Right, but he also shows up in IRC sporadically to defend Genesis. If he has time for that, he has time to stop by and say "star #72". Let's all get mad at FODA some more!

Hi, it's true that i haven't worked anymore on the run since the last WIP. I don't want to rush things, i am working on some other stuff (some other hobbies too) and will get back to the mario64 run soon when i feel inspired, or else it wouldn't come out as good as i want it to be.
I have to make some comments on BBH and DDD, but since you won't play these courses anymore I'll save my time! ;)
The Bowser course looks just great. Looking forward seeing the next WIP.
Hey looks like this has been shaping up really nicely since I last checked. I like the reworks for entertainment, especially the penguin slide. Keep it up...
(edit: entertainment, not improvement. doh)
We talked about this in the Mario 64 thread, but I didn't want to clutter up the thread which, at this point, should be about FODA's awesome 120 star run.
I had been attempting a coinless run of the game, and it was determined that there are a maximum possible 82 coinless stars (5 in each of the 15 courses and 7 castle secret stars). Of those, 78 are known to be possible. qqwref explained why 4 are not:
nico mentioned a site (http://www.geocities.com/n64highscores/) where the human record for coinless stars is still 77. Presumably the missing star is in Shifting Sand Land.
The N64 high scores site also shows that 113 capless, cannonless stars have been collected, but doesn't say how many coinless, capless, cannonless stars there are.
Yesterday I started a CCC-less run with the intention of collecting all of them, then proceeding (in Slot B) to collect the remaining coinless stars by using only the caps and cannons that absolutely need to be used to collect the remaining coinless stars. Then I'm going to do a CC-less (capless, cannonless) run in Slot C that collects only the coins that absolutely have to be collected, and uses only the caps and cannons that have to be used in order to get 113 CC-less stars. Minimalism to the max!
Anyway, I'm up to 66 CCC-less stars, having collected the following stars:
Stage:
01 = 12**** (2)
02 = 123*5* (4)
03 = 123*** (3)
04 = *2***6 (2)
05 = 123*5* (4)
06 = 1*3456 (5)
07 = 12*456 (5)
08 = 1234** (4)
09 = 12**5* (3)
10 = 1234** (4)
11 = 1234** (4)
12 = 12*456 (5)
13 = 1234*6 (5)
14 = 12345* (5)
15 = 12*45* (4)
And 7 castle secret stars.
I haven't been able to collect the Chain Chomp star yet, though I have blown myself up a lot. I also haven't been able to jump to the island yet. I haven't been able to get Blast Away the Wall in Whomp's Fortress using FODA's discovery. In Jolly Roger Bay, I can't pull off FODA's trick where Mario jumps off a spike and wall jumps to the star on the ledge. I haven't been able to collect one other star in Jolly Roger Bay and one in Dire, Dire Docks because I can't swim fast enough to collect them without the Metal Cap. I've been trying to get that star in JRB for the last 10 years, so I'm not expecting to succeed. I haven't tried to collect the 5 secrets in Shifting Sand Land because apparently it may never have been done without save states.
Of the 78 coinless stars, I think that the following can't be collected CCC-less:
Course 5 Star 6 (Eye to Eye in the Secret Room): Can't fight the giant eye without the Vanish Cap.
Course 9 Star 6 (Collect the Caps): Can't collect the star in the cage without the Vanish Cap.
Course 10 Star 6 (Into the Igloo): Can't collect the star in the igloo without the Vanish Cap.
Course 11 Star 6 (Quick Race Through Downtown): Can't collect the star in the cage in the city without the Vanish Cap.
Course 15 Star 6 (Somewhere Over the Rainbow): Can't collect the star on the island without using the cannon on the ship.
So I figure there should be 73 CCC-less stars.
74 Capless, Coinless stars.
77 Cannonless, Coinless stars.
78 Coinless stars.
And I'll take their word that there are 113 Capless, Cannonless stars.
If anyone can amend any of this information, please let me know.
Incidentally, it looks really cool to have 66 stars and still have water in the moat and the light shining from the ceiling. I haven't activated any switch blocks or opened any cannons.

It's a pain in the royal rear! lol
Coins are only hard to avoid in a few situations. If there is a line of them, especially along a plank, platform or ledge, it can require a perfectly timed triple jump or long jump. Then there are slides. Finishing the Princess Secret Slide in under 21 seconds without hitting a coin was the hardest one. Lastly, there are many places (like in the volcano in Lethal Lava Land) where there are steps leading to the star, each with a coin on it. That means jumping on the edge of the steps to avoid the coins. Otherwise, a CCC-less run looks a lot like a speedrun. I didn't bother recording it because I didn't think anyone would want to watch me running around for hours, but I'm pleased that it only took me two days to get as far as I got.

