This randomly occurs when attempting to load a state while recording. Does anyone know what causes it?

Only if there is a stable way to reproduce. Or maybe you could run a compiled fceux in debug mode and post the callstack when this happens?

I try to generalize them and turn into something clear and reusable. I hate depending on unpredictable and having to make lottery guesses. Any problem can be solved by systems thinking and acting.

You mean it's never happened to you? Sigh... Okay, I have no idea how to reproduce it deterministically, but it usually happens to me on Shadow Man's stage in Rockman 3 and this romhack of it. (The screenshot shows the Doc Robot version of the level in the vanilla game.) Try recording a movie in that stage, spamming the load-state key, and see if a crash occurs.

Can you try compiling in Visual Studio?
