You will create history if you manage to be the first one to make a TAS for a N64 game ^_^ Nope, sorry, it's already been done over a year ago. Well, maybe not with frame advance, but I did a DK SC flap run in MK64 and did it in about 3 segments by using save states and then made a vid of it. Someone also made a few SM64 TASs of individual star runs with about 6 or 7 segments and used video editing to combined them. Edit: Here are those TASs, made by Martin: http://rapidshare.de/files/6535070/talon_final.wmv.html http://rapidshare.de/files/6535149/bowser2.1.wmv.html http://rapidshare.de/files/6535210/Bowser3_bigSC_andQuickTurn-1.wmv.html

They are both far lower now. Holy Moly recorded a 18:18 and LeCoureur a 18:09. You should contact them. And if none of them is available Curtis Bright. Yeah, I knew that, but those vids aren't online as far as I know. I'll ask Marius if he has a faster vid next time I see him on AIM.
I knew you knew, since you told us on SDA in the first place. ;) Anyway, they both where pretty fuzzy about the techniques that are fastest not being the same they'd use in an actual run, so that's why I think contacting them would be best. (And I do apologize for confusing 18:18 and 18:14)

Spezzarer, have you decided yet what route you're gonna use? I think the best route would involve doing the 2 stars in Cool Cool Mountain instead of the secret slide, and possibly replacing Boil the Big Bully with the red coin star in the first Bowser level, it depends how fast that can be done, I'm not sure. I was going to suggest doing Mario Wings to the sky, but then I realized that you'd need to do the long first star to get the cannon. Another even crazier possibility would be to forget about CCM and instead do Blast to the Stone Pillar and Through the Jet Stream in Jolly Roger Bay since you can glitch through that door and not watch the opening door animation.

for now I'm just doing a 16-star test run so it can be easier determined what can be done faster in a tool-assisted run here it is up to 8 stars (just finished the second princess secret slide star) there are many tricks to be optimized in a TAS of a three dimensional game, with the inclusion of a whole new dimension, depth, into the project adding many more possibilities for optimization this is just a test so far because it most definitely can be improved with more tests

Holy hell, spezzafer. You certainly haven't cut any corners that I can see. :O However the final run turns out, I can say with certainty that it's going to be completely fucking astounding. edit: "cut any corners" referring to your thoroughness, not your actual shortcuts :)

Wow, even for a test... that was awesome. I can't wait to see more.

Very promising. It so entertaining that I was hoping to see a 120 star run from spezzafer :) Although, I do have to point out that the less coins you get, the more time you save. That's because after the levelthe coins roll in the counter and the less you have the less it takes time. I think that in the Sliding level (don't know the actual name) you can avoid few coins. But since this is just a testrun it doesn't matter (atleast to me).
Which run should I encode next? :)

Also on the regular princess star: If you start a stomp move (z when airborne) while opening the box, could Mario be a few pixels higher? That would save the few frames he has to ascend in the current one. (Don't take that wrong, I love it so far!)

Have you tried getting the Cool Cool Mountain stars yet? I'm almost certain it's faster that getting the secret slide stars. Edit: Btw have you timed how far ahead of the WR run you are so far? Edit 2: You did the slide wrong. Watch the 12.4 vid on SDA and do it just like that (except for the beginning part of course). Edit 3: I'm not sure if it's faster (it looks faster), but you should try LeCoureur's To the Top of the Fortress strategy. He goes left and then does a walljump up to the upward moving platform. Edit 4: Have you tried the owl strategy for Fall Onto the Caged Island? I think I remember someone saying it was faster.

thanks to everyone for their compliments! there's now an updated movie right after getting the first Hazy Maze Cave star I haven't tried anything completely different from the WR run except getting the red coins star in the first Bowser level instead of boiling the bully in the lava world. A lot of the strategies are faster, and I think it's about 1:20 faster than the 18:59 run so far.

Also don't forget that in stretches too short to long jump, you can go faster by diving and jumping. I'm not sure but I think I noticed a few places where you could have done that. Edit: I think someone said that making 2 long jumps to the 8 star door is faster than a triple jump. Edit 2: Are you sure it's not faster to do both LLL stars after SSL? I think it would save a tiny bit of distance. Btw you did the first SSL star wrong. The strategy in the vid I posted is faster.

I actually tested and compared the Owl vs. the cannon and the cannon is just barely faster (by like 2 frames) so it doesn't matter much there...I guess the person who tested didn't take into account the instant cannon-aiming available with a TAS. The slide in the record video was done like that at the beginning in order to turn Mario around right at the start so it saves over a second rather than doing it twice (once to turn around and another to boost him off the slide for the shortcut). So it might be faster that way, but I'd have to test it. I would have to move Mario to the side to trigger the turnaround, which loses some time since he won't be moving in a straight line so I don't know. thanks for the help

Eagerly awaiting the finished product! What's the likelihood of you doing a 70 or 120 star run after this?
Do not try to bend the spoon, that's impossible. Instead only try to realize the truth. What Truth? There is nospoon. Then you will see it is not the spoon that changes, it is only yourself

That's not what I meant, the way you turned around was good, but the part after that where you take the shortcut could have been better. Watch this vid to see what I'm talking about: http://speeddemosarchive.com/demo.pl?Mario64_Slide_Shortcut_124 Edit: Judging from checkpoints I compared, I'd estimate that 12.8 is possible with turning around the way you did but doing the shortcut better.

Just registered to comment on a wonderful job spezzafer is doing on his run. He's gotten so far in only a couple of days, and it's already looking excellent. It's fitting how the first emulated run that is being created is the first N64 game to be done. I'm utterly impressed, and am anxious to see the finished product. It will be awesome to see how you can optimize the MIPS glitch, compared with the console runners. How much do you think you'll break the record time by? Once again, thank you for endeavoring to take this product up. How many re-records have you done so far?

Edit: Here are those TASs, made by Martin: I just found out that the Bowser 3 vid with the big jump across the gap was made by Andrew, not Martin, just the first 2 vids were made by Martin. Btw, I forgot to mention that Martin also made a 1:38.25 TAS of LR 3lap in MK64.

Yep, Bowser's castle, and the Hazy Maze Cave triple wall jump followed by a long jump was a highlight :). (Although, I had a better reaction from watching LeCourer103's 70 star run, especially in Tick Tock Clock and Rainbow Ride, since that was done on a console). Great work, keep it up! :).

Just out of curiosity, what are your controls? Are you using a gamepad?

In the first Bowser stage, is it possible to take the first red coin without pressing the button that triggers the bridge? I was thinking that it maybe is possible to jump out there, and then in again with a kick in the air. But maybe it's too far out for that?

Hey all (I'm the Andrew who made that Bowser3/quickturn video) I'm excited to see a movie rerecording N64 emulator finally! Martin and I have some sweet tricks up our sleeves for Mariokart64... Anywho, spezzafer, great looking run so far, I'm impressed (even noticed a quickturn in Bowser1, not sure if you learned it from my vid but I'm glad to see it used either way). Though I can definitely tell it's a run through rather than a perfectionist run, I think it's a good idea to get something out there and allow us all to give the inevitable criticism. On first viewing mine are: 1. How about some play-around while waiting for the timing on Whomps fortress for the blastaway the corner star? 2. Did you try long-jumping while collecting red coins on Leathal Lava Land? 3. SSL definitely needs help as Fried was commenting, definitely didn't feel like Shining atop the pyramid was optimized but especially need to change to Martin's Talon strat.

Play around, yeah... I was thinking you should do that a little as Bowser's dying. But not just spinning around! I can imagine a future where everybody does that too much and it gets annoying
