Ok, I loved it before, but that bowser level was just pure awesome. There's FODA's magic.

oh man, I really REALLY loved your Bowser level. That was just so fabulous! I must watch it again ;) The first star in Hazy Maze Cave was also very nice. I can't wait to see more of your work.
Which run should I encode next? :)

I would like to see this progress, but wrong ROM-version doesn't allow me to do so. I have two legal game carts and I'm not asking if anyone could PM me a way of getting the correct ROM... ?:/

Here is a small part of the run so far which I did to test out how avi recording would work out. http://dehacked.2y.net/ninja_mario64.zip

the test run is now complete: click here I know a lot of things look really sloppy, like the stair glitch but remember this is just a test run and I kind of rushed through that stuff since I was more concerned with the actual levels. I'm most pleased with the Bowser levels and I think one should look to them to see what an N64 TAS is capable of. Although this is a test run, I figured I should at least make it fun to watch so more people will try their own attempts at it. critiques are obviously more than welcome as this is the time when it needs them most...thanks to all who've already commented!

Since timing by frames seems to be a little difficult on N64: from Poweron: 17:34 by SDA timing: 16:32 (!!!) And I had slowdowns in the level before second bowser. I'd say, that was a completely freaking awesome first TAS on mupen.

Just saw it, that was pretty great considering how fast you did it. The bowser levels were amazing, I also loved how you throw him turning only for 180 degrees on the first two battles. Couple of things I think you can improve on: in the fortress, if you're going to use the cannon for star 5, I'd say do this one before star 6. Then you can do star 6 the faster way (myles vid Michael Fried posted earlier) instead of waiting for the rotating platform, even if the way you did it didn't slow it down that much. Also, it seems to me that bypassing the first door with the rabbit is faster using the new way (merge with the door while dropping the rabbit), but I have no way of testing so I'm not sure. I was also surprised that you dropped the 2nd star in hazy maze, it didn't look like the slowest to me, but you probably checked that. I'd advise you to discuss with myles, Curtis Bright, Lecoureur and Holy Moly before you try another TAS, as they probably know faster strats than the one on their videos. Other than that, solid stuff, liked it very much *grabs some food and watches it again*

Brilliant work. It wants me to get back to my 120 star run I started however many weeks ago re-recording was made possible. Did you use a mouse for the analog stick the whole time or what? I'm guessing you changed the sensitivity for when you just wanted to turn around etc.

Bravo!!! The third Bowser level was hillarious. I loved that jump + jump-kick to the rotating platform!! That was the moment of the run! Thank you so much for providing the first even TAS N64 run! I hope it gets accepted just for a first ever submission's sake!! GOOD JOB!!! :)

I think I saw a few places where a strategy from the 70-star run would've been faster (especially the whomp's fortress tower top one). And I'm pretty sure there are faster stars that can be used to replace some of these, probably making use of the yet-undiscovered tricks for this game which almost certainly exist. But it was really great to see anyway, especially the bowser levels with so many consecutive high-risk maneuvers.

I'm not sure what you mean by this. The number of frames in this movie divided by 60 is 17 minutes and ~32 seconds, which is the length of the movie and what it says in the Play Movie dialog.

Actually, this is accurate emulation of how the real N64 slows down in exactly the same place.

Oh that was just so amazing! The Bowser levels were the best! :) I did notice few mistakes but they were so minor that I don't care about them so much. (For example in Dire Dire Docks you should swim streight to the cave in the beginning, not just down and then to the cave.) I know this is just a testrun but I seriously think you should submit this. (I really hope you do.)

I agree (despite that it will probably be improved on), but all that will have to wait until it's possible to correctly output AVI's from Mupen64 movies. Which I wish hadn't turned out to be as tricky as it has been....

*applauds* I finaly got my emulator to work properly thanks to nitsuja. I forgot that one could rename that dll file. :) The run was amazing. Very much cool tricks. A ninja Mario for sure. I think that in a 120 star run will see alot of these tricks. And I have to agree that the Bowser levels were the best indeed.

