i thought you're supposed to break the barrel, then jump on the last frame of the barrel breaking animation. that worked for me, but i haven't gotten the other stuff to work, like canceling mario's jump and getting the exact commands you do in your tas.

So for some reason Bowser's Castle skip doesn't work sometimes even when you never saved your game (which was thought to be the condition for it to work). This happened in an emulator test and it happened to Biospark, but I can't figure out why it happens. I think I couldn't even find the timer for the escape way part.. I would appreciate if someone besides me looked into this

The reason why Bowser's castle skip doesn't work sometimes is because of the Toad eating rock in Guffawha ruins. These conditions are now known to make Bowser's castle skip stop working: * Reloading your saved game * Playing the minigame with the Rock (either both bros or one brother) These things will not render the glitch undoable: * Saving your game * Deathwarp * Peach cutscene in Fungitown Of course this means Mush badges can only be obtained if you do the teleport (huge skip) past Trunkle, which means you have to teleport twice in the run. I would rather not have that much item glitching considering the random nature of the glitch is inconsistent and can thus screw you over (as happened at least twice to me). But without mush badges fighting Birdo, Bowletta and Cackletta will become impossibly hard...

you could also skip most of the koopalings (i think you only need to fight 3 or so), but your speed will still be too low for the fawful fight. finding an easier way to do the "big skip" glitch would be ideal, but i don't think that's very likely.

Kurikinton_Sya has made a TAS in 2010ish that went through the whole game glitchless, and then skips Bowser's castle. So something later on or possibly earlier on may affect the glitch again... I will ask him for a savestate.

perhaps it's tied to some sort of "event" memory address and it checks for a certain value or values. and maybe the things you skip would affect this address.

Yeah... but it kinda sucks to play through half of the game and test after each cutscene if it's going to work or fail so I'm not going to check it. After all, having to do the huge skip twice is a huge turn-off.. maybe in a few months I will look at it again, or maybe not. Other games like paper mario or zelda have runners doing all sorts of crazy glitches so maybe I just have to deal with it, just sucks it's a glitch that can randomly fail* though. * I don't know if I explained it here yet but I will now: For the glitched action command, when memory values lead to screen flickering, then there is a slim chance the value will be different (i.e. a counting that was previously 16, 18, 20, may now be 16, 17, 18, 20) and so counting gets messed up. All you really have as a console runner is the screen (the way it looks, glitched) and you count how many times you press L/R, and when counting randomly fails you're stuck and the run dies. Even more a pain in the butt because the run involves 30 minutes of money farming before you ever do the glitches... By the way, the screen flickering differs between emulator and console. I saw one flicker and the other being still, for the exact same situation.

Uh....I'm not familiar with the Mario & Luigi Speedrunning community, but what's the point of doing the entire game glitchless until the end? Entertainment/Speed tradeoff?

Back then glitches weren't really known. And there really is no community right now; There are a few people who have taken a little interest in the game. There is Dragondarch's 3 hour segmented run, and I did a 4 hour RTA (which is a pretty bad time), and I wasn't able to complete a glitched run. If anything the MLSS community is pretty much dead.

at this point it seems like a segmented run using the big skip glitch would be fastest, even if you have to fight the koopalings. for now i think i'm going to route a single-segment run with only barrel clipping.

I think the next best point you can skip to is from the Airport onwards.

He deleted it because it was only a testrun after all. I didn't get a response from him yet; I will look into this again sometime later.

I got a message with the savestate I wanted from Kurikinton_sya in April and completely overlooked it. Now I know the following: - In Kurikinton_sya's TAS, Bowser's Castle skip was possible even though the Rock minigame in Guffawha ruins was played. - I played that minigame, cured Mario and went to the endgame directly and Bowser's castle skip did not work! - That means some other event will influence it. If I had his VBM it would be very easy to find out which events influence it but he wants to keep it private. Maybe I can use one of my own VBMs. - Playing the barrel minigame does not make the Bowser's castle glitch work. My theory is that it is the time-based block in one of Joke's End's last rooms where you have to firedash across the room very quickly. This block might set the timer to "having no time stamp" (whereas events with timers that run down to zero for the event to stop make Bowser's castle skip to not work cause the timer is zero seconds). Unfortunately no good time-based events like the one in Joke's End come to my mind that are en route in the RTA. - Playing the surfing game in the ocean and escaping it will make Bowser's castle skip work! This also works when you save your game and then play that minigame, and then go to Bowser's Castle. This means glitched RTA in this game is possible again at least until Cackletta.

Sorry, but this post will also contain RTA info rather than TAS related information. In today's livestream(s) I played from an empty savegame until Cackletta. I'm really glad that I was able to relearn the glitches and pull them off to go to the final boss (I wasn't able to do it previously). Improvements and changes I want to make for the second testrun (which I want to do soon) include the following: - I want to think about using a better time-based event before Bowser's Castle instead of the surf minigame. - I need many more mushrooms so I need to grind money even more. Instead of 35 minutes I will spend 55 minutes on it. - I will get a mushbadge for Luigi and learn Knockback Bros advanced (43 uses) so I can chain it on the final bosses. This is probably a requirement anyway, because Cackletta's armswing when she is low on health, on the Japanese version, is broken and will always hit you no matter what you do. You probably have to deal chain damage so she never gets to do this attack. - I have to find more items en route. More 1ups and syrups would be helpful. Might also buy those items from money.

