Main Comments:

After battling with a day of de-syncs, I finally managed to improve the any% run. This movie is 00:00.33 faster than the previous run due to a new thing which is detailed in the level by level comments.
  • ROM used: Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee (USA) V1.0.bin
  • Recommended Emulator: PCSXRR-1.3f (Feos's Abe fix)
  • BIOS used: SCPH1001.bin
  • Graphics plugin: TAS GPU Plugin
  • Sound Plugin: TAS Sound Plugin
  • Controller used: Segu DriectPad Pro 0.4

Here is a list of glitches that we used:

Death Delay

Often abbreviated as DDG once Abe jumps or rolls into an explosive, it makes Abe invisible and can corrupt his sprite. This glitch will allow Abe to get past things that would kill him. Abe's sprite will show up after entering a door and wells will cancel this glitch. Abe will die if he falls of a ledge or gets zapped. A video made by Sligfantry can show you how this glitch works:

Auto Turn Delay

This glitch works by standing on the edge of the ledge and pressing the down button quickly and run towards a spot where you would like to hoist down. You will need to press either 'left/down' or 'right/down' depending on which direction Abe was facing.

Stop 'n' Turn

By timing this glitch perfectly you can make Abe stop and turn. Combing it with the auto turn glitch above a ledge you will be able to make Abe do a backwards jump. This will allow you to jump backwards to areas and skip Zulags. In a 100% run it will allow you to get to secret areas quicker and it skips a section of StockYards Escape after finishing the secret area. Sligfantry's video can show you how this glitch works: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DIo1TJUBGlo

Multiple Backwards Jump

Whilst performing a backwards jump, simply press up/jump and Abe will do a multiple backwards jump and in this run Abe will use it to skip Zulag 3 to get to Zulag 4.

Diagonal fall

This is done by combining the stop turn and the auto turn glitch. It is used as a time saver in Monsaic Lines and to save a frame in RuptureFarms.

Early Bird Portal Closure

This run contains a new glitch which saves a few frames. You can free the Mudokon a few frames earlier than a normal rescue. Here is the before and after video on how it looks when using the glitch.

Level by level Improvements

Stockyards Return

As discovered in my PC any% run, it is faster to jump whilst the next screen is loading.

Samlaptop: Uploading Temporary encode to YouTube. Will take some time.

Yea, Okay. Desync. Loads up normal PCSXrr v0.1.3 And the normal version syncs.

It syncs alright for me on the f version.

The link for the Youtube encode seems to be incorrect. The correct link is https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lYlrhfcV6Ak

...So why is this improvement slower than the published run? [2620] PSX Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee by Samtastic & Dooty in 12:06.13

The old run is 43568 frames. This run is 43584. So it's .33 seconds slower. I think someone got so excited that they got their math backwards.

So...does the trick actually save time and this was a mistake, or that trick ended up being slower?

I show you how deep the rabbit hole goes. Current projects: NES: Tetris "fastest 999999" (improvement, with r57shell) Genesis: Adventures of Batman & Robin (with Truncated); Pocahontas; Comix Zone (improvement); Mickey Mania (improvement); RoboCop versus The Terminator (improvement); Gargoyles (with feos)

This trick can save at least 2 frames but it causes desyncs along the way. I am trying my hardest to get these frames saved at least.

2 is a big drop from the 20 mentioned in the submission text.

I need feos to update his pcsx-f link on his site as I also have desync problems with every movie file I have and it happens even with Abe's Exoddus!

If you only have a projected frame savings of 2 frames, it might be better to wait for Bizhawk to have PSX support - if it's less desync prone, you'll save a LOT of time.

But with bizhawk, will we be able to import frame data from our PCSX movie into pshawk movie data? It would be great to be able play our current published PCSX runs on bizhawk.