I haven't watched the vid yet so I don't know if you did it better or worse than this, but here's a vid of the mips trick by Bright. I think this is the fastest known strategy. http://rapidshare.de/files/6750652/MIPS_Trick.wmv.html Also, here's an Amazing Emergency Exit vid by Myles. I'm not if this is faster or slower than Lecoureur's strategy. http://rapidshare.de/files/6750931/Myles___Amazeing_Emergency_Exit_-_13_Seconds.wmv.html Btw, for the first 2 stars in Whomp's Fortress, have you tried doing a triple jump like Myles does instead of jumping in the tree? Also try hitting the fire in the basement on the way to LLL to make you run faster. Edit: At the very end, maybe you can start running towards the big star before Bowser's message appears and then you'll have full speed already after the message.

My comments are equivilant to what Fried just posted, in addition, I noted the following: Did you try climbing up the back of Bowser's sub rather than causing the stairs to appear? When throwing Bowser on your Bowser 1 and 2, would it be faster to spin a bit further and throw him at the next bomb? I think it would be, the added speed would allow him to avoid sliding towards the bomb first stair warp glitch look sub-optimal because you flew back towards the TTC entrance. I have seen players get caught up in the door so they do not fly so far. In Bowser 3, I noticed that the first near vertical hill you took poorly, if you land on that slightly less inclined part first, Mario will run faster (in general that sort of incline allows Mario to run extremely fast and keep running extremely fast until he hits a flat again). Also, I think you could have forced Bowser to land in a better spot for you to be in a good position for the large star... I have seen a video where the player was directly under the final star when it appeared. *Note, I'm currently uploading a video I made of your run so we can analyze it further by rewinding and such, I'll post the link here when it is done* Here is the movie: http://www.people.virginia.edu/~avw6s/random/Mario64_TAS.wmv I did this using hypercam, hence the low quality and jitteriness... is the Mupen avi capture option supposed to work? I coudln't get it to. btw, my computer is a dual-core AMD Athlon64 X2 and X800 videocard... so the low quality is due to hypercam sucking, not my comp... also, sorry for the unedited nature of me finding the ROM at the beginning, skip past that junk.

Awesome fantastic run! Truely I can't wait for the 70- and 120-star runs! Another thought hit me. When visiting Yoshi (or getting ridicoulus many lives somehow) Mario will gain extra powers. Could this be of any help? I don't know much about it because everytime I get to Yoshi I'm pretty bored of playing the game but Mario will sparkle and stuff when jumping (perhaps triple jump). Does it do any difference in jumping skills or speed or is it more of a cool effect and a bonus for finding Yoshi and that you have got all 120 stars? Anyhow, even though I have never succeded Yoshi should be reachable without the cannon, right? IF this could save any time somehow I guess it's better in the 70- and 120-star run, but then again it might just be wasted time?

You should try Camtasia. It's very good recording program. Atleast comparet to HyperCam. And btw, thx for making .wmv of the run so it's easier to watch it :)

Yoshi doesn't appear till you have 120 stars, you can get up to the castle room from either side, but Yoshi won't be there till you're done with the game.

If someone does the 120 star run, and decides to when get the vanish cap, it MAY, be beneficial to get the extra-hop from Yoshi, if there is a shortcut that can be found using the extra hop. Wait, do you even get the extra hope when you visit Yoshi? Or is Yoshi even on the roof? IIRC he isn't even on the roof...

Ahaa. Since I never got up there without the cannon I figured he'd be around even if you hadn't got all the 120 stars. Hmm, but this extra powers are gained from many lives, right? I don't know when the powers starts to kick in but I know that I have died a few times (10 perhaps) and still have got the powers. So perhaps one just need "only" 50 lives or something? If it would help there might be worth picking up 1-up mushrooms along the way? Or maybe they are just out of path for a TAS.

I think you get the extra power after you get 120 stars, and visit Yoshi.

So it has nothing to do with many lives? Crap. Anyhow, I'm starting to get really exciting about this though. This test run was amazing! I can't imagine how a full run would look like. Another idea struck me, but I don't know this. Would it be faster to get a star in the Snowland instead of perhaps the Sandland? Maybe sliding inside the house or floating to the last star that normally requires wall kicks?
