So in trying to set up an actual goal for myself in my quest to obsolete old runs, I looked at the list and saw that only 36 7 of the first 500 published runs are left to be obsoleted. Looking them over, I didn't think there were any that were unsurpassable technical achievements. So I thought what I might do is make a project out of updating these runs, given that there is a lot of recent activity in the list by others besides me. I would say my overall goal here is for the list of 'longest non-obsoleted runs' to represent runs that are solid enough that they aren't likely to be improved, rather then just being old. So if you are interested in taking on one of these runs please post here, I will try and keep this list updated. I think many of these should be somewhat easy, although there are certainly some challenges in there too. I want to improve some of those runs. Like the Battletoads 1P run, the Lololo 2 "Pro Levels" run and... that's about it if MUGG doesn't want to improve the Kirby Super Star one.

Keep knocking out those NES runs Alyosha, and you'll end up almost a shoe-in for the NES TASer of the year award! There's quite a few I would like to see improved/updated on here, especially Lagoon. Don't quite have the time (or the laptop...) to work on any, though.

I've looked into a few of these before. There are some improvement WIPs scattered about the game threads if anyone wants a starting point: I vaguely remember Ferret Warlord was working on StarTropics 2 and had some progress up, but I'm not sure where that was going. Omni was working on improving his Lagoon run a while back, though he might be just a little too busy for it now. There was a seriously hype Kirby Super Star improvement being worked on by some Japanese TASers... Does anyone know the status of it? Would this project benefit from something more actively collaborative, like a Skype chat or a dedicated IRC room?

I didn't really have anything formal in mind beyond this thread, but I'm certainly willing to team up with anyone who wants to work on one of these. Especially some of the longer ones, as runs of more than an hour or so seem much more rare recently.

I was thinking more along the lines of the main IRC channel or some of the smaller game-specific Skype groups that get talked about every now and then, since this is a pretty large scale project that'll have a lot of people working on different runs. It could just be a hub of WIP sharing, team formation, and instant feedback. It's just a fleeting thought of mine, though. I'd work on Star Ocean if I didn't have so much on my plate already...

@samsara: I think that would be a good idea. Well, if more people are interested in taking on runs. Right now its just my pipe dream, so it would be a pretty lonely channel. 8D I found a trick in Jackie Chan that looks like it will save about a second in the river level, so looks like that is the next target!

It's still going, but slowly. I was almost finished with it before I realized I committed the mistake of failing to read the topic, forcing me to restart since there were some tricks in there I didn't know about. Having to undo several months of progress on a 53 minute movie does a number on one's morale and motivation, y'know? Right now, I'm about halway through the pyramid, and I'm already further ahead of my previous run than my first run was ahead of Sami's, so it's shaping up very well. Incidentally, thank you, Samsa, for posting this, as it gave me the incentive and motivation to push past a room that stumped my for nearly a month now.

Hey, I'm not sure how you would check quickly, but with the introduction of vault, several TASes that were submitted from way back but were rejected were accepted and published. So if you want more ideas, those could work too.

421 and 422 are basically Playaround TASes, aren't they? Without looking, I don't believe they optimize for speed.

The Street Fighter ones? Those can still be obsoleted if someone makes more entertaining movies for them.

A few years ago I tried to make an arcade SF2:TWW playaround run, using glitches like handcuffs and all the other things Guile can do, invisible Dhalsim, player vs player fights, etc., although I never got far with it. A good playaround/glitchfest would probably be able to obsolete both SNES runs.

Good point, I didn't consider that in thinking up this project. I think I have more then enough to keep me busy though. If I ever make any substantial progress in this project, surely those street fighter runs will be saved for last, entertainment is not my strong suit.

If anyone wants to work on Kirby Superstar, I have the latest SMVs for any% and 100% for snes9x 1.43 (from 2010 or so). E: In Dragonball Advance Adventure you can use general optimization and manipulate for better spawns in battles. You can divekick as long as you want rather than over and over.

Y'know, now that I think about it, Wizards & Warriors 3 might be a good candidate for some gamebreaking bugs, whatwith how the levitation staff seems to occasionally screw things up some.

'[396] SNES Secret of Evermore (USA v1.0) "100%" by Saturn in 2:04:06.12 ' When TheAngryPanda finishes his Secret of Evermore TAS (last I heard he was on the final boss), it won't be the same category but it'll be a modern, fully up to date TAS of this game. (And really, it'll be such a huge difference it should probably cross-category obsolete it)

In the specific case of Double Dragon, there's actually wildly different games with the same name. The Genesis version, if I recall correctly, has a lot in common with the Commodore 64 version of all things, and both have levels that aren't in the NES version (and vice versa). There's no general rule though. Usually you go for the most complete version (in the case where some versions have more content than others) and/or the "best" version (in the case where some versions have worse graphics/sound/framerate/etc.).

There isn't really a set rule for this. If the port is practically identical to the original game, then I would say they could obsolete each other. Then again, we do have separate runs for games like Super Mario Advance 2 which plays very similarly to the original game (SMW), so the barrier for considering a port a different game is not that big.

^ I'm not sure what you mean by that. Flashback is published hurray! I noticed FatRatKnight's WIP too, surprisingly large improvement. Unfortunately I think all the really easy ones are done. I tried looking at kabuki Quantum Fighter and so far can't save even 1 frame. Maybe I will try Wizards and warriors 3 next.

My Rad Racer TAS is published now. We can knock one off that list now. EDIT: Seems you got it already. Gauntlet has a complete WIP, only awaiting time needed for me to do some write-ups. I will skip them if it takes me to next month to finish, submitting whatever I've got. On subject of "not actually the first 500 but close" would be #535 Soul Blazer. I've started on improvements a while back, but haven't actually stuck with it. The thread, in case you want to find it. Thought I'd mention it since this topic is about obsoleting rather old movies.

^Nice work on those by the way. I looked at Rad Racer myself briefly but couldn't get much out of it. Looking forward to seeing gauntlet in the submissions. Won't be too long before we are under 30 runs left!
