By "possible" I meant with cheats, not possible normally. The game code doesn't lie.
Do you mean "if you could cheat to make the star appear when it otherwise isn't there, is it there"?

re: new wip That was amazing! I especially loved you showing off new (to me) ways of getting up one level of the spiral mountain during the koopa the quick race, and purposefully collecting 0 coins when you aren't going to collect them all :D I do however have some questions... the whole reason you got so many stars in the beginning was so you could do red cap before BOB. But the way you did BOB lent itself perfectly to getting the 100-coin star and start->exit course. which would mean you could do all previous areas and get 5 less stars since you have 15 at the end of BOB, and still do wing cap... Maybe I'm forgetting something obvious again :/

Ah, but we still needed the first three BoB stars for the Koopa shell to appear. Anyway, thanks for the feedback so far!

Oh yeah! I was wondering why you collected all of those stars. Makes perfect sense now.

You just need the first two stars for making Koopa Troopa appear. Why did you get "Shoot to the Island in the Sky"? EDIT: I'm sorry, I forgot to say that I think this run is getting very good. I loved Mario's maneuvers in "Footrace with Koopa the Quick". Keep up the good work!

Why did you collect the 100 coin stars in some levels, but didnt in BoB? Did you have enough already?

I meant so many stars at the beginning of the run, not BOB, sorry. But nevermind, my mind was somehow ignoring that wing cap was used extensively in BOB. I still believe it would be shorter to skip stars earlier, do the required BOB stars, then do wing palace in the sky, and then go back to BOB for all coins.

I loved KtQ and the way you jump with him over the balls!

I was thinking about the same thing. Maybe it is faster than other stars in the basement? To make MIPS appear sooner?

It...uh....made the randomness in BoB a little better... Seriously, it was a mistake. I misread somewhere and thought it took three stars for Koopa to appear. I'm debating what to do about it. I certainly don't want to redo the BoB coins; any suggestions? I tried hexing it, but as you can imagine, BoB has plenty of randomness in it, and it desynched almost immediately. I think I'll change the basement route a little bit (eg, do B2 and DDD first), but I'm open to opinions/suggestions.

Wouldn't it be slower to get MIPS to do DDD+B2 first, than, say, do SSL, LLL, HMC, and then do DDD+B2 later? Then again, I'm not factoring the blue cap into that...

I was thinking of doing DDD first just to have something to do with MIPS (eg, make the extra BoB star useful for something).

As time goes on my hope of someone submitting a surprise 1-star run diminishes... AKA seems sooo close.

Correct me if Im wrong, and I am 90% sure that I am, but could you make the koopa appear if you did chainchomp's gate, then selected that star? I wish I could chack, but my N64 is in a box in colorado somewhere....

You are 100% wrong! :P You have to beat KtQ (=get both 2 first stars) to make little koopa appear.

I'm afraid I won't be able to help testing as I will lose my home pc soon. Best of luck to all others, but it would be easier if AKA could think about the world and share what he has :P

I made my voice in IRC, but I'll set my vote in stone here I vote 70-star completely glitchless, so no BLJ at all

1 star? Wow, although I find the standard 16 star run to be a lot more entertaining; since I prefer seeing how fast you can collect the stars rather than how fast you can BLJ through the castle doors. Nevertheless, that's the most efficient castle/Bowser runs yet, so it looks like the 70/120 ones can be improved a short while.

But is there a rigorous definition of what is a glitch and what is not? I have a feeling there would be cases in which it would be debatable whether a technique that is used should be considered a glitch or not.

Its simple just call it a bljless run and use any glitch apart from that and complete the game in the fastest time possible.

I think a 70 star run is too contrived a category, i mean if good route planning is the goal then why not continue to improve the 120 star run since mario doesn't need stars to enter any course so there are a lot more route choices.
