Or you could have just recommended getting FFDshow and Winamp, that's what I use and the videos work just fine. Sometimes you need VLC Player for certain other files.

Ok, I know I've like NEVER posted on this site, but I would really like to contribute an audio commentary to the site if possible, even if it's just one. I watched the Ocarina of Time run accompanied by JXQ's commentary and I think it made it so much more enjoyable to watch. So, I tried messaging Bisqwit about it more than 24 hours ago but I haven't gotten a response yet, so I decided to try and do like the first 20 minutes or so to see if anyone thought it was worth finishing. I was gonna just go ahead and do the full-length, but I didn't want to go through too much disappointment! I mean, I don't expect it to be as exciting as a commentary for a more exciting action game, so I think that it will be a little more lax since Earthbound is mostly a fairly laid-back game while watching it. If anyone is interested, here's a link to download it - http://files-upload.com/161583/Earthboundteaser.mp3.html You have to wait until the counter stops at the bottom, and then it turns into a downloadable link for the .mp3. I made it using Audacity and even though it doesn't sound as good as I had hoped it would I still think it's OK. I was afraid that maybe after posting this everyone would want to try and do the same thing so I hope I'm not bringing an unwanted trend, but I think that commentaries are really only worth doing for the longer TAS videos and make them not feel quite so, um... lonely for the viewer at times. So, either reply here or feel free to PM me or mail me at NapstrPSX@gmail.com to tell me what you think. Like I said, I am more than willing to do a full-length commentary and would love to have it on the site, but if that's not possible and people still want me to finish it I can try to find a place to host it elsewhere, and permanently, I just didn't have time to arrange that before going to bed tonight. (I have to go to work every morning at 7 a.m.) Thank you for your time! Sorry I am not here more frequently but I love TAS videos and have great respect for everyone on the site. I would like to show my face around and get to know everyone better. And seriously, I think I sound SO much different than this .mp3. OK, I just finished listening to it and I can be MUCH more animated and entertaining. I am pretty tired and I just didn't feel that comfortable because I don't know many people. If you think it would be worth listening to with a better mic and better voice then I will could maybe send another segment or if I find a good enough setup I may just go ahead and do a full commentary and post it or something. Much appreciation to anyone who took the time to listen and I already know of plenty I could improve on. PEACE!

Could you post the link to that OOT commentary perchance? Not to piss on your parade or anything :P edit: also, I'd just like to lend my support for commentaries of this type in general. I've always been a fan of dvd commentaries, it's always fascinating to hear more about the science behind the scenes. I haven't played any earthbound games, it's a series I missed out on, but I'm glad to see more commentaries like JXQ's being made

I guess I'll be the first to comment on your commentary. ^^ I really liked it, and I would be more than happy to see a complete commentary (All 3 hours and 27 minutes worth + whatever you have to say after the video is over). As for the criticism, well here goes: - The opening parts up to the death of Buzz Buzz was fine, but your references to JXQ's commentary (and there are some parts which sounded a bit like what he said) made me feel for a while that this was just an imitation commentary* (which it's not! as I found out ^^) * Since it's not, I would suggest not taking it out, since it also advertises a bit for the other run. =) Not to mention viewers that watched the other run can/will relate the things you say to what JXQ says too. - I'm not sure if you plan on redoing the first twenty minutes if you DO make a complete commentary, but I would suggest taking out some things such as the fact you are new/a lurker since you don't want to be permanently known as a lurker to TASvideos however much later people download the commentary/video. =] - I liked the parts where you explained briefly about luck manipulation (although you didn't use those terms) and how it works/how we abuse it. - I also liked how you shared your experience with it, and your thoughts on particular events so as we can relate to it a bit, or perhaps laugh alongside. :) I often found myself smiling/chuckling at the times you laughed too, so don't worry about your sense of humour; it's fine. :) Like you, I'm slightly incoherent so I may have accidentally mistyped something and thus have a different implication, but I overall, thoroughly enjoyed your commentary and give you my support. Good luck~! ^^b Edit: Would you happen to play CS by the way? You sound an awful like this one guy whose team I was a ringer for..

Hey I don't know about other people but for me it's a wanted trend! It's also not like some one who is not interested has to listen anyway so it can't really be a bad thing. May check this one out later, though I never played Earthbound myself or saw the run.

Well, I thought it was a good idea, and it even made me feel like I wanted to do one myself, but I don't think I would be able to dedicate 3 hours straight to it, and it would be redundant to have another commentary for the same game, obviously. I thought that overall it was pretty good. As for your voice and the microphone, I listen to some podcasts and listening to this commentary really reminded me of listening to those podcasts. So there's nothing wrong there with the sound. If you do go into making the whole commentary for the game, there'll be less time spent about commenting on the fact that you've been a lurker in the forums and such, so it would probably be good to point out things in the game and how it's played more specifically. Like certain lines in the game might pass over people's head if they're not paying attention specifically to them, and there's some subtlety that takes a moment to pause and think about that viewers might not catch with the fast text, so those would be good to point out. A few examples of what I'm talking about include Strong's comment about how kids should be playing Nintendo games and the irony of how the game tells you that Ness found a present, and in the present there was a bomb, and things like that. That detail also happens on the way to Saturn Valley, so small quirks like that are good to point out. And since a lot of details in the game are skipped you can go over some of them, like the spots where the camera man and his fuzzy pickles are skipped, and how the teleport spell is supposed to work. And you can go more into the mechanics of what's going on, like explaining that each time the cursor is moved in a battle the random number generator changes to affect what happens in the round, and how it also changes each frame when the game is semipaused with B. But anyway, I'm just adding in suggestions since 3 hours is a long time, so there'll always be room for filler. I've watched the run straight through 3 or 4 times now (yeah, I'm crazy), but I'd watch it again if you make your full commentary. So I look forward to it! =)

Agreed, contributions like this are most welcome. I haven't listened to this commentary and I'll leave that to others, but posting about it on the forums is certainly the right way to go. Sorry that I haven't responded to the e-mail. EDIT: Listened to it now (together with the AVI). I'm not a good judge of commentaries, but it was ok. Better than nothing. :) And there was absolutely nothing wrong with the microphone. But as JXQ says, the bitrate could be lower, resulting in a significantly smaller file as well.

