Bubsy 3D, A speedrun was shown to me from Awful Games Done Quick and it seemed up my alley after already doing other awful games such as Superman 64! So of course I was ready to take on this challenge!

Game objectives

  • Emulator used: BizHawk 1.11.4 (TAStudio!)
  • Bios: PSX U BIOS (U) PSX BIOS (Version 3.0 11/18/96 A)
    • PSX - SCPH7003.BIN 524288 sha1:0555C6FAE8906F3F09BAF5988F00E55F88E9F30B
  • Aims for fastest time
  • Abuse game physics

Comments

Wall climbing is the only major trick in this game, basically standing at almost any degree of slope and pressing up against the mountains as if you were strafing, you can climb out of bounds and basically skip the entirety of the game.
Propeller Trick: Glide on top of a propeller while being pinned under a platform, this will shoot you high up in the air and allow you to get across the level quicker in certain areas.
Movement: Think of Bubsy like he's a race car. When he picks up speed, it takes time to turn. And when he is slow, this car ain't movin very fast.
Jumping: Delayed. Holding 'Triangle' allows you to glide, slows you down but is helpful to get you farther to those ledges.
Shooting: Only when you hold down the aim/fire button while near/hitting an atom. Somehow doesn't work when you land on top of the atom.
Dodge/Block: Never used.

Special Thanks

  • Thanks Spikestuff for showing me the game.
  • Thanks UltraJMan for running the game and showing off the game at Awful Games Done Quick 2012!
Video Below has had loading times removed!

Samsara: What could possibly go wrong?
Samsara: Whoa, are you still playing this thing? Hey, whatever blows your hair back.
While the game itself may be cat-astrophically bad, the run was as well. Haha, just kitten. The run was great, I didn't even feel the need to paws it and do something else, which is how most people react to Bubsy. I didn't even tabby over to another window, my eyes were as claws to the screen as possible the entire time. My ears, on the other hand, suf-furred greatly. An unfurtunate loss, to be sure, but I'll be fine. At least meow I can claim disability. I'll let this run glide on over to Moons, as the audience seemed to yowl with delight over it.
...Hey, I didn't write this stuff! My contract does not mention pain! That's it, I'm outta here! You can't make me!
Spikestuff: (mimics) What could possibly go wrong?
The game dumps as an interlace encode. Shit.

100% when? :3 This is stupid, yes vote, stupidly entertaining... and assuming when I think I know when this is going to be accepted I'll be using this as my return to publishing... since I'm claiming this. I couldn't think of any cat related puns, my post was a catastrophe.

Nice work again solarplex... but it could do with having an encode that removes the loading screens, they probably take up half the runtime.

Actually working on that one right now! It's now available to be watched at the bottom of my submission! Six Minutes of life saved by not waiting for the loading screens!

I'm happy this is being done, there is a Litter of games still yet to be TASed out there and every one we can add even if only to the vault is a success. I would also be interested in how a Purrfect run would look with getting 100%, but not majorly so if it would add too much time, and on the note of time it is good to see all those loading screens getting Scratched off the video.
Enjoys speedruns but hasn't actually tried making any yet.

One thing I like about this TAS is that it manages to completely hide the fact that the control system of the game is absolutely horrendous. It almost makes it look like an actually playable game, of the likes of Super Mario 64.

Agreed. It looks like a manic Saturday morning cartoon... that I want to play, but I probably shouldn't.

It's highly advised to NOT play this game unless you are a robot :P Doing testing in all areas was making me insane, well more insane than I already am.

I am absolutely amazed that a 3D engine that uses such simple textures and an even simpler terrain generator has such a low draw distance. I sincerely love the character animations, though. It appears Rob Paulsen didn't voice the character this time around; that would've made things a little better. As a small bonus, very nice.
A hundred years from now, they will gaze upon my work and marvel at my skills but never know my name. And that will be good enough for me.

This game is terrible and by that I mean Superman 64-levels of terrible. But unlike Superman, Bubsy 3D actually has some entertainment value as a TAS. When watching it, you constantly remind yourself that when you were to try the game, you would probably have problems even moving in a straight line and knowing where you are. But the TAS makes everything look fluid and easy. It also helps that it isn't too long. I voted yes.
Current project: Gex 3 any% Paused: Gex 64 any% There are no N64 emulators. Just SM64 emulators with hacky support for all the other games.

Really liked watching you abuse the wall collision and height tricks to skip a bunch of each level. Yes vote!

Wow, this game has some high quality level design shizzle right here. Yes vote. Also, Solarplex, speaking of awful PS1 games... how about you give this little gem a go? Rubs hands together gleefully

The gameplay seems so disjointed and random that it doesn't really feel like you're speeding through this game. It was interesting, but hardly enjoyable.
