hard, he dies in 6.

The Jungle.

Stage 2-1

At the beginning of this stage, we receive the safari outfit. Since i had already changed to no suit, the dressing animation was skipped. The rest of this stage is improved with maintaining speed and the zipping through the tree. My favorite boss of all "sigh", the turtle... He has 6 life points, instead of 8 on hard. He can only be hit by 1 player and is pretty hard to manipulate. I managed to make him pop out on the side that i want... Let's just say, he is the main reason i switched to easy.

Stage 2-2

In the first section of this stage, the middle screen spawn is useless, since you need to use the first downhill to reach max speed.Minnie takes the lead, since she reaches full walking speed before the hill. At the top of the tree, an improvement was found. It turns out that taking damage to jump on the spikes (while invincible), is faster than climbing up the branch. The second section was done with one player to avoid the wait and finally the last section was greatly improved, by avoiding most gushers. The damage i take, at the end of the stage, is purely for entertainment, (for all you mouse torturing freaks) as i do this ONLY to manipulate the next boss battle. The boss Has a small improvement also, aside from taking 4 hits instead of 6. I managed to hit him sooner and not take damage. I can't say, how many frames i shaved. My first run was on snes9x 1.43 and i don't think the times are the same.

The Haunted House.

Stage 3-1

Managed to add one more dash at the start of the level and killed a player to reduce lag. The first portrait needs 3 hits, instead of 6 on hard.

Stage 3-2

The first two sections were barely changed, except for better coordination and of course maintaining maximum speed. The ghost is killed in 3 hits and would be killed in 4, if i would use only cork shots. In my previous run (hard mode), he was killed in 5 2x cork shots.

The Caves.

Stage 4-1

No more suit swapping, to get through the blocks, in the scrolling part, as dying is much more effective. I tried zipping in the ground, instead of going downhill but i never got faster than simply running down. Having a player spawn, in the next section helps the spike to fall faster. You would usually use the "hookswing" if that is a word witch i think it is not. The boss? Well... Spoiler alert!!! There is no boss! I skipped him by zipping through the wall that leads behind him. So... Yeah! A little improvement here.

Stage 4-2

Second player will slow you down here and the respawn in the next section will save a-bit of time. The zipping, at the end, shaves a little more than a second. The boss is much faster, on easy. Only two hits and he is done. I could have started the battle later, to have him bring out his head low, but he would have then started walking. This way he comes out twice in a row.

Frozen Plains...

Other comments

I should do a stage by stage comment soon enough and also, sorry for having no encode for this. I am basically sending this from a microwave... and start.

solarplex: Added temp encode module.
feos: Accepting for Vault Moons as an improvement.
Fog: Processing...

Something I just noticed. Submission 1485 aka Movie 874: "Difficulty: Hard" Submission 4323: "This is a 3 minutes improvement on the current run. Difficulty: Easy" Oops, thanks Moth. Anyways I'll just a question now seeing how I missed something like a derp. Now I'm noting you're doing it to remove lag... so doesn't this contradict the using hardest difficulty? *reads difficulty stuff* Hmm this game seems to have the same amount of levels no matter the difficulty and same length... So this gets the River City Ransom pass I guess. I need to finish watching the run but so far I'm most likely giving it a yes.

The Hard Mode rule can be bypassed if difficulty only means a higher repetition of the same pattern,we should ask the author about it.
TAS i'm interested: Megaman series, specially the RPGs! Where is the mmbn1 all chips TAS we deserve? Where is the Command Mission TAS? i'm slowly moving away from TASing fighting games for speed, maybe it's time to start finding some entertainment value in TASing.

