Adventure Time - Hey Ice King! Why'd You Steal Our Garbage?!! is a DS game based on the popular show, Adventure Time. It steals...uh, I mean, borrows the gameplay from Zelda 2, only with an item system. It was made by Wayforward, who also made Shantae. You know, that half genie hero.
I started work on this project over a year ago, and restarted over 6 times due to more and more improvements being found. I can certainly say it is fully optimized after all that.
  • Bus level Timing enabled
  • recompiler disabled
  • Takes damage to save time
  • Dies to save time
  • idk something catchy
This TAS beats the RTA WR by 31 minutes, thanks to a variety of glitches that'll be explained below.

Glitches and Tricks

Sliding

If Finn slides off a ledge at a specific point, the rest of the slide animation will be cancelled. This saves 2 frames for every ledge he slides off of.

Aerial Damage Boosting

Normally whenever Finn takes a hit, he'll be immediately sent to the ground and you'll only gain about 2 frames from the boost. However, if Finn takes damage while he's traveling upwards, for example from an enemy above him, he'll get the full boost. But that's not all.

Damage Window

While in the air, Finn will have a 1 frame window to do anything he'd like. This includes jumping, but more importantly sliding. Thus you can gain an additional frame from each boost.

Item Jumping

The biggest glitch in the run, Item Jumping is activated by having Finn jump, and then 1-5 frames later have him use an item. He'll use the item, and there will be a 1 frame window where he can jump again. This can be chained with yet another item, effectively meaning infinite height for as many items as Finn has.
It's uses are incredibly numerous, but a few brief, important uses:
  • Entering Marceline's dungeon the reverse way, thus skipping a boss, two upgrades, and a fetch quest. Saves over 8 minutes.
  • Chaining items after going fast from a wind current, thus preserving momentum.
  • Numerous areas where the Jake Roll or Jake Glide would be needed.
  • Cancelling item animations for the final Ice King fight.

Slide Scooting

An odd glitch arises if you slide a frame before the normal window of sliding begins. This has Finn scoot across the ground, and it can be chained forever if you press slide every other frame. Normally this would be useless, but it was discovered that it can be used to bypass air currents. This skips a detour to get the Ear Shield, saving 50 seconds right off the bat. It also saves a few frames from then on, as the Ear Shield animation is slow to get out of.

Ice Slide Scooting

A variation of Slide Scooting, scooting on ice propels Finn forward very quickly. It can even be jumped out of and preserve the momentum from it.

Fist Smash Animation Cancel

Sometimes when Finn uses the Jake Fist, you can cancel the delay that comes afterwards from it. Used sporadically, as it's not always possible.

Death Cancel

Using an item while Finn is dead, but before his dying animation finishes, lets Finn survive. This is used exactly once to bypass a skeleton.

General Notes

Boss Strategies

Donnie

Attack, attack, attack.

Chainsaw Bear

Same as Donnie, also manipulated a ton of items I needed from the Lance Rabbits.

Gunter

Bouncing on his head keeps him in the left corner, making it easy.

Marauder Leader

skipped

Marceline

The Enchirideon instantly kills her, skipping a very long fight.

Ice King Phase 1

Using an Nightosphere Amulet gives Finn 20 damage per attack, killing him in 7 hits.

Ice King Phase 2

With the Tiger Claw, Vorpal Hand, and Nightosphere Amulet, Finn attacks slightly faster then normal, and deals 30 damage per attack. That makes it just barely possible to deal 150 damage every time he slams his fist down, killing him easily.

Lumpy Space Princess

200 hits kills her. I take damage to avoid dodging around.

Possible Improvements

-Possibly better item manipulation, but manipulation in general is very rigid in this game.

For a more serious post: This was really fun to watch! All the item jump sequence breaks were cool and the item management looked really well done. There were some laugh out loud moments as well: That stage transition glitch got me nearly every time. The downtime between the exciting parts was pretty minimal, I didn't find myself getting bored at all. And yes, the encode is nice too. Voted Yes! I do wonder if those Habaneros in the Cave Dungeon could've been saved and used in longer sections, though... I'm assuming both of them were needed to clear gaps and it was faster to do that than to manipulate more item drops?

I notice you use up all your items to perform a long jump at 12:20, but this doesn't seem too major a skip and you seem to spend more time farming replacements latter on than this jump saves. Did I miss anything?

The reason all items are used here is because of the air current. Doing item jumping over and over preserves speed from the air current, saving roughly over 20 seconds compared to doing the level normally with jumping.

That was fun to watch! Nice to see what an Adventure Time game run looks like; once either Citra or Xenia is developed enough, the other ones can be TASed too. Yes vote!