I'm back, and thanks for the responses! Well, like I said I already know of a lot of things I could improve on. Sometimes I said, 'uh' or 'and stuff' a bit too much. So, I will definitely be doing a full-length for this soon, definitely within the week. I shouldn't have any trouble feeling confident next time I do this, I'm just gonna go for it and just use my personal humor. Vidar, sorry, but I've actually never played CS so I guess it wasn't me. =( If anyone has anything else to say I'd like to hear and I'll be thinking up until when I do this about making it as best I can. If I finish this I would maybe like to do one more commentary, but I don't know, I'd probably just be satisfied with doing Earthbound. :D

Haven't had a chance to listen to it yet, but I downloaded the file and checked it out briefly. You can greatly reduce the size of the file by making it mono instead of stereo, and by lowering the bitrate from 128 kbps to something like 32 kbps (or maybe even 24 kbps). Voice doesn't need too high of a sampling rate to sound accurate. I think a program like Audacity has these capabilities (though if I'm wrong, someone else jump in and correct me).

Funny thing, I have plans to contribute to the site with commentaries of my own, Earthbound being one of the games that I have planned. (That is, once I get off my arse and buy a mic.) Don't worry though; after listening to your commentary, it sounds like we have two entirely different styles, and thus two different things to bring to the table. I'm with CoolBumpty on talking more about the game itself, but overall I thought what you posted was pretty good. Here's hoping you're willing to finish it all. ^_^

I am honored to see someone wanting to comment on one of my runs! (don't worry, I haven't forgotten about you, Nitrodon) You have my full support on this commentary thing. In fact, I can't wait to hear what someone else has to say about it. By the way, I just sent you an email at the address you gave in your first post with all my contact information, in case you want to have a little chat, ask me questions about the run or anything else really. Can't wait to hear the final result :) EDIT: It was actually the first time I heard someone say my nickname in English. You can call me Hal. Not that I didn't like hearing my nickname... but I prefer Hal. You could like .. say it completely once in the beginning and mention that you're going to call me Hal for the rest or something .. :)

"When there's not excitement, there's me and you. You. Listening to me." <3 Your microphone is fine, it picks up your voice well, and there isn't any background noise to speak of. If the "pops" from your P syllables or "wind" from breathier noises bother you, they can be stopped by a pop filter. However, you can make your own pop filter quite easily out of anything cloth that can be held in front of the microphone. For example, I once used a pair of shorts hung on a hanger and duct taped to the top of two pieces of furniture, and it worked quite well.

Hey just wanted to let those who are interested know that I just got done mailing back halamantriel, so when it comes time to record the commentary I should have some personal bits from him added in on several things in the run and be able to point out everything that's note-worthy. I'm not sure if it will be an uninterrupted single segment or not (I doubt it) but if I do take a break or two it'll all be seamed together and shouldn't de-synch the commentary with the video. I don't think I'll have near as much non-game commentary pushed in like that when I do it, I won't be in any rush and I'll try to not detract too much from the entertainment of the TAS, yet talk enough so there's not too much silence. I am shooting for doing the recording sometime early Saturday, so maybe if all goes well I can have it up by the end of the day. I'll take your advice, JXQ, about shrinking the filesize down some by lessening the quality and I'm going to experiment with some stuff to see if I can make any subtle improvements. I am really looking forward to this! Seriously, I'm really excited about this and I want to say thanks for the support. I think it will turn out good and I hope everyone enjoys it. Like I said, I don't know if I'll be interested in doing anymore as I know there may be others that are thinking about doing this kind of thing and I don't want to take any possible openings away and I don't want to do a commentary for something that somebody else wants to do. I'll definitely come posting back when I'm finished or if I have any important updates or unexpected delays or anything like that. By the way, does anyone know of a better place that I could host the file, or is the site that I used Ok? I just tried to find something that worked, I've never tried to host anything that big before but it worked out pretty good considering it's free - and it says that it stays up for up 6 months after last download. Goodnight, everybody!

I had some issues with trying to find the link on that hosting site, but I managed to get it just fine with the "get all using FlashGet" option on IE. I recommend Megaupload or Sendspace, but it's up to you. Best wishes on your commentary. ^_^

NapstrPSX how come your avatar is so big? Anyways, just so that I'm not too off topic I'll just say that it was nice to hear JXQ eat a peanut butter & jelly sandwich. At least now we know he is human. Edit: Its a good thing that i'm not a fan of Occarina since JXQ basically crushes the game in terms of dumping a load of crap on it but i must admit that i laughed my ass off a couple of times. He simply says it like it is. Many things that he brought up were true like the dialogs being long, the annoying low hp sound and Ganon being butt ugly.

Forget being offtopic... I don't see why his avatar is "so big". The rules say it's too big (80x80), but for me, it is not large enough to cause any additional space to be wasted (there is still a good 30 pixels of vertical space to waste or so). I always though 80x80 was rather small myself. (I would listen to the commentary, but I will wait for the full version. :P)