There is some precedent for working with an easier difficulty level. The most relevant case I can think of is arukAdo's run of Kaze Kiri: Ninja Action. (Spikestuff, I'm not sure if the RCR run is on hardest difficulty...) Another case, which probably is less relevant, is Duke Nukem 64. Another point to consider is that this game has much less resource management in the way that Magical Quest does. You don't have a limited magic meter or firehose meter to manage for boss fights here... the cowboy suit does have limited use of cork shots, but that doesn't really change the strategies at all, it seems. As for the run itself, good job! I was pretty amused by the stuttered look of the new momentum-preserving trick; that really makes a big difference in some places. The occasional zipping spices up the run too. Lag management is great, and you had some clever uses of death. I just need to know: did you figure out how to manipulate that damn turtle miniboss? He's by far the most boring part of the previous run, and he seems more efficient this time, but there are still some wasted actions from him.
Used to be a frequent submissions commenter. My new computer has had some issues running emulators, so I've been here more sporadically. Still haven't gotten around to actually TASing yet... I was going to improve Kid Dracula for GB. It seems I was beaten to it, though, with a recent awesome run by Hetfield90 and StarvinStruthers. (http://tasvideos.org/2928M.html.) Thanks to goofydylan8 for running Gargoyle's Quest 2 because I mentioned the game! (http://tasvideos.org/2001M.html) Thanks to feos and MESHUGGAH for taking up runs of Duck Tales 2 because of my old signature! Thanks also to Samsara for finishing a Treasure Master run. From the submission comments:

Welcome back with great surprise TAS jaysmad! In the previous run you used hardest difficult, why you use easiest on this run? (only for curiosity). Deserves a moon tier by effort to control 2 players and some good features

How much of the improvement was because of easier difficulty and how much due to optimization?

At least the zipping tricks are faster, isn't taht enough?:

Liked the run! The zipping was nice, and cutting down the difficulty if it's JUST repetition doesn't bother me. I haven't been following this at all, either, and don't know the game, but watching the run, I got a couple of ideas (that you might have already tried, just guessing here) to maybe cut some time. There was a long underwater section little over halfway through that was nothing but laaaaaag the whole way. Would it have eased the lag by leaving one of the mice dead the whole time, or would it not be enough to cover any improvements having both alive would bring? Also, from the looks of it, are you doing double damage by having both mice bounce on the boss's head at the same time? Would it be at all possible between timing and momentum to also have cork shots 'strike' at the same time and do extra damage? I could easily see both ideas not working out, but I figured I'd bring them up anyway.

It would help for sure. I had tested it and it does reduce the lag. That is why i left a player out for some parts but for this place, i found no way to kill her without slowing down the first player. The worst thing about playing on easy is that you have much more hearts so eliminating a player is harder.

Yes except for the turtle and the cloud.

I had tried it without success but did not try it on every boss. I really wish this could work, somehow.

These are great ideas, for sure. Probably, The two most improvable parts, if the latter would work. I'd like to check it out more eventually, although i would probably redo the whole run, at that point, since this game is so not edit friendly.

Should I set the submission to Delayed?

Thanks but it will probably be a while before i finish. I want to restart from the first portrait Pete since i think there might be a way to do the 4x hit on him. I did not test it yet but i also have some other ideas i would like to try. The under water level is another thing i want to fix. edit: I tried the 4x hit on the portrait and it did not work... Neither on the ghost. The shot is either to high or hits before the jump. I'll restart from the water level, as this improvable for sure.

You mean we should publish this run as is? It'd make sense to wait at least until you finish testing.

I second getting this version published if we have to wait some time for you to complete the next run. This run was solid and seeing that it could be improved more is surprising but seeing that it would take some time shouldn't make this canceled. There have been TASes which went published even though the Author started the TAS again asking to accept or reject as the amount of time it would take to complete.

Since the 4x hit does not work, i will restart from the water stage. This might take months to finish and it could change the end time for better or worst, depending on how it affects the bosses.

If you guys think this is worthy of being published, until i fix it, then i'm all in. With new born twins, full time job and summer here, i might not have as much time as i would want, to work on this.

Try hard mode. Since it's 2 players, wouldn't that shorten the battles?

Two players does shorten battles but easy mode also halves them so i think it is preferable that way.

The old movie was there too, but this is probably an improvement on the entertainment side too. The comments here are quite good. Mooning it...
