FODA, how long is the Shoot to the Island star in bob-omb battlefield in the video you made with the BLJing? If I recall, the only reason this was ignored for 16 star runs was the cannon, but now that it isn't an issue, I think it might be good to replace the slowest star with this one. The other option is to replace the star in LLL so that the runner never even visits the course, but I don't think this would save time, as you go right past the level on the way to HMC. Anybody know off hand what the slowest of the 15 non-required stars is? My guess is the first star in WF, but I'm probably wrong. Anybody feel like doing any timing?

that star was just a little slower than using the cannon. but what is the point of discussing this now? unless someone wants to work on the 16 stars run now... I'll work on it anyway after this one is finished. But first I gotta finish this.

I wish people would stop nagging FODA about his runs. Give the guy a break here. Let him finish the 120 star run first. That is the one I am most anxious about. Forgive this outburst, but I'm just easily annoyed today.. Keep up the food work FODA, I look forward to seeing the completion of the 120 Star run. :3

If you're talking about jammer01's post, i didn't take it that way, it's just that we only have 1 thread for mario 64 (well there's the ccless thread) and it can get a little crowded here. Let's just try to keep this organized.

IIRC you must collect a star from shifting sand land, LLL and HMC before you can get the MIPS rabbit. So it wouldn't make a difference anyway.

On the topic of MIPS in the basement the first time, he was there when FODA went down for the first time with ~49 stars and not touched and of those levels, so something's up. It could be the raw star count. On the topic of alternate 16 star routes, not fighting the boss in Whomp's fortress does bad stuff for the whole level. To The Top Of The Fortress won't show up at all. It's believed that skipping Cool Cool Mountain in favour of all 7 stars from Whomp's Fortress would be a time saver. If the Whomp fight is skipped, you must skip at least 2 stars on that level. Can you make them both up?

You're right, I didn't think of that. I'm 99% positive that mips only requires 15 stars and you have to enter the basement from a loading point after you get the 15th star to make mips spawn. This is why your 15th star can't be the toad star. Well, it could be, but you would have to enter and exit a level or leave the basement and come back or something rediculous. FODA is right though, this can wait until somebody begins work on the 16 star run. Just wanted to get the idea out there before I forgot, and it seemed like a good time, because it was relatively quiet in the thread.

I'm sure some of you know and some don't, anyway there's a guy over at SDA who's working on a 120 star single segment run, and he's gotten 2:17 in a test run with deaths and huge mistakes and stuff. He's going for sub 2:15. Sounds extremely fantastic to be just 5 minutes short of FODA's test run.

Yeah, I know. Dragorn is insane! His 2:17 is already 40 min faster than the previous run. Around 27% faster, hehe. That run is going to be great. This one too, of course:D.

I made the 70 star SM64 run a priority to watch as soon as I learnt of it. Same will go for Dragorn's 120 star run when it's done - he's one of the best speedrunners out there - he's also done the incredibly long runs of Banjo-Tooie and Majora's Mask which required insane route planning. Okay, back on topic. How fast is the WIP at the moment? Whatever it is I'm sure the end result will be ridiculous.

Yeah I'm really looking forward to him being done. The 70 star run is so amazingly sick and I imagine this will be kinda similar.

For the moment it is 58 minutes long and has got 64 stars. Last world was LLL. So the next is the maze and the Metal Cap.

I hate to bring the topic back to speed running But I think somewhere along the lines dragorn said sub 2:05 was possible. I dunno if he'll pull that off but I imagine the TAS should be able to do that.

That would be insane! But in my opinion even the 2:17 is insane as it is a speedrun. For the TAS I expect an easy sub-2:00. I hope FODA will finish this somewhen. For this TAS I have very very much patience although I can't wait to see the finished result.

- i've already measured and it's not faster to do any of the 100 coins in the 16 star run. so no, don't get all stars in whomp's fortress. - 2:17 is pretty awesome for a speedrun. - this TAS should be about 1:50 long. - i'll get back to working on this in 3 weeks or so.

This doesn't add up to me, especially since seeing FODA's wips and how spectacular they are. Maybe the guy is just insanely skilled. Guess we'll see.

If you saw the 70 star run, some people actually thought it was a TAS because they couldn't believe it was a single segment speed run.

Did you notice???? 64 PAGES!!!! Given this situation... NrgSpoon>"This means the run will probably be done once the thread reaches 120 pages"
"Genuine self-esteem, however, consists not of causeless feelings, but of certain knowledge about yourself. It rests on the conviction that you — by your choices, effort and actions — have made yourself into the kind of person able to deal with reality. It is the conviction — based on the evidence of your own volitional functioning — that you are fundamentally able to succeed in life and, therefore, are deserving of that success." - Onkar Ghate

Let's see... this topic began early in Janurary '05. It's now July '06. That is 19 months. This is the 64th page, and it took 19 months to get this far. So, theorically, to get to the 120th page, it would take about 17 to 18 more months at this rate. And in 64 pages, only 58 out of 120 stars has been obtained. That is almost half the total stars. Again, at this rate it will take 19 to 20 months at this rate. Gee, more than a year to go 'till the 120-star run is fully completed. Sigh... (Of course, I'm just being sacrastic. But I'd be surprised if it actually came true...)

No, 64 pages and 64 stars and the run lasts 58 minutes until now.

I also remember when the guy who did that stuff saw some of the real TAS stuff he was quite disheartened, and his run is one of the very best SDA has to offer.

I read that topic at SDA, and this is a real shame. I've never been concerned about speedruns vs TASes and that whole debate, but it really sucks that Jacob lost interest in speedruning after watching the TAS. I mean the 70 star run is ridiculous, I'd have loved to see more from him.
