The non-trivial possibly coinless stars are (italics is not yet found): - Bob-Omb Battlefield : Star 5 (Mario Wings to the Sky). Believed impossible because it is unknown how to get the secret numbers without getting the coins. - Bob-Omb Battlefield : Star 6 (Behind Chain Chomp's Gate). Solved by the Chain Chomp gate glitch. - Cool, Cool Mountain : Star 1 (Slip Slidin' Away). Believed impossible because it is unknown how to enter the cottage without collecting the coins on the chimney. - Cool, Cool Mountain : Star 3 (Big Penguin Race). See star 1. - Cool, Cool Mountain : Star 5 (Snowman's Lost His Head). You need to select this star to get the snowman's head to appear, so either (see star 1) or there needs to be another way to get the star. - Shifting Sand Land : Star 6 (Pyramid Puzzle). Solved by me (and later Filimonas) by jumping over the coins to get the secret numbers. Never (I think) completed without savestates. Hope this helps. Every other star either requires 100 coins or red coins, or is possible. Anyway, it'd be nice if you guys could try to find solutions for the 4 remaining stars. Consider it a challenge![/i]

Yeah, that's where I was thinking you would need to "squeeze" in somehow.

The thing is that you can be quite far from a coin and still get it. So, it's completely impossible to get through the *top* of the chimney with no coins. To do it coinless, you'll have to glitch into the slide without going through the chimney top at all. If you can figure out how to do that, kudos.

Maybe if you could glitch through the wall of the cottage somehow (it's probably another "black room of death" just like the glitch through the castle wall), then jump into the chimney warp from below thus avoiding all the coins...though I hope there's actually a floor underneath the inside of the cottage <_<

The slide zone is likely a seperate area that must be loaded by touching a trigger zone within the chimney. I dont think there'd be a trigger near the cottage. Now if you could find a way to walk (swim?) through the ground to get to it or glitch so fast you can pass through the chimney wall you'd be set.
This signature is much better than its previous version.

You're talking about getting inside and jumping up to the inside of the chimney?

Glitching into either the upper or lower cottage could allow you to get the next 3 coinless stars... if you get into the lower cottage you could jump+kick your way all the way up the slide (being careful to avoid coins... that would be quite a feat!).

I'm not sure if this will work, but I have a potential idea: Could we use the baby penguin to glitch through the corner of the chimney or building? It would probably work on the same principle as the 16-star Mips glitch, if it's possible. Or does that glitch only work with doors? If we could use the penguin, it would be much faster than going all the way down and wall kicking back up (I think...). Is anyone willing to see if this is possible? Just a thought.

Pop through a corner with the penguin the same way it was done with the Bob-Omb? Maybe.

More likely you could use the penguin to "MIPS" through the door of the lower hut (where you come out after finishing the slide).

Then it would be a question of how far up the slide you have to get in order to trigger the star. Can you just walk out the door again, or do you have to get all the way to the top of the slide? Getting the whole way up without touching a coin would be oh so much fun. There are a couple of drops, too. Is it even possible to jump high enough to make it the whole way back up? If it is, then you can get both stars. If not, maybe just the one for getting to the bottom, or maybe neither.

getting the star for just going down the slide would allow you to get the Snowman's big head star (I believe)... anyway, I'm assuming it's possible to kick your way back up the slide without getting a coin. I can't think of any particular point that would make it impossible.

Before continuing this line of thought, put in a walk-through-walls code and make sure there actually is a warp point inside the lower door. Getting through the door is meaningless if there's nothing behind it to take Mario inside. The programmers may have just assumed that Mario couldn't walk through the door and not made it link to the slide area at all. If the only warp point is through the chimney, then I would test to see if Mario can reach it sideways (through a chimney crease) without collecting coins, or if he needs to jump at it to avoid picking up coins (meaning he glitches through the cabin walls and wall-kicks up to the point.)

How about glitching through the wall on the cabin up top and just jumping up into the warp point in the chimney?

Yeah, that seems like the best option (glitching into the chimney). I just got through the door in the lower cabin and fell straight down to my death (thanks to Myles for his tip on how to get in). The trick is to give the mother her child penguin and then pick it up and have her chase after you, get her close to the door and drop the child and then jump between her and the door to glitch through. I only did this once so it certainly doesn't prove anything about it being impossible but I'd chalk it up to "unlikely" at this point... so, we'll probably need to find a way to glitch in through the chimney (possibly using both little penguins somehow?).

So far in my test run getting max stars and never getting a coin, I am at 23 stars. It gets all the stars in the lobby first, then Bowser, then goes to the basement, goes up the slope through the water stomps the pillars, does the blue switch, then exits to the castle lobby and through the door to BBH then down the stairs and goes through the door and thats as far as I am, its about 25 minutes here it is: http://rapidshare.de/files/8849077/coinless.m64.html I can't say its incredibly interesting, but its not horrible at the same time. It probably wont get really good until the later levels, but this is all I've had time for now, and no I didn't do the best way of doing blast through the wall or whatever it is in Whomps Fortress and also I didn't use the best method in JRB on the blast to the ledge star, in case that disturbs you when you get there. I really didn't optimize this completely, as for one I had only 8 directions to deal with, so it could definetly go faster. Didn't use frame advance or really do anything slower than 40%, but I did use quite a few savestates. It's worth a fast-forward viewing I'd say, or if you have the pacience, regular motion (minus JRB...That level is so slow). I would really appreciate it if people told me if i missed any stars or if I did something horribly wrong strategically. Anyway, I hope you enjoy it, and I will let you all know when I finish the basement, because hopefully it will be a bit more entertaining.

How about a moderator splitting this thread up to two different threads? I'm personally interested in reading about progress in the 120 stars run and totally uninterested in the talk about "no coins" run, so I'd rather have these discussions in different threads? I also guess some people thinks the opposite...

That's fine with me. I didn't intend to commandeer this thread with the no coin discussion, but I'm glad it's at least about SM64.

That's fine with me, but I mean FODA even said that he hasnt had time to work on the run lately, so its not like we are in any real hurry. Any comments on the run? I know it wont get quite as interesting as it could be until probably the basement, but any feedback would still be appreciated. Hopefully I'll be able to get through the basement/bowser 2 this weekend.

Would it be possible for you guys to make an avi of the "through the gate" video? Dom Dunc's requested it over at the GameFAQs board and I couldn't get the emulator to encode without quitting.
