http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_-QJiDQtKUA 22 seconds. Indeed it is faster. By 4 seconds. Also my video can be perfected. Definitely. On a side note this was my first n64 recording.

I like how Rikku posted that trick in the topic instead of keeping it to himself and secretively make a faster version (which I know many people would've done).

Sub 15 minutes getting closer...

I just tested it (made a m64 myself) and timed it. That star, using that strat, is at least 6 seconds faster than the volcano star! Sub-15 minutes is looking more and more possible...

You would still need to find improvements elsewhere to make up for the time, I think looking at it now, I probally wouldn't except an improvement run that doesn't beat 15 mins.

Maybe BLJ on the rotating platforms in Bowser 3 to gain speed and go straight through the windy section without being pushed back? Also, nice find Rikku.

Even more time will be saved, Rikku just told me that it's possible from the other side...

Should save another good 1-1.5 sec... Still closer. :)

Hmm, thinking about platofrms that move up... I know the 120 star run was recently completed and won't be redone for a while, but I'm guessing the blue cap star could be completed a tiny bit faster?

Nah, there's not much you can do on the elevators; you can BLJ, but it doesn't do much.

A friend of mine who owns this game told me he grabbed a star in LLL, after jumping off lava. So, he was dead as he went into the star. Apparently, the game gave him 255 stars. Someone should look into this. Maybe his game had a problem, or maybe it's a bug in all Mario 64 games.

I heard about some bug like that found in the beta version at E3 in 96, but I can tell you for a fact that when your energy is zero its not possible to collect stars although everything else is possible, it can be quite simply done if you have a gameshark and use the levatation cheat, or if you use the wingcap+cannon.

So you are saying that a run that is ~6 seconds faster isnt worth publishing...?

No, but publishing a run that is something like 15:01.2 isn't really worth it. Better wait for more improvements so we can go sub-15.

How is it not worth it? In a game as well optimized as this one, 6 seconds represents a significant gain. Of course you look for a way to get it sub-15, but just because it turns out to be just over 15 doesnt make it any less worth making.

Then let's call it a sub-905 seconds run. I don't really understand what this whole "sub this, sub that" discussion is about. It's just a number...

Reaching sub-something is just an accomplishment - a goal that you strive for. Reaching sub-something in my opinion looks better than anything over it.

It wouldn't be hard to implement the trick and post a six second improvement within 2 days, an improvement should look for other little optimizations throughout the game, I'm sure there is bound to be 2+ seconds worth of stuff outwith the log star.

The initial log star strategy was 6 seconds faster than hot-foot. Then Rikku found a way to walljump from the other side of the cage, which saves at least one more second. Swordless Link then had a theory that you could LJ along the fence and then go through/knock Mario off the fence to fall right on the star. Which would save even more time.

Did I hear "timesaver"? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TWzZHZnQfco I showed that to Rikku, and he said it could be faster than what's normally used.

Here are some interesting glitches: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IDF78YEFdWs&mode=related&search= http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5ZYeNP3EgzM Maybe some of them can be used. SilentSlayers has many other videos worth checking out.

Well I've often considered another way to save time: Anywhere there is slow down (most notably DDD) use the Lakitu cam to keep certain parts of the level from loading. Of course, depending on where you need to keep the Lakitu cam do this, you might have to play for a while without being able to see Mario at all. That could be impressive for maybe one star. While I'm on the topic of slowdown in DDD, is it really faster to wait to get the Bowser's sub star just so that you don't have to long jump down to the level opening afterwards? That sub introduces a whole lot of slowdown...
