He goes through the door, but the area behind it isn't loaded (that's the part that requires the key). If he were to try to walk up the stairs, he'd just hit an invisible wall.

Well No, the area in which that is possible is in a different location inside the game. while it may look the same, it is a different area.

there isn't a top of the stairs. the whole upstairs is not in memory. there's an invisible wall there because if there was't you would just "fall"

Oh, that's too bad. Anyway, have a look at these resources: ― http://tasvideos.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=6534http://tasvideos.org/FAQ.html In any case, your question is not related to Mario 64 (this is a Mario 64 thread), so I suggest it is not continued in this particular thread (that you are reading right now). Also, if English is problematic for you, you can try asking some fellow Norwegian for tips. For example, TNSe is from Norway.

Okay, new 120 star WIP...First of about three non-snapshot WIPs. 12 stars done, mostly a redone JRB and the Lobby Secret Stars. Enjoy. http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/1616323801/RZ%20-%20SM64%20%28120%29%20-%2012%20Stars%20Done.m64

Looks quite nice to me! :) The only thing that looked a little odd is how you got the 7th star on the road to Bowser 1. Yet I'm sure you had your reasons.

Stunning WIP I must say. The second star you get in JRB is eye candy. :)

I've played the game before, but I don't understand any of these acronyms. :P I'm too lazy to set up the N64 emulator stuff, so I'll just wait it out. I actually had no idea this was being done, and I'm pleased that it is. Coincidently, I've been watching the current 120 star TAS (taking breaks after getting bored) and it's pretty cool, but I wish it was a bit more interesting. I guess since we've seen all of the tricks now, it isn't as fun to watch a second time. The bowser stages aren't as cool either due to having to get the red coins.

If you think all the tricks and routes are just being optimised movement-wise, you're wrong. The majority of the stars (will) have reworked strategies. Only in this WIP every single star was done in a different way (except both PSS and the aquarium, but I won't count them as they're too linear).

I've watched every published TAS ever made of this game, and that WIP kept me on the edge of my seat more than any so far have. For the first time in a long time every movement, route, and strategy appears to be the very fastest that could ever be possible. You've outdone yourself and N64 TASing in general... keep up the excellent work.

Being the first post on a new page, I am (unofficially) required to remind people: "Reminder!: You can't go through the key door". It sounds like this run is going to rock! I want to try and set it up so I can watch it. There is one thing that's always bugged me about Mario 64 TASes, though it's not really important. When the Lakutu is flying at the beginning, the "Mario 64 TAS" info comes up. That's cool. but I always thought that the "This is a tool assisted video" message should pop up during this opening scene as well. It would sort of give it an Opening credits feeling. Make it pop up somewhere round here to fit with the music. You know, right when the second bit of music starts. It's just always felt like it should pop up there. Also, I have never tried to set up the n64 emulator before, so if someone can give me specific details on which plug-ins and which emulator to download for this game, I would be very thankful.

You don't need to go to any great length or have exact settings to make SM64 sync on your computer. Looking at your status you've made and have a published TAS on this site (Gb). All the emus on this site work in pretty much the same way in terms of loading a rom and playing back a movie.

well, I don't even have the slightest clue what version of the emulator to use, or what rom to use. I sort of need some details on how to run this particular WIP.

Here's a YouTube link if you can't watch it on the emulator: http://ca.youtube.com/watch?v=dCZqN21RYaM

Thank you very, very much. I can never do anything with N64 emulators without wanting to tear clumps of hair out in anger. I highly admire anyone who can make a TAS on one of those things. *goes to watch video*

There is only one choice for N64 - Mupen64 v8. You can find it here: http://jxq.skuzz.com/emu/all.html#n64 (you don't need either of the two patches, just download the one with the star). The ROM needed is easy enough: Super Mario 64 (U) [!].z64 The default video, audio, and controller plugins should work fine since SM64 can be rendered well by basically any of them (although a better video plugin is needed for the pretty dissolve effect, that really shouldn't matter). To play the video, load the ROM and then go to Utilities>Movie>Start Movie Playback... The rest should be self-explanatory.

Cool. I'll do that next time. So the video was pretty dang awesome! A couple times I actually said "What the Cr*p?!" The trick for skipping all that swimming was awesome. It also looks like you made better use of wall kicks, which always look cool. Can't wait to see the rest! But I don't know if I'll watch any other WIPs, just to keep the amount of fun I have while watching the finished run at full. (assuming it gets finished)

if anyone wants to be a jerkface and grab a published video from here and cut off the intro and republish on some other site, or for example, somone downloads it but fast-forwards through the first non-gameplay moments, then the disclaimer is lost. If you look at the TASvideos encoding guidelines, you'll see more about this. As for the new WIP... fuckin' awesome. When mario went into the aquarium, for some reason I was like "oh, ok... I guess they decided to break up the up-till-now cool part of JRB and the rest of its boring stars by having this little aquarium intermission." and then you went back to the lobby and it hit me: JRB was already done. Keep up the stellar (hah!) work and I'm glad we'll be spoiled twice more before the end result.

In Bowser 1, there's an invisible wall so close to the start you can turn around, long jump, and wall jump back to the course. Would it be possible to use this invisible wall to get the first red coin without needing to push the button?

Nope, it's impossible to wall kick off an invisible wall. Even if Mario could, the angle would be all wrong. Thanks for all the feedback so far.

*reads encoder guidelines* Oh, I get it now. Yeah, that's pretty important. Did people actually do that at first? Cause that's pretty lame of them, cutting out the evidence.
