In the demonstration he jumps several times, perhaps one needs to add another jump or two to make it work?

i don't think so, it looks that the acceleration towards the door was a constant after he got the speed from the staircase. it was just a matter of touching the ground at the right moment i think, so he had to try several times.

Aha. I hope you manage to pull it off. Else I think one must visit Bomb-Omb Battlefield twice in order to get all stars.

I think his position at the far edge of the door was important, and it looked like he was changing his angle back and forth until it worked. I didn't think it was before, but maybe the jumping against the door was also important (it might be thinner higher up, or it might be that you need to press against the very top-left corner of its collision box to pass through it).

Hmmm just saw the JRB video. He is definitely squeezing through a corner.... wouldnt it be easier to build up the speed on the stairs and go straight through the door? Thats all you need for the star door. I guess its too small and so the shallow angle allows more jumps? on the way out of JRB you may want to exit to the lobby through the level so you dont have to unlock the JRB door on the way out. I am not positive which is faster though.

That could be a good idea, but that requires Mario to reenter Jolly Roger Bay again? On the positive side I guess you can skip the door animation and the door to Whomp's Fortress is near. On the bad side, besides having to enter Jolly Roger Bay again, you are farther from the Princess Secret Slide. I don't know either what's best.

getting the star in the metal cap area does not send you to the waterfall, it sends you back to HMC entrance. So i think the best time to get the vanish cap would be after getting back to the main lobby after finishing all the underground levels. Is that possible or is the vanish cap required to finish dire dire docks quickly? if it is required, then one could re-enter hmc after finishing LLL and SSL just to be thrown at the waterfall, but that seems to be much slower than just walking back to the main hall...

Hmmm yeah I don't ever remember walking out of that hole. If it doesnt its something to keep in mind though.

This could be troublesome. You need the metal-hat for a star in Hazy Maze Cave, the one where you run at the bottom of the lake with the big creature in it. Unless it's possible to solve it in some other way? So perhaps getting the metal-hat first, then the vanish-hat, and then re-enter to finish Hazy Maze Cave? Would that be better if it's not possible to trigger the underwater button without the metal-hat?
It is possible without the metal cap, just so you know. You can backflip jump and wallkick from a wall, and the momentum from a ground pound will let Mario flip the switch. I found this trick on this part of Walton Dell's tricks website (next-to-last trick)(warning, that website will play music), and was verified as medium difficulty. I haven't tried it, but it seems plausible, and would probably be faster than the slow underwater metal-cap acceleration. I'd suggest looking through the rest of that site to see what else can be found.

I just tried this and can confirm it! Cartwheel jump + wall kick + stomp = switch relatively simple although it was kind of hard for me to aim because the camera wouldnt keep the button in view for that jump, this was on a console though. neat stuff.

That's awesome news. I vote for this being used when getting the underwater-button-star because it should look cool. And then one can forget about my mumbling about possible walking underwater without the metal hat aswell.

Finally!!! woke up this morning and decided to try a little bit more to do the JRB door glitch before going to work and in only 10 minutes trying i did it! :) guess i just needed some sleep then hehe hummm testing some more, i could get through the wall!! not only the door. If i'm close enough to the door, the JRB bay room is loaded (as i can see when looking through walls closely). i will test some more :) edit: oops! i just did JRB's 8 stars and it didn't bring me to the lobby... lol that sucks i had to either re-enter JRB or open the door using the stars :P anwyay it is a 10 minutes long movie here: http://www.angelfire.com/ex/uobt/sm64-foda-120stars-test6.zip remember its just a route testing run, its not optimized. the 100 coins route i think is good the way it is. but about exiting the course, i think it's faster to just open the door...

Your 100 coin route looks good. Since there are 104 coins, you can miss 2 reds. Maybe it would be faster to swim straight down into the cave instead of getting the red coin in the shell close to the surface and getting the other coins, but I don't know, just throwing an idea there. Also, there's a way to do the 5th star cannon-less Right here. (vid by curtis bright) It seems faster to me than to open the cannon, but since you use it twice I don't know... I think it's worth testing though. Why did you enter bob-omb battlefield at the end? Shoudln't you go there when you have the wing cap? The rest looks pretty good for a test run. Keep it up =)

humm yea maybe, killing goombas isn't too fast either, but i'll try that on the final run thanks

i don't think it's faster to get it without the cannon. i've seen the vid but he doesn't start from the start of the level, when the vid begins, he is already in the water under the pole. I think it's worth it to open the cannon in this level. Maybe i'm wrong though.

no reason, actually. i think that the princess slide will be the next move (after exiting JRB by the door instead of choosing exit). that is, if doing the JRB door glitch is usefull at all, which i think it isnt?