Id be really interested in seeing each of these different varients TAS'ed. I really enjoy any Mario runs and i think it would be great to see what people could come up with for CCC or any of the other CC runs to make them as fast as possible. :)
"I think we can put our differences behind us... for science, you monster."
I copied the CCC-less run to Slot B and picked up the Vanish Cap in order to pick up the 4 stars that can't be obtained CCC-less because they need the Vanish Cap, so I have a 70 star Cannonless, Coinless run now. I beat Bowser 3, also without touching a coin in the level or during the fight. It's a bit tricky to get past the one red coin on the pole, but mission accomplished. 70 coinless, cannonless stars using only the Vanish Cap.
I then copied the CC-less run to Slot C and opened the cannon in Course 15 in order to get the star on the island, getting the last coinless star that can't be obtained CCC-less. 71 stars using only one cannon and the Vanish Cap. I could easily use the cannon to shoot to the star on the island in Course 1, and to Blast Away the Wall in Whomp's Fortress, and to shoot to the ledge in Jolly Roger Bay, and I could use the Metal Cap to get the two stars in JRB and Dire, Dire Docks that have been eluding me. That would get me to 76 of a maximum possible 78 coinless stars. I'm still hoping that I'll be able to get some or all of them without resorting to using a cap or cannon, but at least I know I can get within 1 star of the record from the N64 record site any time I want to.
Now I'm working on adding the rest of the stars to get all 113 capless, cannonless stars, still collecting only the coins that absolutely have to be collected.
As I said, I didn't record it because this is not a TAS. I'm using no save states, slow motion, or frame advance, and I'm using a real N64 controller and the Adaptoid plugin so that everything is exactly like a real console. I have the SRAM, though.

Actually I believe the 78th coinless star (shifting sand land) has been done already. Or so says this video
And there are also 114 capless cannonless stars with FODA's trick in whomp's fortress
You should also check this site
This star has been collected using the chuckya glitch. If you havent seen this check out chuck brights videos at http://www.vortiginous.com/cbright/
You have to take the chuckya throught the loading trigger until he turns into a star. The only star on the city side is the QRTD.
This signature is much better than its previous version.
The Chuckya glitch isn't allowed at the site that nico mentioned, so there may be some debate as to whether or not that is really a CCC-less star. The non-TAS community may hold glitches to a different standard.

On a related note, a few of you might remember i did (but didn't quite finish) a 78 star coinless tas of this game (although i only had 8 directions to work with). I think I had just gotton to the third floor when I dropped it...60 something stars.
If you are interested, I can upload it somewhere...but I didn't really optimize it all that much.

Here is Shifting Sand Land completed. I am posting the WIP but i don't plan to remake anything, it's too frustrating to remake since this is taking so long to make already.

Savestate at the start of bowser in the fire sea:

I remade everything from the last red coin in bowser in the fire sea.
The 8 red coins star is slower than the speedrun record because he had the triple jump powerup and he had the cannon open already. I don't open the cannon in this stage at all.
Also, after SSL you'll see a speedrun of each star of LLL. I made it playing at 100% speed and saving only at the white screen after picking the star name, and playing my my dualshock psx gamepad. Just for fun, of course it isn't part of the run, but it goes here on this WIP anyway.
The last 2 stars "100 coin" and "elevator tour in the volcano" seem to be world records, if www.sm64.com is the only place to be taken into consideration. I don't know if they would accept this emulator video for those star times, but i could try it on my n64. Problem is my graphics card can't capture video, so i'd have to do a "screener" of myself playing using my digital camera. Also, my n64 controller's analog stick is kinda loose...
He's alive!!
I'm downloading right now! I will edit this post with my comments. :)
Very nice run so far. I particularly liked the 100 coin star for SSL. Unfortunately I don't have any feedback, but that probably doesn't matter since you won't remake SSL again ;).
Just a heads up, that you probably already know, but you can double damage boost up the laval waterfall in LLL. That may prove faster for something in the future.

I didnt know there were waterfalls made of lava....
Glad to see progress! If things get frustrating just put it down for a bit. Ultimately this should be fun both for you to do and us to watch.
