There's 76 console-doable-in-sane-amount-of-time, one or two more with emu :) This topic moves too quickly! =\ Where is this WIP for 120 stars?

Thanks, i am happy to hear that, i would just like to add that even in a 3d world, to move from point A to point B still is drawn as a straight line. And i'm not gonna stress every combination of keypresses possible just to see which one is fastest, i'll figure it out and optimize. And only few runs in the site can be considered perfect, for the most of them, i said they look perfect. So can this one, as long as we work together. It may not be the fastest possible, but at least nobody knows how to make it faster, that's the objective.
You are a long, long (LONG) way from ever achieving a movie that no-one knows how to improve with a 120 star run in Mario 64. I mean, just look at the 16 star run, we already know how to improve it by a considerable number of seconds (see my comments in the automatically generated 'vote to publish' topic ... also, the backwards long-jump trick is obviously not used everywhere it could be. In any case, good luck and I will be there to make comments as you go along. I watched the test run and had many, many comments I could make (a quick example is on the Princess secret slide, do the turn backwards trick while on the slide, not before... run into the right wall as the slide begins to turn left) but I really don't have the time considering how unpolished it was (I know that is what you were going for, I'm just saying)... as you begin developing the actual run and posting WIPs, I will be able to comment on specific things that I see (and so will others). I look forward to your journey and helping, by way of constructive criticism, along the way in any way I can.

Its no news that i'm far from that, but what i said remains true if everyone says something when they see a mistake on one of my WIPS. If you know how to make it faster, just tell me and i'll do it. If i reach the end of the run and nobody has anything to say, then its gonna be "nobody knows how to make it faster". Also, i said there's no need to comment on in-level related stuff on the 120 stars test run, that was just to check the castle route. I didn't use much of tools there.

Are you sure that's it? I just reached 76 with no help from my emulator and I'm pretty sure I can get more. The theoretical maximum is 90 because 2 stars in every course are for 8 red coins and 100 coins. I reached 76 through 15 castle secret stars and the maximum of 5 stars in course 2, 3, 5, 9, 10, 12, 14 and 15. I abondoned the other courses without reaching 5, but not always because they couldn't be reached, but usually laziness. The star numbers in the other courses are: 1 = 1,2,3 4 = 2,6 6 = 1,3,5,6 7 = 1,2,4 8 = 1,2,3,4 11 = 1,6 13 = 1,2,3 I'll give 77 a shot tomorrow.

["Coinless Stars" Collect as many Power Stars as you can without getting a single coin anywhere, not even outside the 15 main courses. Special caps and Cannons allowed. Whenever you accidentally collect a coin, reset the game!] taken from http://www.geocities.com/n64highscores/. everyone there seems to think it tops out at 77. don't know if this helps or not.

Awesome. Either I'm almost done, or I'm about to set a record! I haven't put a lot of thought into which of the remaining stars can be collected, but I know that I could get one more star in Course 1 if I could get that stupid Bob-omb to blow me through the gate. That thing has blown me up so many times I'm still crispy. Since they don't allow coins to be collected even outside of the 15 courses, that means a number of mine don't count: 3 from Bowser, 3 from the Switch Block stages, and the Secret Aquarium, so I'm at 69 by their standards.

The stars in the 3 bowser worlds, 3 cap switches, secret aquarium, and wing mario over the rainbow are uncollectable unless you can somehow activate them without collecting the red coins. That brings the theoretical maximum down to 82 of which 78 have been collected.

Woops, forgot about Wing Mario Over the Rainbow. So I'm at 68. Yeesh. I think I need to find a new hobby.

Oh... I thought this was for no coins on the coin total sheet, so special levels didn't count.

That's the way I was playing it, but these guys have a different standard. They say that 77 stars can be collected without touching a coin anywhere, so there are 85 stars that can be collected without putting a coin on the score sheet out of a maximum possible 90. That's crazy. I can easily identify 3 that simply can't be collected without touching a coin (5 secrets in Course 1, both stars for sliding in Course 4). I guess I'll find out where the other 2 are.

You're sure you can't just skim alongside the coins somehow? Maybe try it with frame advance.

I'm sure you can avoid all the coins in the ice slide. It's the coins at the chimney before the slide that would be unavoidable.

I'm not using slowdown, re-recording, etc. I'm only using an emulator because I'm too lazy to dust off my N64. I mentioned the attempt in response to the whole "experienced speedrunner" thing as an example of people doing their own thing; and in the hope that someone could tell me how many stars are possible so that I would know what I was aiming for. That question seems to be answered now, and I would hate for the subject to overshadow the actual TAS discussion (meaning that I'll shut up now, other than to say that I really don't think even frame advance is going to allow me to go down that chimney without touching the coins).

Well, you exit a door at the bottom of the slide, but I don't think there's another doorway to enter it. I could be wrong, though.

The chainchomp star can be collected by warping through the gate with a bombomb explosion. The secrets in the pyramid puzzle can be completed if you jump over the coins without touching them. That brings the coinless stars up to 78 leaving 4 more... I think three of them are the 5 coins one in Bombomb battlefield and the 2 on the CCM slide. I forget what the fourth one is but those are the only ones left to be collected.

Possibly a star from Toad can't be gotten because you don't have enough stars? Or maybe not; I forget how many stars are required for what.

hmm I think a maximum coinless stars tas would be really interesting. Just like a 120 star run, except you never collect a coin and it only gets 78 stars. I think just for fun I'm going to record just using the keyboard at full speed (except for pyramid star) just doing a savestate at the beginning of each star. I'll post it in this thread even though it wont be very good.

FODA: Any news on the WIP? :-) Are you still wanting feedback on the test run or are you gathering the willpower? You know that everyone is really looking forward to this :-)

I'm still a little too busy to work on this, but i'm leaving one of my jobs (yes i got 2!) and i'll have more free time when this year is over. I think i'll remake it from the outside of the castle (it's slower than spezzafer's the way it is)