Awesome Foda that you managed to do it. Then the route should be good as it is. And exiting the Jolly Roger Bay-room via the star door should be the best option I guess, since then you are close to the Princess Secret Slide. So get 1 star from there and then head for Whomp's Fortress. I'm starting to get really excited about this now ;)

Yes, it looks very, very good! (even thou it's not perfect) The way you got the "cannon star" was just so fun. I didn't even know you could shoot that way with cannon. I think the Cannon should be opened. To help to get the star from the plateau and to speed up the collection of the red coins (like you did). I may have an idea how to make the run a bit faster. The 8th star you get in JRG (the "bonus" star). I think you should collect them in different order. Start by taking the one in the in front of you. Then go to the left (or right, doesn't matter really) and take the con from the floor. Then continue to the left and take the coin from the upper section of the room. And so on. This how you don't need to circle the room twice. Otherwise the run is just amazing! Can't wait to see more. Go FODA! ;)
Which run should I encode next? :)

i think that it's faster to get 1 star from bob-omb battlefield first, because it's so slow to get the glitch working, but i hope i'm wrong because it sure is a cool and unexpected start for the movie. But, if the JRB door glitch is too slow, i propose this route: 1) Bomb-omb Battlefield - 1 star 2) Princess's Secret Slide - 1 star 3) Whomp's Fortress - 7 stars 4) Jolly Roger Bay (& Secret Aquarium) - 8 stars 5) Princess's Secret Slide - 1 star 6) Tower of the Wing Cap - 1 star 7) Cool Cool Mountain - 7 stars 8) Bomb-omb Battlefield - 6 stars 9) Bowser in the Dark World - 1 star 10) go to the basement to stomp those pillars and go back inside 11) Catch Mips (the bunny) - 1 star 12) A star from the Toad in HMC lobby - 1 star 13) Hazy Maze Cave (& Cavern of the Metal Cap) - 8 stars 14) Lethal Lava Land - 7 stars 15) Shifting Sand Land - 7 stars 16) Catch Mips again - 1 star 17) Dire Dire Docks - 7 stars 18) Bowser in the Fire Sea - 1 star 19) Big Boo's Haunt - 7 stars 20) go outside and get the vanish cap 21) Wet-Dry World - 7 stars 22) Tiny-Huge Island - 7 stars 23) A star from the Toad in front of TTM - 1 star 24) Tall Tall Mountain - 7 stars 25) Snowman's Land - 7 stars 26) Wing Over the Rainbow - 1 star 27) Tick Tock Clock - 7 stars 28) A star from the Toad outside RR - 1 star 29) Rainbow Ride - 7 stars 30) Bowser in the Sky - 1 star anyway, i hope that doing JRB first is faster because it looks cooler that way. also i'm gonna try entering the star door after having gained momentum from the stairs (with 0 stars), but it's most unlikely because i don't think i'll be able to backwards jump again after having stopped the jumping.

the cannon star can be taken without "seeing stars" from hard hitting the wall, it can be taken smoothly, but i saved that for a more final run ;) also i didn't use the cannon to get the 8 red coins, i used it to get the star at "through the jet stream". but i think the cannon should be used to get 5 stars in total, so the order i took the stars should be changed: 1) 8 red coins and open the cannon 2) plunder in the sunken ship (using the cannon) 3) can the eel come outto play? (using the cannon) 4) pole jumping for star (using the cannon) 5) through the jet stream (using the cannon) 6) 100 coins + secret in the cave (using the cannon to launch to the red coin over the pole and then doing all i did + what was suggested of skipping 2 red coins instead. edit: oh yea, and about the 8th star, i thought about doing that, but the height difference is too high, i figured it wouldn't be faster. but anyway, i did all this run in 1 hour or so hehe i will test which one is faster in the future.

Doesn't the open-star-door animation take a really long time? I think it would be much faster to do the secret star by JRB last, and then re-enter it and pause-exit to the lobby (it doesn't have an intro screen so it should be faster than pause-exit from the main JRB). Foda: That's great that you got it to work. It looks like it was more the wall than the door that was the trick.

Your rough route looks pretty good. I also think glitching through JRB door looks neat. It might be better to try and arrange it so you only have to enter each painting world once, ie: Wait until you have the Wing Cap before going to Bob-Omb battlefield. One question, though, why not wait until after you've compelted Big Boo's Haunted Mansion to stomp the pillars? That way you can do them and go outside to the Vanish Cap all at once? Plus, I think you only need 12 (?) Stars to open Big Boo's level, so maybe you can do that before going into the Basement? It's been awhile since I've played all the way through the game myself, though, so maybe some of my guesses are wrong...

problem is, i think that when you finish the 2nd bowser level, the game puts you back into the main hall, right? so i don't think it'd be nice to beat the 2nd bowser level and then have to go back all the way down to the basement just to stomp the pillars. and nitsuja, watching the video i made (re-entering the JRB and choosing "exit") looks clearly slower than just opening the door.

I don't know if I understood your question right, but the point to do this level last is that you need the blue hat for this level. Unless, of course, there is a way to glitch through the painting which holds the secret room with the big eye.

I didn't say re-enter JRB, I said re-enter the secret star level near JRB and choose exit from there, that should be fast given that you can jump back into it perfectly and the game drops you right into that level instantly. I'm guessing it's at least 5 full seconds slower to open the door.

hmmm that way maybe its faster, but if it is, then it's just a few frames. i'll measure this next thing when i get home: - going from the middle of the room in JRB, re-entering the hole in the wall, choosing exit and heading for princess secret slide (measure frames). - going from the middle of the room in JRB, exiting through the door, and entering the princess secret slide (measure frames).