I was looking into possible improvements to the TAS today. - Zero Def glitch doesn't work for me, so I'm waiting for more information from the Youtuber. - Going on a detour to Fungitown to get mush badge for Mario. Takes 4.5 minutes. By clipping through the main entrance, it only takes 1.5 minutes. Additionally, since the Rock minigame in Guffawha Ruins isn't entered, no timer event has to be visited to make Bowser's Castle Skip possible, so another 2 minutes is saved (over the 4.5 minute route). Note that most of the info on this post is already outdated. Item plan
Everything marked * is collected in 2012TAS.

HIGE was never upgraded in 2012TAS.
- M HIGE 13
    L HIGE 11

- I have
[$40, 11mush, 1 Maxnut, 3 Syrup, 1 1up, 1 1updx, 1 herb,
2 PeaBadge(e), 1 BeanBadge]

- Stats at this point
[54 MPOW, 13MHIGE, 50 LPOW, 11 LHIGE]

- Mushbadge costs 238
  Mushroom costs 19 (at 19MHIGE 18)
  Supermush costs 48
  Syrup costs 23 (at 17MHIGE 22)

- Maxnut sells for 91
  Syrup sells for 6
  1up sells for 18
  1updx sells for 113
  herb sells for 7

Extra mushroom collecting
>>This is the # scenario. I get 11 mush(2012TAS), and then everything marked with # above I get additionally:

26mush 1super 4 oneup 6syrup 39-10coin² 1nut 1herb

>> Testrun additionals: +2mush 1syrup

This implies that I sell only 1 oneup and have 8 coins to buy 2 peabadges
instead of selling 2 oneups and keeping the 8 coins for later.
It doesn't make any difference except that selecting 1 oneup may be faster than selecting 2 (out of 3 or 4) whereas I can select ALL of my oneups in one frame later.

(²note to self: because I have 30 when I arrive in Fungitown, instead of 40(2012TAS).)

***
3.0 BirdoPopple battle takes 1min 46sec
4.0 BirdoPopple battle takes 50sec
It takes 51 sec to get from 2012TAS to 3.0
It takes more than 2min (1min 41sec+6needed mushrooms) to get from 2012TAS to 4.0

3.0: 1min + 46sec + 51sec = 2min 37sec
4.0: 50sec + 2min(+) = 2min 50sec(+)

Therefore, 4.0 mushpower in Birdo Popple isn't worthwhile.

Battle
I have more detailed info in my offline file.
- No syrup needed for BirdoPopple.
Castle town shop
I can conveniently sell MAX syrup (from BirdoPopple) and use my 180 coins (from BirdoPopple) to buy enough mushrooms to get from 4.0 to 5.0.

The plan is complete. I'm going to work on the new TAS soon. Maybe I will do a testrun to make sure the plan isn't flawed. The problem is that I get POW upgraded at all times during testing, but I need Mario and Luigi to acquire +6 HIGE/STACHE. The final boss is cut perfectly, with 190+10 damage, four times to kill Cackletta's heart which has 800 HP. If I have to get HIGE/STACHE instead of POW, I might be short of killing the heart. TODO: - Check the 2 mushrooms,15coins that take 12 seconds. I believe they might take way more time. 12.0 - 2 mushrooms, 15 coins: In fact these take 15.0 so I consider not getting these. EDIT: Unfortunately, this doesn't work out, even with getting 1 extra nut(14coins), 2 extra syrup(14coins), 6 extra coins(6coins = 34). - Check if Mario and Luigi still do sufficient damage if HIGE is upgraded instead of POW (+6 HIGE is needed so mushrooms cost 18 instead of 19 in Fungitown, etc.). If they don't do enough damage anymore, I will not upgrade HIGE. Successful. See "HIGE plan" in above post. - Check if "huge skip" in Teehee Valley can be done while also collecting the items in the same room. EDIT: I cannot do this unfortunately. Mario & Luigi can only tepeport through the wall after they visit the room and do the glitch immediately. If you walk around for a bit, they will only teleport to places they've walked on. I think there is the possibility to still clip through the wall but it is so rare and I couldn't figure out how to do it. So the items (1up, mushroom, 10 coins) in that room will not be gotten. - After the above three checks, I will modify the shop plan once again. And then the plan should be complete for real. - Make a testrun

how do you clip through the main entrance of fungitown? could i see a video/vbm? i'm assuming it uses the same trick as the "big skip"? also, i've been considering using the thwomp game to get extra coins for non-tas runs, but you'd have to reload saves a lot. might just be faster to get coins from hitting luigi. edit: i just got it doing the "big skip" method. hopefully it's not too hard on console...
